A short remark

, ,

I'm sorry for my late blog posting.
I can't use my "productive computer" for internet related things at the moment. (I'm still waiting for my DSL connection here.)
Additionally my notebook crashed recently... sad (Still don't have an alternative one at the moment.)
So it's a little bit difficult last days. (I just use my sisters notebook with ISDN connection.)

But next days I will publish my next "real" posting.

Now I wanna use this posting for some short remarks.
At first I wanna thanks all visitors here. Recently I realised I had 20000 visitors since I started my Blog.
And now even more than 23000 visitors. bigeyes
Thaaaanks a lot! smile I'm very happy!

It also seems there are much modifications and new features at Opera community. That's great! So thanks to all Opera cummunity administrators, too! up
Well at the same time I fixed most new CSS bugs caused by the new Opera community layout/features. My design was broken suddenly. But it's no problem. Now it should work again. smile
I only made it "quick'n'dirty", so there are some CSS parts which I don't need anymore, but it works and is valid. I will clean my CSS file later (and fix last bugs) when I can use my productive computer again.

My last remark today.
The home button (on the left) now links to the english version of my private website. (Instead of German one). There I use the same design now, too. (For a more consistent layout.)
I planned these version like a blog related supplement. There you will also find more and new informations in future. smile

Best wishes,
Heiko

/* - Update: 31. March 2007 - */

Yesterday I noticed my design was also broken with Internet Explorer (IE). Well I use Linux so I noticed it too late. I'm sorry...
But I fixed the new bugs now. And I also have good news for IE users. I almost have full IE6 support now. Not full support like in my english website but much better than before. (Still experimental status).
I used some special CSS hacks to hide some CSS parts from other Browsers. I rolled out all CSS hacks in a second external CSS file. So the clean and valid CSS file is for all other Browsers and the other file (with some "dirty CSS parts") for IE6 only.

The menu is on the correct position and the menu buttons are transparent now. The background image is fixed and the text disappear correctly on the edge of the paper when you scroll up or down. smile
Only two things doesn't work. In contrast to the background the menu is not fixed and will disappear when you scroll down. Maybe I find a solution for that, but I can't promise. wink
Well it's difficult because IE6 supports "position:fixed;" only in the "body" tag... The fixed background is a trick only.
An other annoying problem is, IE6 render in "Quirks mode" here. This happen because of the XML declaration (<?xml version="1.0" encoding="utf-8"?>) in the XHTML code here... Well the declaration is ok because then it's really a 100% valid XHTML file, but then IE6 switch from "Standards Mode" into "Quirks Mode"... Blame Microsoft!
My home button also don't work, so I disabled it for all IE users.

There was also a little bug in my english website version. The background repeated again and again in IE. Now it should work, too.

/* - Update: 1. May 2007 - */

Next update. smile The menu is also fixed now and will not dissapear when you scroll down.
And my "home button" works in "About" page now. But not in "Blog" page.
I modified almost the whole "ie.css" file now. Unfortunately I need some "dirty" (means not valid) parts again.
There is only one problem: It works with Scripts only. When Scripts (Javascript etc.) are disabled in your IE, it doesn't work. Nothing is fixed then...
Well so far only two things doesn't work with IE6 now. My "home button" in "Blog" page and the "paper edge" on the bottom.
Well IE6 is really annoying! irked

I've been tagged...Knut, the little polar bear

Hello Galadriel,
thanks a lot! smile I like to check such statistics, too. Since we have new Opera community features here it's easier for me to check. Because before the Opera statistics were in the "sidebar". Well... and I disabled the sidebar via CSS. bigsmile
So it was a little bit "circuitous" to check. (Additionally two shortcuts with the keyboard). bigsmile

I'm sorry for my late reply.

Dear Heiko, I like your layout and have altered your user.css to make mine. I hope you do not mind since I haven't told you before I did it sad

Thanks a lot for the great source code up

thank you very much. It's no problem, you can use the CSS code if you want. smile So don't worry. Hope everything works. smile

Hi Heiko,

I'm so happy that you've replied to my comment smile

We are discussing how my theme appears on any browsers, especially IE6. I've read your updated info about how to edit your CSS so that it could work with IE6. However, I don't know how to apply to mine sad Could you help me with this?

Thanks a lot.

Btw, I'm from Vietnam, and you've surprised me as you typed my name correctly, or maybe you've just copied and pasted lol

Heiko WagnerRyuu Tuesday, April 3, 2007 6:53:55 PM

Hello Thủy Hiền,
thank you very much for your translation! I'm glad you wrote a comment again. smile About IE6: I replied on your Blog. smile

Dear Heiko smile you are awesome up Thanks a lot for your edited code love bigsmile I have tested on IE6, and it works almost perfectly up It would be wonderful if your "home" code works with IE6 too bigsmile

I would like to ask you one more question if you don't mind bigsmile Since I moved the sidewrap to the left, I recognized that whenever I've used the code tags (code) in the entry, and if the code is longer than the width of the mainwrap, it doesn't go to a new line but disappears beyond the right margin cry So does the text :frown: It happens only when I view with Internet Explorer, both 6 and 7 (on Fire Fox, there is the scroll bar for the code "window"). Do you have any ideas why it happens?

