La noche de los girasoles

, , , , ,

I don't watch many Spanish films, though this is the second one I've watched this year, maybe the second one I've watched in this life. The first one was El Laberinto del fauno (http://imdb.com/title/tt0457430/). I'm starting to like Spanish films even though I'm a gringo.

The Night of the Sunflowers, as its called in English, starts off with a shot of a mysterious car leaving a field of sunflowers. Now, forget all about the sunflowers, because that's the only time you will see sunflowers in this feature. The car belongs to a vacuum cleaner selling rapist, and apparently he did some raping in that field of sunflowers.

The rest of the film goes on in the laid back Spanish country side. The rapist is only one of several people, each hiding dark secrets, some darker than others. Adultery, corruption, and even murder is successfully hidden behind perfect facades, but the rape in the field of sunflowers has initiated a cascade of events which takes them all closer to, if not over, the line where they can't hide their lies any more.

Jorge Sánchez-Cabezudo, both writer and director, does a good job telling the story. There is no Matrix stop motion or explotions here (although there is a car that crashes into a tree), but it suits the simple life in the Spanish country side.

All in all, a thriller definately worth watching, never giving away its next move. Though I doubt The Hoff would like it:
Body count: 2
Shots fired: 4
BUT luckily for The Hoff it had full frontal nudity once, and at least one ass.

Hoff says: "Full frontal nudity, but no assets wink"

Nice review Magne! Links, pictures, body count and shots fired! Pity you weren't at Shoot 'Em Up, now that had a body count! But all in all this was a refeshingly different movie smile

I wonder how long it'll take until Hollywood producers make films that are designed to exactly match the likings of TheHoff.

Wow, I am also impressed by the quality of this review:) I liked the movie. I was still thinking about it this morning. I feels so sorry for crazy Amos I could cry. Can't wait to read the next review. Thx for a nice evening, everybody!

Nice review indeed. I guess Magne took notes duing the movie. How many cigarettes did the police officer smoke?

As many as the body count in Shoot'em'up I think.

Sounds great, pity I missed it. Oh well, it'll hit tpb at some point, I guess, but that's just not the same smile
