This goes out to all my friends.

Some friends forget,
Some move away,
Some keep silent,
Some just change,
But I am not one of them,
I am here for just two moments,
'Now and Forever'.

Wishing everyone a very happy friendship day.

Just witnessed the Solar Eclipse

The moon and the earth, on their annual waltz around the sun, have reached that step when the moon casts its gigantic shadow on the surface of the earth. And we earth-lings become witness to a jig of celestial proportions.

Its truly an awe-inspiring spectacle and a very humbling experience. It just goes to remind you that no matter how far ahead humankind gets, it will eternally remain a small speck, easily obscured even by the moon's shadow!

Safety note: You should not look at the sun with you naked eyes, under any circumstances, especially so on eclipse days. If you do not have proper eye protection you may suffer permanent eye damage. Sunglasses and smoked glass are not adequate protection. Unexposed films do not work as well.

If you wish to observe the eclipse buy specialized glasses from you local observatory or planetarium. I used specialized UV lab glasses PLUS a welder's screen. (Better safe than sorry!)

Any way, unless its a total eclipse, the naked eye can not adjudge the partial eclipse. You need an adjustable iris (similar to the aperture control on you camera) or a darkening UV filter.

My brand new Ubuntu 'Hardy Heron' install

,

As I mentioned before, I crowned Ubuntu 8.04 the sole ruler of my computer, here are some screen-shots from its fresh coronation... uh...installation.

======================================================
The desktop.

Ubuntu has a new default wallpaper, of an abstract heron.
Why heron? Because the version is codenamed 'Hardy Heron'
...nice wallpaper methinks.

Amrok Music player

Its playing one of my favourite ragtime songs of all times 'The Entertainer' by Scott Joplin.
On that note (or chord :D )...
A little 'About Me'... I like ragtime music, my second most favourite ragtime song is Joseph Lamb's 'The Top Liner'.

My commentary on the OS
In general the interface is very smooth and refined. I might not agree wholly with the orange-brown color scheme however its refreshing on the whole. art.gnome.com has a whole lot of themes to try out so the default color scheme is not a problem at all.
All in all a well built distro.

A little advice...
If you are new to linux, and looking to switch then you might want to use OpenSUSE 11 or Fedora 9. All though Ubuntu is very user friendly, I did come across a few situations during the install and setup where a little linux knowledge was necessary. For example while setting up the Internet connection a significant knowledge of terminal commands were required. Where as both Fedora and OpenSuse make it GUI driven, thus making it easier for beginners to follow.
PS: I say this for Fedora 8 and OpenSuse 10, and presume it to be true for the newest versions also. I haven't had the chance to try out the latest builds unfortunately.

Cheers

Sent Windows Xp to the Recycle Bin

,

The day before yesterday my Windows Xp setup failed on me.

Cursing my luck, I quietly backed up my data (through a live Fedora boot up), formatted my hard-disk and sat through the three-and-half hour XP re-installation. Unfortunately Microsoft doesn't end your drudgery there. First up you have to reinstall critical drivers so the Xp can recognize all devices. Then you need to put in your anti virus and firewall up so Xp stays safe. It doesn't end there either, you then have to download and run the gazillion security patches and Microsoft updates that Microsoft has clocked up since you bought your Xp install disk. All this translated to about 6 hours of work, 50 odd reboots and about 500MB's of downloads.:ko:

Anyway, hard-work done, I was just settling back in into my system. I copied most of my data back and was just about getting comfy when disaster of disasters, it happened all over again. :faint:

= At this point proceed to read the second paragraph from the top with a lot more swearing and colourful language. =

Yup, it happened a third time too.... :bomb:

I sat a record 15 straight hours tinkering about, checking for hardware inconsistencies, re-formatting and reinstalling XP. I was reduced to sort of a next-clicking-reinstalling-patch-updating robot. I slept for about 4 hours before I was back doing the same thing nearly all day yesterday. Till finally by nightfall my patience wore out. (I have a really long fuse don't I? )

note: I took periodic breaks and short walk during the entire 15 hour stretch plus the marathon the next day... and so should you... continuously staring at your screen, or sitting in the same position for extended periods of time can and will damage your body.

I sent Xp to exactly where i belongs .... :knight: and installed Linux. Ubuntu 8.04 to be precise.

