The magpies may have called a temporary truce with at least one fox, but our largest local corvid has no such scruples. I know bullying when I see it :yikes:

The crow repeatedly divebombed this medium-sized fox as it trotted along the field edge. Quite why was unclear to me; crows nest in the topmost branches of high trees, well out of ridge of even the most adventurous fox, and it didn't seem to be protecting a food source. I'm sure it had its reasons; in any case, it somewhat perturbed the fox

Other local mammals seem more peaceful. Rabbit kits are exploring the world

And still others are up to their usual disappearing tricks! This scrape appears to be the work of a badger - the five claw lines and the breadth of the paw eliminate most other local creatures. Badgers themselves are always difficult to photograph, but at least they leave plenty of sign.

Cowslips are much easier to find

Spring is becoming summer. I wonder when I'll see my first fox cub of the year!

Love the rabbits! so cute!

Looks like springtime has arrived and is on it's way to summer

Words 5. May 2009, 23:17

Yes the rabbits are delightful, especially that first shot which is a gem. That fox looks really fed up with crow. Hope you see some cubs soon. I'm doubtful we'll get them in the garden here, but you never know.

Stardancer 6. May 2009, 00:06

The rabbits are so pretty. And the landscape--breathtaking.

Wonderful photos, Adele.

Jimmy Quek 6. May 2009, 00:31

The last photo is interesting. Hope to have opportunity to see more of the landscape, it is breathtaking indeed!

Eric 6. May 2009, 03:42

Adorable rabbits, I really like how the first rabbit is posing for you  My rabbits always tend to face the wrong way! I sometimes wonder if they're doing it on purpose

Darko 6. May 2009, 04:42

Those rabbits should be careful with so many foxes around :insane:
But they are cute, especially the young ones.
We don`t have foxes around but crows are bullying dogs in parks. I have seen one sitting on a branch dropping all sorts of things to a dog under the tree. If that dog ever has a secret wish, it was to have a wings :furious:

The Rabbits and the cowslip reminds me of the book "Watership down" by Richarsd Adams. A Wonderful book !

Magpies are crazy, like seaguls :left:

Adele 6. May 2009, 17:56

@Hermitess - yes, they're so sweet to see

Hard to believe that the longest day of the year is only next month! It feels like yesterday that we had a foot of snow on the ground!

Adele 6. May 2009, 17:58

@Words - I'm not sure what will be happening with my garden foxes either. It's looking increasingly probable that the fatality on the road a couple of weeks back was the Chipped Vixen :frown: The Sandy Dogfox is still coming, but what this means for the garden group, I don't know. She was the last member of the old guard who still visited us.

As for the crow - well, yes :insane:

Thanks

Adele 6. May 2009, 18:00

@Stardancer - thanks! Unimproved meadowland is getting quite rare in the UK and I'm always glad to see the wildflowers appear over that valley. I hope I find some different orchids this year!

Adele 6. May 2009, 18:01

@Jimmy - thankyou! It's very pleasant walking and photographing countryside

Adele 6. May 2009, 18:02

@Eric - Funny you should say that; I was thinking the same thing when I was trying to get a photo of another rabbit! I think they're taking advantage of their wide-angle vision to be pointing in the right direction for escape while keeping a look out (though I don't think they can see directly behind themselves!)

Thanks!

Adele 6. May 2009, 18:04

@Darko - Poor dog! :yikes: Crows are bandits :bandit: Is there anything too big for them to take on, I wonder? Heh, I wonder what would happen if they tried to bully a raven!

Adele 6. May 2009, 18:06

@Nic - yep, crazy and noisy with it! :sing: (Well, there isn't a smilie for a non-musical song! )

But they're fascinating to watch. My walks would be much duller without corvids. Like the foxes, I simply never know what I'm going to be seeing them doing!

ERWIN 6. May 2009, 18:58

Hoy Adele,

Very nice, thanks to let us walk white you..

Neil 6. May 2009, 21:28

Great photos of the rabbit kits - ive been keeping my eyes out for them with no luck so far. I looking out for fox cubs too, but no sign of foxy at all this week

Nicolas Borgsmidt 7. May 2009, 20:06

Nonsence Adele. You sound perfect :D

Steve 8. May 2009, 00:33

Adele,

Lovely pictures as always. By the way, what type of flowers are those in the last shot?

It finally stopped raining here after eight days of it. Finally some sun for more than five minutes.

Adele 8. May 2009, 19:59

@Erwin - thankyou! Thanks for enjoying the "walk"

Adele 8. May 2009, 20:00

@Neil - we seem to have a very secretive generation of foxes this year! :ninja:

Thanks! I haven't seen a huge number of rabbit kits myself.

Adele 8. May 2009, 20:01

@Nic - perhaps music is in the ear of the beholder after all

Adele 8. May 2009, 20:04

@Steve - eight days of rain?! Wow. Sounds almost like the BC coast...

The flowers are cowslips, a species of wild primrose native to meadowland. It's not doing that well nationally due to severe habitat destruction, but there's a good number over my local valley this year.

Thanks!

Nicolas Borgsmidt 8. May 2009, 21:33

Christine 14. May 2009, 14:29

Very nice to see your summery landscape. The rabbits are so adorable! The first one especially oozes sweetness  Good one of the crow and fox too.

Adele 17. May 2009, 07:09

Hi Christine, there is something wonderfully cute about baby rabbits! Thanks!

Cynthia 19. May 2009, 22:16

What a capture you show us with the crow and fox. The bunnies, oh so sweet bunnies, and now I know this yellow flower name growing everywhere around here this year. Thanks for all the great reading and smiling this evening.

Adele 20. May 2009, 05:45

Hi Cythnia, you have cowslips in your area too? They're quite rare in the UK (or at least, limited in their distribution).

The bunnies are cute indeed. I must look for more kits!

Thankyou very much
