Chickadee, Home, Black-Capped
Seems we have a new family of Chickadees in our yard. Last winter we only had two. So far, this year we have about six. (They are hard to count!) I think what happened is that we still have the youngsters that were born this summer and they are sticking with Mum & Dad.
Here's a couple of them:

Chickadee, Black-Capped
Here's a couple of shots of my favorites. I love these little guys. They are so brave. They flit in, grab what they are after and flit away just as fast. They never seem to be in the same place for more than a moment. On the other hand they will fly up close to you and sometimes even land on a hand. They are quite curious and always come over to see what you are doing. They also, on average, only weigh 11 grams and can live up to 12 years. Amazing!
This first little guy has a bit of a malformed left foot, but that didn't slow it down at all.

Home, Chickadee, Black-Capped
I was standing at our back door, yesterday afternoon, when this little guy flew over to say Hello. It was about 10 feet away and looking right at me. With a 400 mm lens, that's pretty close! It sat on the dowel my wife is using to hold up a Jasmine plant and then flitted over to the plant itself.
Here are the results. My new favorites!

Black-Capped, Home, Chickadee
I was out in the backyard yesterday, sitting on the ground with my camera and tripod. I was taking a few shots of some flowers. About ten feet away, this little guy landed in the Butterfly bush to see what I was doing. It sat patiently while I readjusted the camera in it's direction. I was using my long lens and thought we might be to close. But this was the result. Such cute little guys!

Chickadee, Hen, Juveniles, Home
...
Mother Black-Capped Chickadee looks rather harried as she flits around, trying to keep two hungry mouths fed. Must be quite a chore when the babies are as big as she is! Good thing there's a good supply of seed nearby.

Chickadee, Black-Capped, Reifel
Chickadees can be a challange. They are so quick. They dart in, get what they want and dart away.
But they are so pretty.
