One recently returned from a holiday in Mexico and another from Tenerife. Conversation turned to the behaviour of other foreign holidaymakers at their resorts.
Now, of course, foreigners are different. This is a good thing. Even when the differences seem bizarre and even wrong, they are interesting and educational. To me, noting such differences is one of the joys of travelling abroad.
However, I could barely contain myself when these stories were constant laced with casual xenophobia. Any story about Germans used the phrase "Nazi Germans", whilst a couple of other nationalities were similarly dismissed for their stereotypical (and negative) images.
All this was done "for a laugh" and I'm sure the girls would say they meant no harm, but I actually got massively offended by the way they constantly used such phrases and laughed more each time. Unfortunately I'm a rather meek person and a really terrible debater/arguer, so I know better than to get involved, especially when these are not the kind of people who will listen to an alternative point of view and say "hmm, yes you have a point there".
Is there any hope for the world?
