It has been entirely 23 days after I went through the second interview of this whole process.
And finally today I grab the time and am quite in a calm mood to collect and remember the day on April 12th.
It was a day that had been expected by me with an eager yet bumping heart.
The exam to postgraduate has stretched such a long period that I was nearly at the point of eruption and becoming “Let It Be”.
Yet it turnes out that I HAVE MADE IT with a willing heart and support from my mother and friends including, Frank Guo, R.Z. Uto, Jackie Worm, Sandy W., Liao Dongmei, Yu Lu, and Rong Rong.
Hence I shall write a memo concerning the experience and the lesson learned to share with my readers.
READ THE BOOK SEVERAL TIMES TO GET A CLUE FOR YOUR OWN
I had read the book on education twice and found a clue for myself to organize the teaching methods and relative theories ----quite a good way of reading book that I have and will benefit from in the process of studying.
With three weeks devoted to these books, I begin to wonder:
If I have been in such a disadvantage to TCSL majors, I should make an outline that is extraordinary and clarifies my interests and understanding of this particular field.
The core element I focused on is CULTURE----
# Relationship b/t culture and language---the relation b/t culture element in TCSL and teach culture itself
# Principles of teaching culture in second language acquisition
# Importance of cross culture communication to be adapted to the multi-culture world
# Teaching methods for progressive levels
# My own experiences of the role that culture has played including the adoption of Chinese children by overseas families, utilizing culture as a bridge in communication, the learning of Chinese characters and strokes by overseas friends…
GETHER INFORMATION FROM AS MANY WAYS AS U CAN FOR I NEVER KNOW WHAT OTHERS SHALL SHARE WITH ME
I invited a girl from Xi’an who is currently studying in this Depart to dinner and she was quite helpful. She told me the procedures of the exam she took yet advised me to be alert that the testing model varies from year to year. What was quite nice of her was that she sent me some preparing materials which had boarded my eye in how to organize a class and write teaching syllabus.
MAKE A SELF-ANALASIS AS TO GIVE THE FULLEST PLAY TO MY ADVANTAGES
The several days before the exam, I was quite involved in writing a self-intro in English. It was said that the oral test would make a somewhat part in the final score.
What was on my mind actually was that: I should not lose a single point in what I know and what I am good at.
So I spent much time in writing and revising such an intro, as if I were making preparations for a speech, with emphasis on why I choose to study this major. But for this full preparation. I would have not behaved so confidently and fluently.
I shall present the whole passage as the follows, though I became realized that the interview in Chinese is more important, which I shall elaborate on later.
BEARING A CLEAR PURPOSE / STRONG MOTIVATION/ OPTIMISTIC ATTITUDE FOR WHAT I WANT TO DO
It was really full of tense and nervous atmosphere while we were waiting outside the office where 7 judges were seated to exam the potential and capacity of postgraduates-to-be for 2007.
Before I entered, I told myself repeatedly that I am here to give a conclusion for what I have done for the past six months, I am here to terminal this process, and I am here to present myself confidently to the professors.
I am special in that I am not a graduate this year but with 1 year working experience;
I am not educated in TCSL but with 14 years of first hand experience on learning English as a second language (TESL);
I am not only interested in teaching Chinese language and culture but is determined to promote culture to such a level that it creates harmony among nations and people.
I asked for a seat and smiled to the judges before I began to introduce myself in Chinese.
The teachers would not ask me details on TCSL, as I have supposed.
However, instead, I was aware that it’s important to keep the conversation on, to keep their interests in me and keep on asking me questions, by which I was able to grab the chance to sustain my performance for 16 minutes and tell then what I should have---efforts, determination, willingness.
We discussed about culture itself and I guessed that my Self-project had really won their heart.
The result came just in the same day.
Yet the waiting 2 hours seemed ages long when candidates including me finally became quite, waiting for the result.
I could not help recall the past days,
finding the headmaster of the depart just by accident yet not let it slip away; attending teachers’ classes and lectures giving myself more chances to broad horizon; leading such a regular life that seemed almost boring and repetitive……
Anyhow finally came the teacher and announce the list.
I was the second the 11 students admitted with the research area on Teaching Methodology.
There were 20 more students left and redirected to other areas such as translation and linguistics.
In all there are 59 students for the new round of 2007 postgraduates whose start the semester in Sep. 11 of them are those who from ECNU without any tests.
WHAT TO BE EXPECTED? HAPPY WHILE WITH PRESSURE
I am lucky enough to be admitted by the exact major I have been struggling for.
It was great!
In addition, 70% students, including me, are entitled to a scholarship of 12,000RMB
for the first year which shall cover the 10,000 tuition fee and an extra 2,000 for accommodation.
It is a new trial policy implement to only a few colleges in SH, including ECNU.
Like an extra surprise, my efforts are worthwhile.
Yet suddenly I realized and felt the heavy pressure from this process:
As a non-major student, I am trusted by the judged as they believe I shall study hard to realize my dream, and they shall see with their eyes wide open to witness how I shall practice my plans to realize my dream.
BE PREPARED!
The satisfying conclusion of the first phase of my project means the start of the second phase of it,
Or to be exact, a transitional period from May to August to be prepared for the unknown new life ahead.
On thinking that the following three years would be spent in this dynamic city and the unpredictable days here,
And on thinking that my blog shall make a record of the on-going process of me,
I became pleased exciting.
My way certainly doed not stop here, and I shall not spare any time in wondering around.
The new phase of battle has started and I am on my way to plan it well.
The self-intro;
^^^^^Good morning, distinguished teachers and profs.
I am CWY, an English major student.
I graduated from Xi’an Jiaotong University last June and then worked as manager assistant in a foreign trade company in Shang hai until last Sep., when the decision was made to quit the job and devote time and efforts to my so-called Self Project.
And now here I am, to push ahead this project and challenge myself.
^^^^^^ My four-year college life bears witness to my diligent studies and active involvement in various social activities, including speech contests at provincial levels, English teaching assistant for English Summer Programe, chairs and delegates for Model United Nations Conference, and volunteer for the ICOMOS conferences held in Xi’an in 2005.
Gradually, my English competence and social skills have been greatly improved.
^^^^^ On the other hand, my working experience, though not very long, has provided me a peek into this sophisticated society as well as this metropolitan city.
More importantly, it has led me to ponder:
Where does my interest truly lie?
&
What kind of life style and pursuits do I affectionately seek?
Consequently, the answer came quite affirmative, that I am eager to fully utilize the tool of English language, not limited to bridge the two parties in commercial activities, but to be A Culture-Carrier, to extend my interests in China’s brilliant civilization and fine traditions, to a level that interests become the career.
^^^^^ This is quite a challenging project, yet I am aware that the first and basic step I shall take is to pursue a systematic and high-quality further study in related fields, such as Chinese linguistics and culture, international communication and language teaching.
^^^^^ In my opinion, swimming and running are my favorites, as I can enjoy the time by myself and think about issues on life and studies.
^^^^^I firmly believe that with determination and a positive attitude, and the abundant academic resources here in ECNU, I shall accomplish my self-project and realize my dream.
This is a brief introduction about me and thanks for ur attention.
