ESSEN (2008)
320 KBPSSaxophonist Paul Shapiro has really out-done himself on his third album as a bandleader. Entitled Essen, the music is served up with elements of Yiddish swing, soulful blues, gospel chant and theatre-cabaret wind up in gypsy-punk cables, hip-hop landings and “Borscht Belt humor,” which Shapiro refers to as the comedians who entertain at the hotels in Upstate New York‘s Catskill Mountains. If that means nothing to you, then think of Jackie Mason’s humor and you’ll grasp the idea. The term “essen” is Yiddish for “eat” and Shapiro has delivered a viable smorgasbord for people to eat up with songs made famous by Peggy Lee, Cab Calloway, Sophie Tucker, Mildred Bailey, Slim Gaillard and the Barton Brothers. The jocularity and swing-jazz vibe in the tracks have a big stage personality and presage a trend for Yiddish/klezmer accents to modernize songs that have laid dormant for years. Paul Shapiro was just the guy to do it.
The album goes back to 40s jazz with numbers like “Mama Goes Where Papa Goes,” which is beautifully tailored to Cillia Owens’ husky vocal timbres with a likeness to the lush moans of Sarah Vaughan, and “Oy Veys Mir,” delivered fabulously by singer Babi Floyd. The rhythm section in these tunes make you want to join in the revelry on stage. Comprising of pianist Brian Mitchell, bassist Booker King and drummer Tony Lewis, the jumps in the rhythmic grooves move from a sultry, swing-blues slugging to flamboyant rollicking shakes. The horn section of Shapiro on saxophone, Steven Bernstein and Frank London on trumpet and Doug Wieselman on clarinet have vibrant klezmer-flange and soulful-blues shadings. The upbeat klezmer jive of “Dunkin Bagel” induces laughter while the Yiddish-soul laden licks of “Utt-Da-Zay” feel like a funeral service with a theatre-cabaret style. The dazzling breadth of the piano keys on “Utt-Da-Zay” are brilliantly scrolled and turn to a snazzy bebop throttle along “A Bissel Bop.”
Maybe the most impressive track on the album is the first cone “Essen,” which is a massive collage of Yiddish swing, theatre-cabaret, gypsy-punk and hip-hop thrusts. What “Bohemian Rhapsody” is to Queen, “Essen” is to Paul Shapiro. He seams various music styles and forms a saucy cohesive storyline. The entwining patterns are a great challenge that takes the mind of a genius. Though “Essen” is the only song of its kind on the album, it is enough to bring together music from different cultures and maybe even its people.
Shapiro calls his sonic collage an “Afro-Semitic mish-mash,” as he revives 40s Jewish-tinged jazz that became a staple in the repertoire of black jazz singers, such as Billy Eckstine, Eartha Kitt and Sammy Davis Jr. Essen is a look at what was in the heart of Shapiro’s Ribs And Brisket Revue, which he performed with his band in the basement of Cornelia Street Café in New York City. Shapiro’s music pays homage to the sacred musical traditions of Jewish heritage while exhibiting true Jackie Mason tact. SUPERFLU
LA CHANCE (2007)
320 KBPSI thought the band had vanished so I was quite happy that I could meet again with the bittersweet folk/chanson of French band Superflu. La Chance is their third album, the first in 6 years and, though the band has seen some line-up changes, its grace remains untouched. Funny thing that they chose to name their new album La Chance when that's exactly what the band's missed to gain the success it deserved.
Produced by Married Monk's Christian Quermalet (who also worked with Brittany's biggest star, Mr Yann Tiersen), this long play takes things where Tchin Tchin, Superflu's previous album, left things. No big surprises then but still this laid-back almost depressed way of singing everyday's life. La Chance is a trip into melancholia and a good one that is! Try it!1. Le vide est de retour

DMITRI SHOSTAKOVICH
SYMPHONY N°13 (2005)
320 KBPSThough there are many excellent recordings of the Shostakovich Symphony No. 13 'Babi Yar' available, this new recording by Mariss Jansons is the crowning achievement. Jansons is nearing completion of the entire Shostakovich cycle and this installment is by far the finest in a fine set. Though some may find this symphony episodic (it has been compared to Mahler's 'Das Lied von der Erde' as a symphonic song cycle1), Jansons makes the work intelligently cohesive. He finds the essence of each of the five movements and weaves the similarities of orchestration and poetry tightly. His vision is at one with Shostakovich and Yevtushenko.
