A Big Christmas Tree

This is one of the most surprising trees in the area. It's four hundred years old and if you look closely, you'll see that it's growing apparently out of the pavement :eyes:

Of course, what actually happened is that they didn't want to cut the old cedar down when paving the sidewalk, which now curves neatly around the huge trunk. It's decorated by a local company. Not the easiest scene to capture on camera, but my original idea of photographing Sirius for this post (the brightest star seemed to tie in nicely with the Star of Bethlehem!) was abandoned due to the clouds :whistle:

Wishing a safe and peaceful Christmas for all! :smile:

Adele 24. December 2007, 22:16

Thanks Mark! :D Hmm, I've heard rumours that Santa will deliver that wild cat book I've been wanting for the last three months :wink: Of course, I'd really like a wild wolf pack to study and a spotted kitten to sit on my computer desk but, er...maybe another year :lol:

Fatimah 24. December 2007, 22:21

Hi again,

Nice tree and sorry it's growing out of the pavement,
I hope it won't be damaged

Merry Christmas

Fati

Adele 24. December 2007, 22:25

Hi Fati! :smile:

Well, it's been this way for at least the last 25 years and the tree is doing fine; the pavement is no worse than many others around here :whistle:

Have a great Christmas! :smile:

Stardancer 24. December 2007, 23:48

Merry Christmas, Adele!

:smile:

Darko 24. December 2007, 23:49

Jimmy Quek 25. December 2007, 00:49

The decoration of the tree is wonderful. Wishing you and your family a wonderful Holiday Season. Merry Christmas.

Eric 25. December 2007, 01:08

That's one great big old tree,

Merry Christmas Adele! :D

Fatimah 25. December 2007, 01:45

Great to hear the good news I would hate to see the tree
die due to the base .
thanks for the information.
Enjoy your Christmas

Adele 25. December 2007, 08:46

@Stardancer - merry Christmas! :D

Adele 25. December 2007, 08:55

@Darko - Yay yay yay!!! :hat: :hat: Santa came! :D

Merry Christmas! :cat: :smile:

Adele 25. December 2007, 08:56

@Jenny - well, I wouldn't climb it! :wink:

Merry Christmas! :D

Adele 25. December 2007, 08:56

@Jimmy - thanks! :D Same to you.

I think the tree looks nicer than the official lights put out by the town council!

Adele 25. December 2007, 08:57

@Eric - merry Christmas! :D

It must have the largest volume of any tree around here, considering its girth as well as its height. I'll have to get a picture of it in daylight...

Adele 25. December 2007, 08:58

@Fati - thankyou, and hope you enjoy your Christmas too :smile:

ALLY G. 25. December 2007, 10:26

Wow, the tree is interesting. I guess, it looks beautiful. It would be nice to see it by day. Maybe you could post a second photo, please.

A Merry Christmas to you and your family too, Adele. Have nice holidays. :heart:

Adele 25. December 2007, 10:56

Sure, I'll take a picture in daylight too - but the rain will have to stop first! :wait: :smile:

Merry Christmas; I hope you have a wonderful day :heart:

ALLY G. 25. December 2007, 10:59

Rain? Rain there in England? Sorry to hear that, Adele. That isn't the right weather for christmas. :frown:

Adele 25. December 2007, 11:04

It's ghastly outside :frown: Wall to wall Vancouver Island-style rain.

The forecast for tomorrow is better :smile:

Bitzy 25. December 2007, 14:03

<-- too is in hopes of seeing a daylight shot of that tree.

Adele 25. December 2007, 15:27

Okay, will do! :smile:

Merry Christmas! :smile:

Bitzy 25. December 2007, 15:49

Super! :up:

Thanks Rune! :D

Leonore 26. December 2007, 22:39

Hehe, another comment to add to the pile :lol: Happy holidays! :smile: I love the tree! Very mystical-looking. ^_^

Adele 26. December 2007, 22:50

:D

It's a great tree. I like it for other reasons too - when it was a sapling, England still had wild wolves!

Happy Christmas / New Year to you too :smile:

Keilarina 29. December 2007, 20:32

peace on earth in 2008...

to You and Your Family :smile:

Nicolas Borgsmidt 29. December 2007, 20:34

Fantastic! We have a tree in the middle of my street at home too. The asphalt goes around it. It´s beginning to crack. The Trunk is getting thicker every year:)
Happy New Year Adele:)

Adele 29. December 2007, 20:35

@Keilarina - thankyou! :D Same to you.

Adele 29. December 2007, 20:36

@Nic - indeed, there is no contest when it comes to a big tree vs. the pavement! Perhaps they figured that this tree wasn't going to grow much more when they built the pavement! I'll have to get a picture of it in daylight.

Happy New Year to you too :D

Nicolas Borgsmidt 29. December 2007, 20:40

Good idea..i´ll look forward to see that. Looked through my files and I didn´t even have a photo of the tree in the street. That´ll be the task of tomorrow:D

Adele 29. December 2007, 20:43

I'll forward to seeing it when it gets on your blog! :smile:

Nicolas Borgsmidt 29. December 2007, 21:21

I sleep a lot at the moment. Hope I get up before it gets dark:zzz::eyes:
