Fnordian Reveries

One toke over the line

Christmas loot

I thought I'd post a quick update now that I've got most of my gift cards spent at the various retail establishments.

Here's a few comments about some of the notable items that I could link:

iPod Shuffle rating: B+
While it's a bit of a downer to not have the ability to skip to any song you want, it's nice to set & forget your playlist & just let the thing run while you work. I don't necesarily enjoy the shuffle feature on the unit, as it's not entirely random. Maybe it's because I've only filled up 500MB or so of the 1GB space, but I've heard the same songs more than I thought I should. Being an album guy though, I'd rather just rip an album to it and listen straight through anyway. It didn't get an A- rating because you have to register a credit card on the iTunes store to even use the damn thing & iTunes.

*One good thing about the iPod... it's prompted me to start looking at audio editing software. So far I've found Audacity and dBpoweramp to be valuable tools for making stuff like ringtones on the cheap (aka: free).

Puscifer album: A++
This album simply rocks. Vocals sometimes a bit like A Perfect Circle, but generally a good chill-out, funky album. Nothing heavy here as far as guitars & double-bass... just a good f*cking album.

Tool DVD: A+
Simply put... Adam Jones & Co. do it again with gusto.

NIN album: A-
I enjoyed it. If you dig NIN remix albums, you'll like this one. It's not Further Down the Spiral, but it's good.

In Living Color
No rating yet, but I got the first 2 seasons for US$5.00 ea at an after-Christmas sale. I couldn't afford not to buy them. Got 'em along with Night at the Museum, Ghost Rider, and Harry Potter: Order of the Phoenix for the lady.

Planetary Design French Press: A
This thing ROCKS & beats the pants off any presses I've been familiar with before now. Sturdy design, easy to clean, not a million parts. Basically the caraffe, the lid, and the plunger. Simple, effective, makes great coffee.

So I don't forget...

I'm posting this here because I keep forgetting how to reset the Ctrl + W function in Opera every time I upgrade to the latest version. I'm too lazy to keep searching forums & back up my previous settings. p:

Down: Saturday, 10/20/07 @ Bogarts - Cincinnati, OH

Down will be at Bogarts next month. Their new album went on sale today.

PC Update Resources

In addition to Windows Updates (like Office Update and Microsoft Update, both of which require MSIE), these two sites can be very helpful for updating third-party software and drivers.

Secunia Software Inspector
Requires Java; works best in Opera and Firefox

DriverAgent.com Scanner
Uses ActiveX or third-party download/install; works best in MSIE

ISP change will effect my website

I'm changing ISP's from Time Warner's Road Runner to DSL. I couldn't pass up better upload speeds and comparable download speeds for half the price. Go f*ck yourself Time Warner. bye I swear if they tried to sell me another package deal in attempt to get my internet price down (the old spend more to save a little trick) I was going to stab someone in the neck. :ninja:

Anyway...

As a result, I took my website off their webspace until I find a new host somewhere. Until that time, I'll be using this blog to post news & other unrelated jibber-jabber. I need to update it anyway.

New Machine Head album: The Blackening

Machine Head (UBL) fans will be happy to note that their new album, The Blackening is anything but dull.

Most of their sound is a throw-back to their old style of heavy crunch (this is good), and topics focus a lot on the Iraq war & the Bush administration. While this makes for a good source anger, I found myself hoping for some different subject matter at different points on the record. That didn't detract too much from the rating though - overall the energy is awesome.

The best selling point on The Blackening for me was the songs that span beyond the 8-9 minute mark (there are many). The length of the tracks allowed the guitars some breathing room to work, which isn't that common anymore, even in heavy music. They don't disappoint - these guys have some chops.

Overall rating out of 5: :headbang: :headbang: :headbang: :headbang:

Two Fractal Finds

One of the better fractal galleries I've seen in a while.

An interesting screen saver. I've been looking for a Dremples replacement for a while now (it's not supported in XP), and I might give it a try.

Knowledge is Power

I ran across this bit of FPS (First Person Shooter) terminology today. Since it gave me a good laugh, not to mention some fond memories of LANs & online shoot-outs, I thought I'd post it here for kicks.

"Teabagging" is the act of kneeling on someones face after killing them or being in a group with them when they are killed.

The inference is that you are filling their dead mouths with a heaping helping of your man fruit.

The female version of this is often refered to as a "slug trail."

Now you know, and knowing is half the battle.

Scoping out Media Monkey & the Trekstor Vibez

Media Monkey looks to be a promising app for my digital music collection, small as it is at the moment. I've yet to try it out.

I'm also keeping an eye on the 12GB Trekstor Vibez DAP for a possible post-holiday gift to myself. This thing is sexy. With a 15GB version on the horizon, I may wait until it's released in hopes that it'll drive the price of the 12GB down.
