Quintessential Fox

, ,

The pattern seems to be settled, at least for a brief while: the cold winter daylight hours bring the Old Dogfox while One-Eye is presumably resting in some hidden retreat.

I was interested to see the cat-like pupil in the Old Dogfox's eye in this crop - a detail that you can often only see when it reflects back as eyeshine.

Last night, I noticed the Chipped Vixen sniffing about on the back lawn, consuming some raisins or birdseed. Suddenly she flinched and looked towards the hedgerow. One-Eye emerged; he pays her little attention, at least as far as I can see, but she seems distinctly submissive towards him. They both searched the garden for a while. Surprisingly, my mother saw the Old Dogfox with the Survivor Vixen this afternoon! :eyes: One is inclined to wonder how this rather tangled situation is going to sort itself out.

As far as I know, the two big males have not actually met each other since the Old Dogfox returned. I sometimes hear foxtrot screams after dark, but it is impossible to know who is fighting who, or even which pack is involved. They are loud enough to carry a considerable distance, and in any case might well merely be the result of family quibbles over contested food.

Water has become a prized commodity as the temperature continues to stay relatively low. Heavy frost day after day has left much of the countryside looking as if it has been dusted with snow :eyes:

Good walking for the dogs...

...but dozing on a warm carpet afterwards is essential

One last comment for today - I was walking home from the local shops with Christmas shopping and noticed a little bird bobbling its tail on a roof top. T'was a grey wagtail - actually the first time I've ever seen one here in winter, and another one was perched in a nearby tree. It may be a surprise to no one that I don't often take my 500mm lens around the shops so...opportunity missed

However Words was luckier recently

That face of Old dogfox is really something... like he understands everything, right?

Adele 21. December 2007, 22:18

He's certainly a very smart fox, if he's managing to exist in the territory against One-Eye's will, which is what I suspect :eyes:

Of course, they are a very intelligent and inquisitive species, and they seem to have good memories too. After all his long years, he must have built up an impressive variety of experience on which to draw

What wonderful closeup photos of the fox. Very detailed.

I know such white meadows... it's here the same. But I think, the frosty periode is over now, I can see the first clouds, maybe we will get rain or snow soon?

Adele 22. December 2007, 08:52

@Mark - yep, frosty it was! It's warmer and duller here now though :frown:

Adele 22. December 2007, 08:54

@Elke - thanks! It's so much easier with him as he comes in daylight and will permit me to be outside with him! For the others in the garden, I'm often taking pictures from 60+ feet in the dark! :insane:

I did hear a rumour that some snow is possible on Christmas eve :eyes: I don't suppose we'll get proper snow until January, though.

Adele 22. December 2007, 11:01

I've had some classics of those situations in my time :frown:

Hope you enjoy your time here; have fun playing with the D300!

PS The Old Dogfox came again to the garden this morning but I was out looking at something which will be on my blog later!

Great close-up of the old fox  But I love the one of the two dogs out together. They look like they're having a ball  Shame about the grey wagtail missed opportunity, but such pretty birds.

Adele 22. December 2007, 19:23

Thanks! Leila and Chiara tend to zoom around together (having a ball indeed!) while Kelly keeps out of their way and does exploring on her own.

I went to look for the wagtails today and of course there were none to be found :bomb: but I did see the albino squirrel en route

Words 22. December 2007, 21:08

An albino squirrel trumps a wagtail in my book.

Adele 22. December 2007, 21:30

Maybe, especially when I've been looking for this one for weeks, but it's still annoying!
