CSSing your my.opera site - the basic usage

,

I really can't recall whom I promised to write a small lesson about HOWTO even get your own CSS code working in my.opera.com, but I thought it was about time to sit down and do it. So if you're new to my.opera.com and want to modify your blog design, go ahead and read it all... and if you don't then feel free to read the other posts about CSS I wrote here.

CSSing your my.opera-site - part 6

,

Okay... long time no see, huh? I've been very busy the last few weeks, so I had not much time for some new CSS. Today I took some hours to create a new design, but I'm not really happy about the way it turned out. While Firefox and Safari show the menu just as intended, Opera disables links when you set the font-size to zero, and if you set it to 0.01 (which is close enough to zero so Firefox and Safari still show nothing) it uses the predefined size, at least 1px.

So I wrote a small demand to the my.opera-devs, so they hopefully put the text inside a span-tag so I can format the text dispay:none, while the link itself should still work.

UPDATE:
Thanks to my friend Dasch I was able to fix the menu for Opera. He suggested using a negative text-indent, which in fact was a brilliant idea and worked without any problems at all!
So I decided to call it a usual CSSing lesson now.

BUT I still have something for you... oh yes, I do. I will show you what the usage of "sprites" can do for you... and me... and us too.

my new laptop could almost hide behind my Wii

Yeah, finally I got one! I am the proud owner of a laptop... sort of... in fact it is a netbook made by Asus called EeePC 1000H. That's one of the top models with a hard disc drive (160GB), 1.3Mpixel webcam, large cells for great mobility and so on... (only misses a DVD-Drive, but that I really don't need that much).

This little thingy will guide me from now on... to work, to customers, to my holidays, to my shower... uh... okay, except for my shower.
I already installed Opera (see photo) and some developer software I need, so this netbook can replace my desktop PC if necessary. Furthermore I'll now be able to prepare customer seminars and presentations and execute those from my "new toy".

Right now I'm writing this post with my netbook and unlike the smaller ones, this features a pretty normal keyboard. Pretty easy to learn to use it. I even managed to install some software that usually only works with a CD/DVD-ROM inserted, by copying to a USB stick using my desktop PC, then installing it from the USB stick onto the EeePC and afterwards just disabling the CD-ROM routine for the software. Et voilà: It works without a CD-ROM.

I'm looking forward to use it every day now, reducing power consumption and time I usually needed for syncing my stuff.

the Ultimate Meeting 2008 website is online

,

Finally the website is live (2008.tum-party.net), so I happily announce that I'll be surely there at the end of this year. I already started to prepare my graphics entry (about 50% are already done) and maybe I'll try to do some more stuff for the Ultimate Meeting 2008.

My current project: colorfoto-creativ.de

Some might wonder, what I'm actually doing right now when I'm working (and not managing my team of developers). Currently I'm developing (and bugfixing) a website community targeting at professional and semi-professional photographers, called "colorfoto-creativ.de".

The profect is derived from the german reference magazine for photography and camera technology "ColorFoto" and shall give creative photographers to earn fame (and some money) by getting the best photos released there into the print issue of the magazine.

Technically the whole website is based on TYPO3, an open source content management system, that we extended with several pretty neat functions.

We're still highly beta and sadly german only, but still it's really worth a look I think. There are indeed some very impressive photos posted. Our customer is still very happy with the project and will surely give us follow up jobs.
