Which comes first, the chicken or the egg?

In all my years I have spent quite a bit of time thinking. That doesn't really mean much except that I probably haven't spent much time doing. Anyway this thought has been plaguing me the past couple of days: "If we had done things differently earlier in our lives would we still have become the person we are today? Or...would we have had to be a different person to have done things differently earlier in our life?"
