Year 2008 comes to an end

Sure 2008 was a pathetic year, the world lost money, people lost jobs, houses, lives. But the year had some good moments too. Here's recounting the best of 2K+8:

Summer Olympics
If I were to describe the opening of the Beijing Summer Olympics, the greatest show on earth would be an understatement. With more than 15,000 performers, and at the production cost of US$100 million, the four hour long ceremony was spectacular and spellbinding.

The games itself were amazing. World records were sequentially smashed to dust. Michael Phelps won a record 8 gold medals. The most by any Olympian at a single Olympics. Usain Bolt struck lightening on the tracks. And Yelena Isinbayeva broke her own world record, making that her 24th world record.
The summer Olymics, defiantely the highlight of the year.

2008 Brazilian Grand Prix
The most exciting motorsport race ever. Lewis Hamilton snached the world championship on the last bend of the last lap of the last grand prix! Now thats excitement. He also became the youngest to hold the prestegious title.

You have got to see it to believe it: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lyd5ftzINbs

Barack Obama elected president
The year also saw Barack Obama become president-elect of the United States. The first African American to be elected President.

Faith is taking the first step even when you don't see the whole staircase.
Martin Luther King, Jr.

So thats that. 2008 has had its positives, and negetives. Now its nearly over. And we all can look forward to a bright New Year.

Wishing every one a Happy and prosperous New Year!

Politically Incorrect: Indo Pak Flareup

Based on the Indo-Pak flareup following the tragic terrorist strike on Mumbai on 26-Nov-08.

Don't get me wrong. I detest war, and firmly believe that violence only begets violence.

But its funny to see how far these politicians will go to incite nationalistic feelings and garner a few votes for the upcoming General elections.

POTA: Prevention of Terrorist Activities Act
UAPA: The Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Amendment

Background:
The current ruling party repealed the "Prevention of Terrorist Activities Act" in 2004 citing that it could be misused and was too harsh. But after the Mumbai Terror attacks, it tabled a bill yesterday, looking to amend the The Unlawful Activities (Prevention) act into something that virtually is POTA renamed.

Old legislation on new paper.

I saw the televised debate yesterday, It was fun watching a red faced government defend itself against a very vindictive opposition.

IE Zero Day Flaw

Users of Microsoft's Internet Explorer are being urged by experts to switch to an alternate browser until a serious security flaw has been fixed.

The flaw in Microsoft's Internet Explorer could allow criminals to take control of people's computers and steal their passwords. Microsoft urged people to be vigilant while it investigated and prepared an emergency patch to resolve it. Microsoft says it has detected attacks against IE 7.0 but said the "underlying vulnerability" was present in all versions of the browser.

While Security bugs and IE have been strange bed fellows for a long time now, but for some people to find the flaw before Microsoft, and Microsoft having to scramble to develop a patch, thats scary.

Be smart, use Opera (or at least Chrome, Firefox or even Safari)

EDIT: I believe Microsoft has released a patch to address the flaw.

PS: Here's a brief documentation of IE's patches history.