I wanted to install Fedora 9 but I had the ubuntu disk lying about and Fedora is simply too large a download [5 CDs or 1 DVD] Ubuntu took about 15 mins to install, and it came preloaded with all required drivers and essential software ....
Quick, easy, painless ......:hat:

I might give the Xp installer a call some time in the future again [sadly ... nothing beats microsoft's Visual c++ and Visual c# ...:frown: ], but till then I am all linux!

Screenshots from my new install comming in my next post.....
Screenshots are up..... go here

This post proudly comes to you from Opera 9.51 installed on an linux 2.6.24-19-generic kenel powered by Ubuntu 'Hardy heron'.

The Shaunak standard micro preamplifier

,

Ladies and Gentlemen,
Presenting the "Shaunak standard micro preamplifier"!
Click through the image for a bigger picture

This is a small signal amplifier. It was built with the intention of increasing the faint signals from my guitar and keyboard so that I could feed it into my computer sound card for recording. Just for the sake of it I added the speaker and I was pleasantly surprised to find out that such a small unit could sufficiently drive a 4" cone.

Its clear, neat, tiny and has amazing treble response! I coupled it with my portable CD player to make a gadget reminiscent of a gramophone! The base response is not the best though.

Sound sample:
Here are twenty seconds of my very mediocore guitar strumming in MP3 format.

Oddest places to find Platinum

The other day I happened to chance upon an platinized platinum anode in an electrolytic cell and started pondering about the exotic uses of this $2,032 per ounce metal. Platinum is one heckuva useful metal and find a whole variety of applications. A little thought got me compiling this list.
Oh, by the way, if you are wondering, platinized platinum is basically blackened platinum.

FIVE STRANGEST PLACES TO FIND PLATINUM

1. In your car exhaust.
Platinum honeycomb patterns are fitted at the end of all modern car exhausts. Platinum is and excellent catalyst and can oxidise toxic exhaust fumes like carbon monoxide to carbon dioxide and nitrogen oxide(s) to oxygen and nitrogen.

2. In crucibles.
Platinum and its Rhodium alloys can withstand for high temperatures used for the melting of glass and ceramic glazing.

3. In space shuttles and 'green' cars.
The fuel cells use Platinum as a catalyst. Without the powdered platinum (imagine powdering Platinum!) the cell reaction would be unsustainable.

4. At the photo-shop.
Archival prints are made with platinum based inks. (normal prints are made using silver compounds) As opposed to silver platinum is more inert and hence less likely to oxidise, thus making for longer lasting prints. Plus platinum prints have exhibit better contrast.
Note: Imm speaking of traditional prints not digital ones. Digital archival prints are made using fused toner particles or electrostatic inks. Look in here for more.

5. In furnaces.
Platinum thermocouples, generally called 's type' thermos, are used to monitor the high temperatures of a furnace, because needless to say, mercury would vaporize at those temperatures.

Apart from these five,
* Platinum finds regular uses in the chemistry lab for 'flame tests' and for use in electrolytic cells.
* Plates which are used to repair broken bones are made of a Platinum-Iridium alloy.
* Platinum improves the data storage capacity of hard disks and today, all hard disks contain platinum in their magnetic layers.
* The ^tiny^ electrical contacts INSIDE you processor (or any Integrated Circuit, or 'chip')are made of platinum-palladium.
* Most gas sensors utilize a 'hot-wire' transducer or a 'Pirani Gauge'. Needless to say the "hot-wire" is made of Platinum!
* Platinum is used to catalyse the manufacture of Nylon-66, which inturn is used to make everything from fishing lines, to clothes, to bullet proof vests [Kevlar is a tradename].
* Contacts or jacks in professional audio equipment are made of platinum to reduce the signal to noise ratio.

With that, my knowledge of chemistry exhausts so I will stem the list here and shut up.

Shame to waste such an usefull metal on a ring isnt it? No.....You dont think so?....I thought so! :coffee:

Support Germany

Ths sunday, Germany go up against Spain in the final of the 2008 UEFA European Football Championship.

I am backing Germany and hope everybody else does so too!

If Miroslav Klose and Lukas Podolski can find their goal scoring feet, Michael Ballack can push in his long crosses and freekicks accurately, Lamb solidifies the central defence and Jens Lehmann keeps a few out, as sure as eggs Spain are heading for the silver this year.

Go germany!!