I'm not sure if I make myself clear enough, so please take a look of this entry and I will appreciate your advice smile

Btw, Opera Community has just created a forum for Vietnamese bloggers at http://my.opera.com/vietnamese bigsmile Please join us to discuss about Vietnam love

Heiko WagnerRyuu Wednesday, April 4, 2007 2:23:36 PM

Hello Thủy Hiền,
I'm glad my "IE6 bugfix" works on your blog. smile
Thank you very much for the link to the vietnamese forum. When I have more time I will join. smile But I don't speak the vietnamese language.

About your new IE6 problem. Yeah, I have an idea. wink But not for the home button... sad
It seems IE6 have some problems with "overflow:auto;" or "overflow:scroll;". But I found a way. I'll tell the correct code on your Blog again. smile I will also update my own CSS file.

Best wishes,
Heiko

Thủy Hiềndanquynh Wednesday, April 4, 2007 4:39:44 PM

Wow, you are a genius, Heiko yes you really are love Thanks a lot for your attention and effort love I promise that I would surely... disturb you if I would find some other bugs lol

Btw, I saw the "home" menu on IE6 (on my layout), not at the right position, but inside the entry confused How come that your home menu appears differently since I just copied and edited your code confused

Regards,

Thủy Hiền

Hello Thủy Hiền,
Thank you for your kind words! smile Did you read my edited posting in your blog? Because I modified the code a little bit again. --> width:550px; was too much.
The rest I'll tell in your Blog again smile

Dear Heiko, thanks a lot for your help love Everything is perfect now and some bloggers have commented that they like this skin and want me to share it bigsmile It must have taken me a lot of time if I had done it by myself. Actually, I'm not an IT technician or the like. I've never learnt anything relating to IT, either bigsmile But I like to build a website or decorate a ready-made one bigsmile So... I don't really understand thoroughly the appearance of the home button on IE6 p However, I must acknowledge that your explanation is very clear up Once again, thank you very much for your patience and kindness love

Cheers,

Hello Thủy Hiền,
I'm very glad everything works perfect now. And thanks again for your kind words! smile I'm happy when I can help other people.

Well IE6 is often really annoying. I hope the trend in Browser usage goes more to other Browsers. I hope IE6 will disappear as fast as possible. bigsmile

Best wishes,
Heiko

Hi Heiko,

It's my great pleasure to be in your friend list, so please do love

I'm glad that I've found someone who shares the same interest. However, I must confess that I don't know anything about CSS p I've learnt HTML and it's more simple bigsmile Sites created with HTML look ok in all browsers, including IE6 - the most popular in our country bigsmile So I hope that you will soon find the solution for Opera's CSS smile

Btw, my sister is living in Aachen, Germany now. Where are you living?

Cheers,

Thủy Hiền

Heiko WagnerRyuu Sunday, April 8, 2007 3:14:40 PM

Hi Thủy Hiền,
thank you very much. I added you on my friends list now. smile Nevertheless it seems you know a little bit about CSS. Because you modified parts of my CSS and you also noticed how I added a home button. Did you analysed the xhtml code and compared it with my CSS to find it out? bigsmile Because so far I don't explain it on my blog how to add a new button. smile

Well when I create websites I always try to make cross Browser compatibility. Also IE6 and if possible as much in IE5.x. But I will stop advanced tests for IE5 in future now. So I will make the same like Netscape 4 in the past. --> Plaintext layout only if it don't work.
That is also the reason why my German website is not so "experimental". There I mostly use CSS which all currect Browsers can render. But anyhow IE5 and IE6 had some troubles. But I fixed it.
Well unfortunately IE6 is (still) the most used Browser in every country... sad But in Europe, and especially in Germany the Browser usage of Firefox and Opera is higher and increases slowly step by step. up

I live near Ulm in south Germany. It's located between Munich (Muenchen) and Stuttgart. smile

Best wishes,
Heiko

Thủy Hiềndanquynh Sunday, April 8, 2007 6:59:35 PM

Hi Heiko,

We are connected now bigsmile

About the new button, I've just compared the differences between your CSS and others and happened to find the "tricks" bigsmile Then I viewed source of your HTML pages and found the HTML code for it bigsmile However, if I knew a little CSS then I could also put the home button on the new skin. So far, I've hidden it behind the left sidebar and don't know how to position it vertically so that it could appear on the menu. I'm afraid that I may need your help again, since I've already posted a tip to instruct Vietnamese bloggers how to do it p Someone has faced the same problem, and I don't have the solution. Normally, my friend always helps me with such problems as well as the cross-browser compatibility. But he's been so busy these days. And I'm so lucky that you've helped me so far yes I do appreciate it love

