Birds through my lens

Two Pretties!

, ,

Our recent cold snap has brought a few new visitors to the bird feeder.
Here are a couple of White-Crowned Sparrows.
This first one is a adult.

This one is a juvenile. Still hasn't earned his white crown! Probably an offspring of the first one.

Keeping an Eye Out

, ,

At Mill Lake the other day, this lovely Bald Eagle was keeping an eye out. It was paying particular attention to the flock of Canada Geese that flew by.
I find it's always a treat to see these top raptors.

Manky Mallard

, , ,

Here's a shot of a hybrid Mallard.

Mallards and a Cat

This is a popular spot for ducks. Mostly Mallards. There is a little wide spot on the trail around the pond, with a park bench where people throw seed for them. This day there was a cat there too. I understand it to be a regular visitor.
A large bunch of ducks was on the ground picking seed and the cat would try to sneak up on them. As soon as it got too close the ducks would explode into the air and land back down in the water. The cat streaked away. The ducks would get back out of the water one by one, and the whole process would start again!
The Mallards:

The Cat:

I'm sure it probably lived near by. I hope so anyway, because it wasn't going to make a living off ducks!

The Quintessential Drake Mallard

, , ,

After rain for 26 days out of 30 in November, the clouds finally broke on the 1st and the sun shone.
Yesterday I managed a short trip to the local duck pond.
Here's a beautiful Drake Mallard. The water was acting just right too!

Off the Ground

, , ,

Seems I hardly see the Juncos off the ground. They like to feed on the seed under the feeder.
Here this one pose in the nearby bushes.

Drying Out

, ,

After all the rain we have had, today, we finally got a splash of sunshine. It was sort of hit and miss until early afternoon, but I'm sure it was sun.
Even the local Merlin was enjoying the warmth. Spreading out it's feathers to dry out.

Happy Turkey Day to all those below the 49th!

Another Finch

,

Here's another House Finch. He's all puffed up to stay warm. As you can see, the rain continues. It must be tough on these little guys when it's so wet and miserable. I'd like to invite them all into the house and get them warmed up!

One Red One, One Orange One

, ,

Here's a couple of House Finches at the feeder. Interesting how their colours differ.

Two Chicks!

, ,

Seems we have a new family of Chickadees in our yard. Last winter we only had two. So far, this year we have about six. (They are hard to count!) I think what happened is that we still have the youngsters that were born this summer and they are sticking with Mum & Dad.
Here's a couple of them:

Scrambling

, ,

Here's two cases of Scrambling. This Junco along with a couple of it's buddies are scrambling in the grass looking for seed on the ground. Occasionally one will go up to the feeder and kick some seed out.
Our weather has been wet and windy for the past couple of weeks. Our typical November weather. Thus the second case. The weather has definitely left me scrambling to get a shot here and there!

You Put Your ...

..right foot out and you...

No Wonder..

, ,

.. there's no birds in the backyard! The Merlin is back.
Haven't seen it since Spring.

Pretty Girl

,

Recently my local flock has been reduced substantially. With all the rain and wind we have had recently I think the majority of the group must have headed south.
Out typical November has been very wet and quite windy for the past two weeks. We are definitely living up to our reputation as the "Wet Coast!"
There's still a few Finches and Junkos around. Here's a pretty little House Finch.
