Dread and "Social Security"

, , , , ,

As I have mentioned before, I am recently married. Being a traditionalist in many regards, I plan on taking my husband's name. I have, admittedly, been putting this off.

It isn't that I don't want to do it. Its just such a very odd process. And I really dread going into the Social Security office.

This is what I have been told to do:
1. gather together the following documents: offical marriage license, drivers license, social security card, and passport.

2. go to the DMV (Department of motor vehicles) and show them: marriage license, driver's license and social security card (because my ssn is not on my license I have to show the card to get it renewed.) Have them update the license to my new name.

3. go to social security office. Show them: marriage license; driver's license with new name; passport with old name. (Do not bring birth certificate, because apparently anyone can get one of those...) and they will issue a new social security card.

It is just overly complicated and stupid. Plus the phrase "social security" just bugs me. It's supposed to make you feel all warm and fuzzy and people like to think it is supposed to be a safety net to help people avoid desperate poverty. Well, it was never intended to be anything more then pizza money for grannies and they might as well call it what it is: federal identification number. And while they are at it, they should say what they mean too: "Are your paper's in order?"

The SSN is primarily used as a tax payer identification number. It's how they track who has and hasn't paid their taxes. It isn't like they really care whether or not I have signed up for my social safety net. They aren't going to pay benefits to someone who isn't registered. What they want to know is if I paid my share to Uncle Sam.

And they want to know where I go, when I go and who I'm with. I can't get my driver's license without my social security card and I can't get on a plane without my driver's license. I'm always afraid when I travel. What if I get mugged and no longer have a driver's license. I'll be stranded! Trapped in some city I can't afford.

My sweetie thinks this is an indication that my life must be pretty ok, otherwise I would have real things to worry about. I should make him go to the Social Security office with me, but then we would both miss a day of work.

If your new hubby won't help out with all that paperwork schlepping, he must be a huge jerk. Why'd you marry him, anyhow?

Sarah,

How did you get the pupil in your eye to look like a heart? That is really cool.

Lagged2death,
I know my hubby will help with the schlepping... It's just a matter of doing it. Now I have to wait so that my ID will match the airline tickets I bought for some business trips... Gone are the days when one could travel in the comfort of anonymity in the US.