The Bavarian Radio Symphony (Jansons is the Music Director of this orchestra) plays with complete command of the obstacles. The first desk playing is top notch and the 'sound' is as Russian as is needed for the success of the work. Jansons wisely selected Russian opera star Sergei Aleksashkin as soloist: his vocal quality is rich and dark and completely right for these Yevtushenko poems. His range of emotion is stunning. And completing the overall sound is the very fine Men's chorus from the Bavarian Radio Chorus. The Sonics are superb.
Hands down this is the recording of choice for this extraordinary symphony. It should receive the Grammy for Orchestral Recording! Very Highly Recommended.Symphony No. 13 in B flat minor Op. 113

The Rose is a 1979 musical-drama film which tells the story of a self-destructive 1960s rock star who struggles to cope with the constant pressures of her career and the demands of her ruthless business manager. The film stars Bette Midler, Alan Bates, Frederic Forrest, Harry Dean Stanton, Barry Primus, and David Keith.
The story is loosely based on the life of Janis Joplin. It was written by Michael Cimino, who went uncredited, and Bo Goldman from a story by Bill Kerby, and directed by Mark Rydell.
The Rose was nominated for four Academy Awards including Best Actor in a Supporting Role (Frederic Forrest), Best Actress in a Leading Role (Bette Midler, in her screen debut), Best Film Editing and Best Sound.
Synospis:
In 1969, Mary Rose Foster is a famous rock 'n' roll diva known as The Rose. Although a success, she is burnt out and lonely but is kept working by her gruff, greedy manager and promoter Rudge Campbell. Though loud and brassy, Rose is an insecure alcoholic and former drug user who seems to crave approval in her life. As such, she is determined to return to her hometown, now as a superstar. After being humiliated by a country singing star named Billy Ray whose songs she performs in her show, Rose takes off with a limousine driver named Houston Dyer and begins a romance with him. They hang out at a nightclub, where Rose used to perform, only for her to sing with a bunch of female impersonators.
Rudge thinks Houston is just another hanger on, but Rose thinks she has finally met her true love. Houston tells her that he is actually an AWOL sergeant from the Army, and she tells him of her past in Florida. They have a rocky relationship and her lifestyle of "Drugs, Sex, and Rock & Roll" and constant touring lead her to an inevitable breakdown. The final act that breaks them apart is him witnessing her passionately kissing her former lesbian lover Sarah Willingham. 320 KBPSIf Bette Midler ever gets inducted into the rock and roll hall of fame, she can call "the rose" her ticket in. Her performance in this movie, both as an actor and as a singer, reached new heights, and she has probably never been better at either. Blues and rock'n roll suit her so well you have to wonder why she didn't go this route again. High point: her version of "When a man loves a woman" which gives a well known, done-to-death classic a new spin. Midler AC fans will also bask in the light of the main theme. Ignored at the academy awards (although Bette's performance wasn't) the song did win the Golden Globe months before becoming a big radio hit.The soundtrack also earned Bette the Grammy for best female pop performance of 1980.1. YUNGCHEN LHAMO

320 KBPSYungchen Lhamo's third album finds the Tibetan songstress in firm control of her own destiny. She's a singer who works best in the abstract, unshackled by bass or rhythms, where her voice can soar freely, as it does on the glorious "Someday." It's curious that by comparison, "Fade Away," a fairly adventurous piece for most singers, comes across as relatively mundane and far too grounded in the everyday (even the lovely tones of Annie Lennox don't send it to the stratosphere, although it's one of her best performances in years). It's an album of surprises, like "9/11," which is elegiac and achingly sad, Lhamo's art at its most sublime. This is an album that's been a long time coming, but it's worth the wait, unhurried, a piece of art rather than commerce. The opener, "Ranzen," finds her offering messages of inspiration to her former countrymen, and the disc comes full circle by closing with an ode to "Lhasa," her birthplace, accompanied by airy National guitar. In some ways this is the ideal new age album, beautifully spiritual, often seeming to not be of this planet. But it's so perfectly free of clichés and powered by imagination that it transcends genre. BELLY OF THE SUN (2002)
