The Mumbai Seige Rages On

,

Nearly 24 hours have passed and the situation is still critical. The Army has been called in. The authorities are still trading gunfire with the terrorists.

As night falls information still remains sketchy, and hard to come by. No clear idea has emerged about the magnitude of damage, the number of terrorists or even the current situation.

Here's a picture I took of armed police patrolmen trying to catch up with the news up at a TV store:

The death toll so far stands at 127 dead and over 340 injured. 16 policemen including the chief if the Anti Terrorism Squadron have been killed.

The battle rages on at the Taj and Trident hotels, while the rest of the city returns to normal.

Massive terror attack in Mumbai

,

There are garbled reports coming in if a car bomb explosion in Vile Parle area, an explosion at the Santacruz International airport, there is an ongoing stand off between terrorists and the police in the CST train station and confirmed reports of undiscerning firing in front of the Oberoi hotel, V.T area, The Times of India office, BMC headquarters.
The areas I mentioned are spread over a twenty kilometer radius... that should give you an idea of the enormity of the attack.

Chaos rages on the streets of Mumbai as rumours are flying every where.

Nobody is really sure of the situation but so far it seems that there have been co-ordinated bomb explosions and man on man skirmishes with the police.
The terrorists seem to have taken a stand at the CST train terminus and are actively exchanging fire with the police. The gunfight has been raging for the past 45 Minutes. They seem to have taken some people hostage.

What's chilling for me is I was on a train home from the station under attack less than an hour ago. And I live less than 3 Kms away from the sight of the blast.

I just got home, the situation is still unfolding so I cant be really sure of the damage and scale. I will post updates as soon as I can.

UPDATE:
* One petrol pump has been blown up
* Death toll is believed to be 27
* One person arrested
* The car bomb explosion happened near my old school

Its going to be one long night tonight......

Opera Mini 4.2

I just installed Opera Mini 4.2 (the final version released today!), it is decisively the coolest phone browser *ever*.

 Stuff I love about it:

:star: Skins
Its skin-able again! So I can have my favourite black theme back! And this time around there is a whole range of choices, green, pink, blue, take your pick. Not to mention the browser itself looks a whole lot cooler.

:star: Speed
The new US server park defiantly helps increase speeds. Especially while synchronising with Opera Link.

:star: Opera Link
This is my *favourite* new function. Synchronized notes. No more copying-pasting-uploading to phone cycles. Just right click a body of text on my desktop Opera browser, select copy to note. Then simply walk away and all the notes will lie ready to access from you phone on the go. You don't even have to visit link.opera.com, then navigate to notes. Its all there, ready to access directly from the new interface.
You will find it under Bookmarks>Notes.

:star: Mobile Youtube
Whats the best thing to happen to youtube since youtube? Mobile youtube of course! It works! Videos do stream! Its a major bandwidth hog though.
Couldn't get mobile metacafe to stream though. But hey, they allow the next best thing, they allow you to download in 3gp format. [and depending on your phone model, you can playback during download]

:irked: And now my gripes: (lone gripe actually!)

:star: No copy-paste
Copy paste is still not supported. Nor can you download the notes to text format for use on your phone. So although you have access to the information, its still a little hard*er* to use. Hope fully this will be implemented by the next release.

Overall, a bloody good browser just got a whole lot better. It comes loaded with exciting new features, its fast, and hey, its available at a price you just cant beat! :sherlock:

The Nehalem cometh

, , ,

Intel has started shipping processors based on its brand new Nehalem micro-architecture. The line of processors previously codenamed Bloomfield (Named after the expected bloom in Intel's coffers perhaps? P:) now masquarades the markets as "Core i7".

Whats exciting is that the new architecture supports Triple Chanel DDR 3 memory. Its manufactured using the 45nm fabrication which will bring down power consumption. Hyper Threading walks in for its second innings. Needless to say, it tears apart every benchmark thrown at it. :chef:

But whats most exciting it the fact that the new line is actually priced lowed than the top end of the Core 2 lineup. Side effects of a gloomy economy or a by product of cheaper manufacturing techniques, who cares? Its new, fast and cheap (not exactly cheap, only comparitively cheaper, but prices are bound to fall). Sounds like a swell orrer to me.

Cant wait to get my grubby paws near one...:sherlock:

Start Google Chrome in Incognito mode.

As most people I hang out with know P: , Google chrome is the newest browser on the block. It has some pretty cool features, one of which is the incognito mode, which basically does not permanently store cookies and other session details on your computer.
Basically, no browsing history!
Although it wont keep the FBI out of your door, it is quite a nifty tool.

Here's a short guide on how to start Google chrome directly in incognito mode.

1> Create a new shortcut. Right click on the existing shortcut and select "new shortcut"

2> Rename the new shortcut to something cool.

3> Right click on the new shortcut> "Properties"

4> Add --incognito at the end of the target.

EDIT: Use / instead of -- for Vista.
Thanks to an anonymous commenter for that.

Launch incognito mode directly from your new shortcut.

Keep in mind: Incognito mode will not help you against pesky server side scripts which are hell bent on invading you privacy and will store your details on their disks. For that you need web sheilds and proxies.

BTW: Chrome is a free as in free beer download from google. Get it from here: http://www.google.com/chrome/index.html
