Familiar Trails

, , , ,

High summer is upon us at last. The meadows are hip-deep in wild grasses where the horses do not graze.

It's a few weeks since I've been down the old lane to look for the group I originally dubbed the "meadow foxes" (as opposed to, say, the non-garden fox I saw with the donkey the other day down a different trail); it's not easy with Kelly's illness as she finds walking on tarmac to be tiring. This evening, I took Leila out there. The grass was high enough to hide a deer, let alone a fox, and the magpies wisely positioned themselves on the fences.

But up on the high ridges I eventually spotted a rufus form smile

It's the busy season for bird activity, even if the number of species that can be easily observed doesn't compare to the winter. Pied wagtails are evidently raising their chicks in the farm buildings smile

But a swallow can relax for a little while before thinking of journeying back to the southern hemisphere.

Swallows... I see them a lot these days. So tiny, so fast smile

The last one, is a baby! so cute!

Last weekend I saw lots of them driking water in a swimming-pool! smile

And also lots of nests!

Beautiful Photos! I like the sun light. smile

Wonderful pictures. Looks as if you have a warm summer on the go, so far here we've had more fog and humidity than anything else. I'm not complaining since I find the summer heat difficult but my friends are not happy.

Adele BrandSittingFox Tuesday, July 1, 2008 8:04:29 PM

Thankyou very much everyone! happy

@Marie - the heatwave here is supposed to be breaking tomorrow but yes, it has mostly been sunny and occasionally fairly hot recently.

Words Tuesday, July 1, 2008 8:53:55 PM

The weather's been great hasn't it. I was surprised just how hot it got today (Tuesday), but perfect for long shots over the fields. Great shot of the wagtail, and the swallow up

CynthiaCynthia23 Tuesday, July 1, 2008 9:06:26 PM

What a beautiful day! smile Wonderful picture of the cute little swallow.

That Magpie, is he the same stunt-man from your previous post?
Lovely shots

Adele BrandSittingFox Thursday, July 3, 2008 8:13:28 PM

@Words - yes, and it has stayed pleasant in defiance of the forecast! There was some thunder up here this afternoon but it was rapidly replaced by a double rainbow. Summer is here, at last!

@Cynthia - thanks, it's nice to see swallows perched as it's so hard to photograph them on the wing! faint

@Sprogger - lol probably a cousin. I must admit, I was hoping he would balance on one leg or something but he was obviously having a day off wink

Lovely spot you live in. heart

Eliane a/k/a Ellymomable Saturday, July 5, 2008 4:17:08 AM

Best wishes for Kelly.

Eliane a/k/a Ellymomable Saturday, July 5, 2008 4:17:32 AM

Is it dangerous for someone to hike around your area without a dog?

Adele BrandSittingFox Saturday, July 5, 2008 6:34:56 AM

Thanks! smile Kelly's having her ups and downs but is doing fairly well, all things considered.

Dangerous...not especially, but I do tend to go deep into the countryside. And cell phone coverage here is poor. (I hate cell phones anyway.)

Eliane a/k/a Ellymomable Saturday, July 5, 2008 7:37:25 PM

I love my cell phone. It gives me a bit of peace knowing my children can reach me, and hopefully, if I need to reach someone...

I don't now much about dogs, but maybe one day I will get one, even a little one, like a mini hairy dachshund . I want one that won't eat me out of house and home lol

Could you do a post sometime on how one cares for a dog, puppy on up? I would really appreciate it. At your leisure, of course.

It would be so cool to have a pet hike with me since hubby can't with his breathing problems.

Adele BrandSittingFox Saturday, July 5, 2008 7:49:59 PM

LOL, we used to have a mastiff who was actually scared of food! It was quite an ordeal to get her to eat scared

Dogs are wonderful friends...and a lot of work! I might do a post about Kelly sometime smile But concerning care advice, you might like to have a look at the Kennel Club's advice pages. Or the RSPCA's dog care sheet which gives an overview. up

Eliane a/k/a Ellymomable Sunday, July 6, 2008 2:41:53 AM

Thanks much! How did you get the poor dog to eat?

Adele BrandSittingFox Sunday, July 6, 2008 7:12:53 AM

Usually by "advising" her that other dogs (namely, Kelly) would eat her food if she didn't! wink

Darkogdare Sunday, July 6, 2008 7:17:37 AM

rolleyes
I am wondering what language did you use for "advising" bigsmile

Adele BrandSittingFox Sunday, July 6, 2008 7:23:41 AM

Sign language.

1) Move Kelly within striking distance
2) Push foodbowl towards Kelly
3) Watch in hope for Esther to become worried at losing her food
4) Let Kelly hurriedly run off before a dog three times her weight
5) Esther might start to eat yes

Darkogdare Sunday, July 6, 2008 7:31:21 AM

lol faint

Jenny Jonesmountainlion_wales Sunday, July 6, 2008 4:11:29 PM

wow, is it just me or is there a size illusion on that fox pic there? he looks massive!!!

Adele BrandSittingFox Sunday, July 6, 2008 4:16:30 PM

Perhaps I should send this to the press as photographic evidence of a cougar on the loose, and see how long it takes them to work it out wink

He was a long way off but he didn't seem that big "in person". There's a big male fox coming to the garden now who's considerably taller (not the saddleback male, a new vagrant. He hangs around with the Chipped Vixen.)

Jenny Jonesmountainlion_wales Sunday, July 13, 2008 11:16:12 AM

lol, yeah! or maybe a rogue mained wolf?? hahaha bigsmile

Adele BrandSittingFox Sunday, July 13, 2008 12:49:47 PM

If I see a maned wolf roaming around the North Downs I will...be very surprised bigeyes

Jenny Jonesmountainlion_wales Sunday, July 13, 2008 3:41:17 PM

hahaha... likewise!!! ...but let me know if you do... bigsmile

Adele BrandSittingFox Sunday, July 13, 2008 4:14:07 PM

You shall be the first to know. wink

Jenny Jonesmountainlion_wales Sunday, July 13, 2008 7:03:49 PM

...excellent p hehehe.