320 KBPSCassandra Wilson continues to move down a highly eclectic path on Belly of the Sun, the somewhat belated follow-up to Traveling Miles. While displaying a jazz singer's mastery of melodic nuance and improvisatory phrasing, Wilson draws on a variety of non-jazz idioms — roots music, rock, Delta blues, country, soul — to create a kind of earthy, intelligent pop with obvious crossover appeal. Her core band includes guitarists Marvin Sewell and Kevin Breit, who blend marvelously, Sewell mostly on mellow acoustic and Breit adding atmospheric touches on electric, 12-string, and slide guitars, as well as mandolin, banjo, and even bouzouki. Bassist Mark Peterson and percussionists Jeffrey Haynes and Cyro Baptista provide a superbly sensitive rhythmic foundation. But because Wilson returned to her home state of Mississippi to record most of this album, she made sure to book some time with local musicians. Thus guitarist Jesse Robinson guests on (and co-writes) the funky "Show Me a Love," and the octogenarian pianist "Boogaloo" Ames plays an unpolished yet utterly heartfelt duet with Wilson on the classic "Darkness on the Delta." Other guests include drummer Xavyon Jamison, trumpeter Olu Dara, pianist and vocalist Rhonda Richmond (who penned the slowly swaying "Road So Clear"), guitarist Richard Johnston, backup vocalists Patrice Monell, Jewell Bass, Henry Rhodes, and Vasti Jackson, and the children of New York's Middle School 44. Wilson delves into vintage blues with Mississippi Fred McDowell's "You Gotta Move" and a brief yet dynamic rendition of Robert Johnson's "Hot Tamales." But the best tracks are the rock/pop covers: the Band's "The Weight," Bob Dylan's "Shelter From the Storm," James Taylor's "Only a Dream in Rio," Jobim's "Waters of March," and Jimmy Webb's "Wichita Lineman" (a 1968 hit for Glen Campbell). Wilson and band are in peak interpretive form on these ethereal reinventions. While her own lyrics may not rise to the level of a Robbie Robertson or a Bob Dylan, her versatility and focus come through clearly on the originals "Justice," "Just a Parade" (a collaboration with neo-soul rookie India.Arie), and the Caribbean-tinged "Cooter Brown."1. A CAMP (2001)
320 KBPSWell, I spend too much time listening to too much music, but, sometimes, it's worth the waste of time with nonsense rock bands and useless techno beats. Sometimes, rising from almost nowhere, miraculous music comes to my hears and grabs my soul? Sometimes?
And, sometimes, it's the smooth and sensual voice of Nina Persson (from The Cardigans) that feels so good. To tell you the truth, she's maybe the only reason why I love this lounge pop band from Sweden so much, because her voice enlightens the songs. Well, that what it does to me anyway. So now you understand how happy I was when I learned she was releasing her first solo effort (a side project) under the peculiar name of A CAMP (the biography on the band's site explains everything).
First impression, the cover (I cannot use the term artwork) is pretty ugly, but I don't give a f**k about damn artwork. As long as the music's good, and, with Nina, I'm almost never disappointed. And if you feel the same, you won't be disappointed this time, either.
Musically, we're in the classic pop range: beautiful arrangements and classy production. The band Nina worked with here isn't made of a bunch of losers either; judge for yourself: Mark Linkous (from Sparklehorse) produced, arranged, and played various instruments on the album. The rest of the band consists of various Sparklehorse members (what a surprise!), musicians from Shudder to Think, studio musicians from the States (where the recording took place) and Sweden (of course!). And with Nina's voice on top ... well ... one word always comes to my mind when listening to Nina's voice: POP! So there's the kinda stuff we're dealing with here. The music's clearly classic pop-oriented (with a country/folky touch) as the instruments used show: strings, mellotron, horns etc. But Mark and Nina haven't forgot to include the best of what technology has brought such as samplers and drum machines. This creates a pretty nice background where the songs (mostly written with Nicolas Frisk of Sweet Chariots, a Swedish pop band) perfectly fit.