And thanks for your comment on the skin. If you've noticed the left sidebar, you may have found a collection of Opera themes to share. I've edited all of them on the frame CSS of the top Vietnamese blogger who used to be Opera's member of the week yes just the way I did with your CSS lol just like doing a jigsaw puzzle lol If you have time, please take a look and I also appreciate your comments - a professional comment bigsmile

Btw, I passed by Munich while I was doing my LLM in Groningen, the Netherlands. I was just inside a train station, so actually I don't know how it looks p But I visited other parts of Germany such as Aachen (of course p ), Cologne (is it the correct spelling sad ), Heidenburg. I also visited German corner where 2 rivers meet bigsmile I love traveling bigsmile

Cheers,

Thủy Hiền

Heiko WagnerRyuu Wednesday, April 11, 2007 7:42:37 PM

Hi Thủy Hiền,
sorry for my late reply.
Ahh ok, now I know how you found it in my code. smile
About the home button. Well I created the button for a fixed layout which is positioned on the left side of the screen.
With a centered or fluid design it's more difficult to add a new button.
At the moment I'm too busy to check it out, but when I have time I will try it. I will tell you the CSS code then. smile But so far I don't know if it works or not. Because I didn't test it in the past.

By the way. Do you share your modified designs for all? (Please read my last comment there). smile

I will have a look into your blog design postings. smile

I'm glad you love traveling. I like it, too. smile But I can't go often. I hope somewhere in future I can visit some Asian countries. smile
Oh, it's pity you only saw the train station in Munich. Well I took some photos of Munich last year. Hope you like it. smile

Best wishes,
Heiko

Thủy Hiềndanquynh Saturday, April 14, 2007 1:24:44 AM

Hi Heiko,

Thanks for your reply smile

I think you've misunderstood. I just copied your home code and pasted it into the new theme's CSS, but the home button appears inside the entry, not on the left side of the screen like the way it does in my pencil theme. I, then, had to position it to the left (using negative position-left). I have failed to find the vertically positioning code on W3Schools.com.

I will appreciate your helping me with this when you have more free time. I am not in a hurry anyway. Just want to learn something smile Thanks a lot for your kindness.

Regarding the themes that I've edited so far. Yes, I do share them to people, and a lot of Vietnamese bloggers have been using them with (or without) my acknowledgement p I also have read your reply to a Chinese blogger (I guess) that you recommended him/her to visit my page to download the shared themes. Thanks a lot for referring him/her to my page.

Your photos of Munich are very cool smile I like the cathedral. I saw one in Cologne (Koln, right?). The European architecture is perfect. I just love it! Thanks for sharing. If you don't mind, I would like to download them for later use. Thanks for that too.

Cheers,

Thủy Hiền

Heiko WagnerRyuu Monday, April 16, 2007 5:36:01 PM

Hi Thủy Hiền smile

Ah ok - I think I got what you mean. When I have more time I will check your CSS code. smile

I'm glad you share designs to all. I also wanna share some of my designs in future. But I can't finish/modify mine at the moment. And there are still some bugs I wanna fix at first. My design are more experimental.

I'm very glad you like my photos of Munich. Yeah, the German name of Cologne is "Köln". If you don't see the special German font you can also write "Koeln".
Ohh I forgot to ask in my last comment. Did you mean "Heidelberg" with "Heidenburg" in your last reply? Well I guess so. A very famous in Germany. smile

Best wishes,
Heiko

Thủy Hiềndanquynh Monday, April 23, 2007 11:48:47 PM

Hi Heiko,

Please take your time since I'm not in a hurry. I just want to learn some CSS. I intend to convert the CSS codes of some websets offered at OSWD.org so that they could fit Opera's layout wink I have succeeded with 2 of them so far (of course, with the assistance of my Vietnamese fellows smile ). They look more simple than those I'm sharing now smile and to some extent, they look more professional p Thank you very much for your CSS sharing. I've learnt a lot from our discussions.

And also thanks for the information about the language. I don't have that key on my computer, and don't have the font to convert, either. So I will remember how to write it from now on smile I don't like other people to write my language incorrectly, so I hope you don't mind since I made 2 mistakes sad Yes, Heidelberg with the castle bombed during World War II.

Regards,

Thủy Hiền

Heiko WagnerRyuu Tuesday, April 24, 2007 8:39:04 PM

Hi Thủy Hiền,
I saw you new design! And also the other one before. They look great!Very impressive! up
I hope I can modify/finish my designs soon, too. wait
Well I'm glad you learnt a lot! smile

Don't worry about your mistakes! That is really no problem here in Germany. smile
We have some special fonts here. These are: ä, ö, ü and ß.
But we also have a way to circumscribe (paraphrase?) the special fonts.
ä = ae
ö = oe
ü = ue
ß = ss
I guess so it's easier for foreign people. smile And also easier to type on foreign computer keyboards. bigsmile
Hope it's useful. smile

Best wishes,
Heiko
