Life through my lens

Sharp-shinned Hawk

, ,

Here's a Sharp-shinned Hawk. It's our resident predator. It stops by our backyard occasionally, to terrorize all our little birds. But they have to make a living too!

It's a bit of a gloomy day around here. The quiet before the storm I think. It's forecast that we should get snow later today and it's anticipated we could get up to 30cm before it turns to rain later tomorrow.

Adele, I'm holding my breath that they get this as wrong as they seem to get all the other forecasts wrong. But it seems that they always get the bad ones right!
So far still no snow!
I always think (especially these days, when my eyes aren't what they were) that it would be neat to have the eyesight of a hawk!

Since I found other, safer accomodation for my chickens I can finally see the beauty in these birds. Lovely hawk, he looks so very alert.

Is that a little bit of rust colour on his right wing or a dried leaf?

So far our hawks have not bothered the birds, at least to my knowledge. We have a lot of moles though and I see the hawks standing on the grass occassionally listening for them.

Lois, I think it's a bit of it's breast feathers, puffed out. I really like hawk, etc. They just portray that image that says, "Yeah, I'm at the top of the food chain!"