The first track, "Frequent Flyer," is also the first winner here. This will remind you of The Cardigans, and it's a good song, but the arrangements (less "loungy" than those of The Cardigans) create a completely different mood. Then comes "I Can Buy You," the first single off the album, which definitely shows the quality of songwriting and the strong feeling of melancholy spreading through the whole CD (with the exception of the killer "Hard as a Stone," showing Joan Jett and Co. how to properly sing a heavy rock song). Track by track, the album flows, and I can't think of anything but what came to mind the first time I listened to Elliott Smith's Either/Or: "How come nobody wrote these songs before?" CARBON GLACIER (2004)
320 KBPSIt all started with Carbon Glacier. While some had the foresight to determine that Seattle songstress Laura Veirs would grow to be one of the indie world’s most upstanding women on her debut, Troubled By The Fire, it wasn’t until the release of 2004’s Carbon Glacier that people paid much attention to the intricate layers of Veirs’ music.
And that’s the beauty of it all. Her then backup band, The Tortured Souls (now called The Saltbreakers), featuring producer Tucker Martine (The Decemberists, Modest Mouse) helps form and develop these complex layers that somehow maintain a minimalist mystique. Veirs’ vocals are always front and center and the backdrop never gets too heavy, yet the elements are all there, slowly working together, both orchestral and acoustic.
Lyrics of the elements pervade the songs of Carbon Glacier, named after the literal glacier near Mt. Rainier in the Pacific Northwest. “Wind Blows the Stars” features light violin atop Veirs’ acoustic lullabic strumming and finds her urging, “Take jumps in wintry lakes/ Feel the water’s skin and face/ Huddle up close nice and tight/ We might absorb enough moonlight.” Other times, the skies above provide an astrological hopefulness like on “Riptide” when she sings, “Oh starry night come and chart a course/ Or send me a boat with an anchor set/ I’ll pull myself ashore.” 1. BRISA ROCHE
THE CHASE (2005)
320 KBPSBrisa Roché made a name for herself as a sultry indie songstress while she lived in France in the early 2000s. She was born in California, where her next-door neighbor taught her how to play the drums on a homemade practice pad. Roché eventually switched to the guitar, which she played incessantly while living in her mother and stepfather's electricity-free cabin in northern California. She moved to Seattle when she was 16 in order to be with her ailing father, who passed away soon after she moved there. She managed to finish high school in Seattle, earning her keep as a live-in nanny, and played with a band called the Amazing Dimestore. At 18 Roché moved to Paris, where she formed a roots trio, but she returned to the States soon after in order to attend Reed College, where she played with an emo group called Bing Ra. Frustrated with the band, she left and temporarily gave up music altogether. Then she discovered jazz, taught herself some standards, and started gigging around town. She fell in love with a bassist soon after that and moved to New Mexico. When the relationship ended, she moved back to Paris in order to pursue a career as a jazz vocalist. The industry took notice of Roché (she gained quite a following at her Paris gigs), and she was signed to Blue Note in 2005. Her debut full-length, a retro-loungey indie pop affair called The Chase, was released the following year. 1. Airplane

FRIDA HYVÖNEN

320 KBPSThe vast landscape of Sweden seems to be fertile landscape for great music. Not only is it home to many metal acts, it also breeds emotional, heartfelt songwriters like Frida Hyvönen. Frida is a piano player but she has taken to songwriting as no one else. Her songs don't sound like the typical female songwriter songs. No, she seems to have found her own voice and her own style. She probably has fellow Swede's The Concretes for her exposure and for her deal with Secretly Canadian. The signed her to their Licking Fingers label and released this album domestically. The songs are all quite diverse even though they pretty much just consist of Frida and her piano. "You Never Got Me Right" is probably the most rocking of the set and it is more than impressive. The next track, "Once I Was A Serene Teenaged Child" she sings about a cock against her thigh. Yeah, Frida could be considered the Swedish Tori Amos, sexy indeed. If you have been bored from todays female singers then I would recommend Hyvonen. She is able to add some great individualism to the tried and true piano ballads.1. I Drive My Friend

