Familiar Trails

High summer is upon us at last. The meadows are hip-deep in wild grasses where the horses do not graze.
It's a few weeks since I've been down the old lane to look for the group I originally dubbed the "meadow foxes" (as opposed to, say, the non-garden fox I saw with the donkey the other day down a different trail); it's not easy with Kelly's illness as she finds walking on tarmac to be tiring. This evening, I took Leila out there. The grass was high enough to hide a deer, let alone a fox, and the magpies wisely positioned themselves on the fences.
But up on the high ridges I eventually spotted a rufus form
It's the busy season for bird activity, even if the number of species that can be easily observed doesn't compare to the winter. Pied wagtails are evidently raising their chicks in the farm buildings
But a swallow can relax for a little while before thinking of journeying back to the southern hemisphere.

Last weekend I saw lots of them driking water in a swimming-pool!
And also lots of nests!

@Marie - the heatwave here is supposed to be breaking tomorrow but yes, it has mostly been sunny and occasionally fairly hot recently.

@Cynthia - thanks, it's nice to see swallows perched as it's so hard to photograph them on the wing!
@Sprogger -

Dangerous...not especially, but I do tend to go deep into the countryside. And cell phone coverage here is poor. (I hate cell phones anyway.)

I don't now much about dogs, but maybe one day I will get one, even a little one, like a mini hairy dachshund . I want one that won't eat me out of house and home
Could you do a post sometime on how one cares for a dog, puppy on up? I would really appreciate it. At your leisure, of course.
It would be so cool to have a pet hike with me since hubby can't with his breathing problems.

Dogs are wonderful friends...and a lot of work! I might do a post about Kelly sometime

I am wondering what language did you use for "advising"
Adele BrandSittingFox # Sunday, July 6, 2008 7:23:41 AM
1) Move Kelly within striking distance
2) Push foodbowl towards Kelly
3) Watch in hope for Esther to become worried at losing her food
4) Let Kelly hurriedly run off before a dog three times her weight
5) Esther might start to eat

He was a long way off but he didn't seem that big "in person". There's a big male fox coming to the garden now who's considerably taller (not the saddleback male, a new vagrant. He hangs around with the Chipped Vixen.)
