A stressful situation
Saturday, December 16, 2006 2:47:57 AM
Two days ago I had a very stressful night.
In the evening some workers opened the asphalt on the street because they tried to repair a leak in the water pipe in front of our neighbours house. So the administration of our town stopped the water supply for 3-4 hours.
Therefore in the evening we (I and my family) left our house. Because what to do without water? (You can't cook etc.)
We came back very late in the night. My parents and sister were very tired so they slept 30 minutes later.
I started my computer to check my emails and different sites. In the night between 23:00 pm and 00:00 am I started a Linux update on my private desktop computer. (My private room is in the second floor.)
The update took about 1 hour and 30 minutes. Ten minutes before the update was installed I considered to update my fathers computer, too. (I'm the administrator of all family computers here.)
Well my fathers private "home office" and computer is in the basement. But I was not sure to do it, because I also was a little bit tired and I really had no mind. (Because the update would also need 1,5 hours there. Then it would be about 02:30 am.) Hmmmmmm... But then I thought: "let's do it. Then it's finished."
As mentioned 10 minutes before my update was installed I thought when I start my fathers computer during my own update I can save a little bit time.
So I went downstairs to the basement. There I suddenly had wet shoes. The first room was completely flooded.
I thought what's going on here?
The next room and some others were also completely flooded. I stood ankle-deep (and more) in the water there.
I called my parents and my father immediately stopped the house water main tap. I immediately checked the last room with my fathers office. Because that would be very very expensive and terrible when this room is also flooded.
There's was still everything ok. But we were very lucky because the water level was only less then 0,5cm lower. (5 minutes later and this room would be also flooded!)
In the other rooms the floor is water resistent. But very much stuff and things there are damaged and destroyed now. But the office is the most important room there. There's a carpeted floor and much expensive electronic devices like a computer, printer, scanner etc.
The half night we used buckets to remove all the water. Well the water was very cold and I still wore my house shoes. So I decided to walk bare-footed. I rushed back to the first floor to put away my shoes. Then I rushed back as fast as possible.
Well and what happened? Bare-footed and very wet slippery marmor steps? Yep, I slipped on the stairs and fall down. But in the very very last moment before I crashed very very hard onto the marmor steps I catched the banister to cushion the fall a little bit. So I only fall a little bit on my shoulder but very hard on my legs. (But nevertheless better than body and head.)
Well without my reflex and the banister I would be in the hospital now.
After some minutes I didn't felt a pain and I tought everything is ok. So I helped again to remove the water. Deep in the night all the water has gone.
At the next day I went to the doctor because when I woke up I felt a pain on my foot. "No fracture, but sprained or maybe a capsular tear" the doctor said.
Well that's ok and not so bad. I wear a bandage and hobble a little bit now.
But what was the reason? Water pipe burst? Well I guess there was too much pressure on the pipes after the administration turned-on the water supply.
Well some things were very strange at this situation. What happened when I decided to start my fathers computer not until my own update was installed? --> The office room would be flooded. Or what happened when I decided not no update my fathers computer in the night? --> Everything in the basement would be destroyed now. A very strange and terrible thought!
And there is also very much irony. When our house was constructed the planner made a mistake with all basement doors and foundations. But this mistake also rescued the office. --> Because the door was a little bit higher there.
Well well... a very stressful night. And so much is damaged or destroyed now.
I wish I noticed the pipe leak a little bit earlier...

vielen Dank! Mir bzw. meinem Fuss geht es wieder besser.
Ohne Wasser kann man wirklich nicht viel machen. Leider ist durch den "Rohrbruch" sehr viel kaputt gegangen. ;_;