320 KBPSAtlantique is a French/Vietnamese singer that had quite some success with this album (her first and only to my knowledge). Her voice, sweet, sensual, almost child-like at times, inhabits perfectly this mix of soft jazz, pop and soul. The two hits of this album, "Nelson" and Antonio Carlos Jobim's cover "Les eaux de Mars", are but the top of the iceberg of a savoury long-play performed by apt musicians with a production that has the major advantage of its intemporality. Too bad Atlantique since vanished in the midst of anonimity when far less talented singers made a career... Anyway, this sweet album is now on Moodswings music so.... Enjoy!1. Pourquoi faire

320 KBPSMaybe the first signs of Yes looking to become more 'commercial' in approach.Mostly shorter tracks but none are actually bad, there just isn't an "Awaken" amongst them. Still some good stuff with, for example, "On The Silent Wings of Freedom" and "Arriving UFO" that well demonstrate Yes' great ability as musicians. This might be "second division Yes" but still better than many other progressive rock bands are, even at their best! 320 KBPSIf Cyro Baptista’s Banquet of the Spirits does nothing more for you than to kindle some faint interest in the fascinating concept of Anthropofagia, that alone would be more than worth the purchase price. Look it up, it’s fucking awesome. But even if you don’t like doing a little reading in order to more deeply appreciate your music, this album is still very well worth your hard earned music purchasing dollars. There’s more than enough happening here to grab a hold of even the most casual of adventurous music listeners. Banquet of the Spirits is world music in the most literal sense of the phrase—traveling from continent to continent in a single song and creating intriguing new lands in the process.
If you like mind-bogglingly precise rhythms and instrumental tightness interspersed with free jazz freakouts, then Banquet of the Spirits is for you. GREEN CARNATION
A BLESSING IN DISGUISE (2003)
320 KBPSThose expecting a sequel to 2001's monumental "Light of Day, Day of Darkness" were surprised to say the least. Tchort and company took their uncanny songwriting abilities in a somewhat different direction, crafting an album with separate songs (a definite change from "LoD,DoD"s 60-minute track) and only incorporating movements or echoes from their previous effort.
Having said that, "A Blessing in Disguise" is equal parts hard-rocking and beautiful. The opening song, "Crushed to Dust" says everything in the title. Both catchy and aggressive, the song starts the album off on a very positive note, giving the listener a hefty taste of guitar-crunch and twangy keyboards. From the very start it is apparent that Tchort has left his northern, forest home and embraced the life of a modern-day headbanger. There is even a part of the song (beginning at 3:07) that sounds shockingly like something you'd find in Metallica's "ReLoad" (but no worries - it lasts for only about 15 seconds).
So, let's breathe for a moment now. "Lullaby in Winter" - again, a song whose title perfectly describes its sound. It begins with clean guitars and a march-like snare drum, leading into Kjetil Nordhus' delicate and vulnerable voice. "Writings on the Wall" showcases Green Carnation's razor-sharp guitar-work, and "Into Deep" closely resembles "LoD,DoD"s epic sound, combining strings with particularly hurtful vocal passages.
The beauty of the album is that no two songs are alike. Unlike "LoD,DoD"s segues that would often get mistaken for repeated riffs, "A Blessing in Disguise" is composed of absolutely unique songs that stand alone perfectly. In fact, if I were to give each song a rating, only two songs would fall short of `excellent', namely the excessively melancholic "Two Seconds in Life", and the somewhat lackluster closing track, "Rain". Besides these less-than-stellar pieces, the album is a true accomplishment for a daring and courageous band. Progression, indeed. 1. Crushed To Dust
