Life through my lens

Hunting

, ,

While out and about the other day, we spotted this Red-tailed Hawk. It was hunting in a field and had just risen from the ground, to land on this fence post.

I was quite a distance away and these are the best of my shots.

Even being a couple of hundred yards away, as soon as I raised the camera, I had about 2 seconds before it was off! This seems to be happening a lot these day. Everyone seems to be extra cautious.
It had something in it's talons, but I couldn't tell what. Probably a mouse or some other small rodent.

With all the complications over identifying buteos, it's nice to see a red-tailed hawk that does really have a red (oh, okay, orange) tail whistle

Magnificent bird. You can really see the family resemblence between them and the European buzzard.

I was quite surprised how red it's tail was. But there was no denying that. Seems like whenever people aren't sure about and ID they call it a Red-tailed!
This time it was.
