SearchEdit - search.ini Editor for Opera

Nice program, the "Multi searches" feature reminds me of an item in my wishlist I asked for ages ago.

Two things missing after using it for a while, for helping when sorting the entries.
One is favicons for the search engines, the same as in the opera search manager. The second is the ability to move more than one search engine at a time (holding down ctrl and selecting the engines to be moved as an example). If that is difficult with java then a way to select a couple of engines and have them grouped together, and maybe even adding separators automatically at the beggining and end of the group.

Favicons are difficult, because SeachEdit must cache the icons on different ways: From searches of the standard search.ini and from personally searches. Searchedit can try to download and store the favicons or Searchedit can use the favicons from Opera. I dont know, what is the better way.
Second:
Multiple selection is possible with java. First it was easier to implement single selection, because SE should be a easy way to sort searches.

Yes I see you point, and Opera people change the way they handle files from time to time, so if you ever plan to do this after two minutes of thinking this my vote goes for SeachEdit downloading the favicons.

I had some time to think this and the second idea to create groups of engines with a gui (like the one for supersearches) seems like a better way to do this. So you have a window with all the searches, tickboxes next to each entry and a button to group engines together.

Yes. Use the move up and move down arrow of SearchEdit.

hmmmm! Isn't that easy to pull with a sort function so we have a one-size sorts all button ?

Do you mean a button to sort search engines alphabetic or by search type?

How do I set up SearchEdit and merge search.ini's in Xandros (Debian)?

I copied my (WinXP) search.ini to (Xandros) /home/user/.opera/search.ini, but the order is somewhat scrambled.

Where is the Xandros "Opera install" directory?

In my sidux (Debian)

/usr/share/opera

you can find in shell with

whereis opera

or search for the default search.ini with

locate search.ini

To elaborate: searches for Opera 9.64 on my EEEPC (Xandros) are somewhat but not exactly in the order that I ported from my WinXP

I had successfully merged, sorted, and inserted separators on my WinXP to my liking. I then renamed /usr/share/opera/search.ini (the "install directory"). Next I replaced /home/user/.opera/search.ini with the WinXP version, but no joy, it appears in a slightly different order.

your global search.ini is not in "/usr/share/opera". your global search.ini is stored in a sub folder in "/usr/share/opera/locale", depending on the locale.

The good news is that SearchEdit is great! Works perfectly on my WinXP. Installed instantly. And now works on my Asus 901 EEEPC (Xandros) after routing around some dead brain cells in order to set the appropriate permissions on start.sh (now startsearchedit.sh).

The bad news is that the order and separation of my searches is still somewhat scrambled, even after taking the steps below. Amazon, eBay, and Bittorrent have the Ask icon, Yahoo has the magnifying glass icon, Yahoo Shopping (and some others) is missing. Something in Opera (Link sync?) is still scrambling things.

Browser ID says, "Opera/9.64 (X11; Linux i686; U; en) Presto/2.1.1", so I'm guessing my locale is en. I have disabled these search.ini files by renaming them:

/usr/share/opera/search.ini
/home/user/.opera/search.ini (replaced w/WinXP ver.)
/usr/share/opera/locale/en/search.ini (per your suggestion)

Still no joy.

I am about to give up. Thanks, anyway, for your help.

UPDATE: problem solved!

1. Disabled Link/sync and quit Opera;
2. once again, deleted /home/user/.opera/search.ini;
3. once again, replaced it with WinXP versiion of search.ini;
4. started Opers--searches are as I want!
5. forced a sync in my WinXP Opera--searches still OK;
6. enabled sync in EEEPC Opera--searches still OK!

I do not know if disabling sync was necessary, but it did not hurt.

Opera 10 beta 1691 ... separator value appears to be -1 rather than 1

We are aware of search.ini's with the -1 value and are discussing at the moment the cause and consequences.
At the moment Opera with his separator values shows us some odd behaviour when Opera Link is enabled...

lol, I have no idea ,,,, because something is being tested ?

After manually changing the value from 1 to -1 (Linux build 4520), Opera redress to 1

I try to understand why some users have still -1 in their search.ini
