The Slowest of Hunts

, , ,

Or at least, it ought to be, when the prey of choice is a slug (or possibly a snail relieved of its shell - it was a bit hard to tell at that range).

A pair of song thrushes have added our garden to their hunting circuit. They are hopping around quite speedily after their clumbersome prey. I noticed one repeatedly wiping its beak on the ground; whether it was cleaning itself of slime, or its future meal of dirt, I wasn't quite sure :right:

Only one other picture tonight - the latest addition to one of the local meadows :D

I have almost forgot when I saw a horse "in person" last time :smile:

Awww, look at the baby! :smile:

Great photos, Adele. Thanks for sharing.

@Darko - I see more horses than people when I'm out walking around here!

SittingFox 26. June 2009, 21:58

@Stardancer - thankyou! :smile:

The foal was bouncing along quite happily alongside its mother :smile: There is another older foal in that field too. Hopefully I'll catch them playing at some point!

Oh I could watch foals for hours. I think I have a little video somewhere of one being especially frisky. Love it when they kick up their heels. (do horses have heels?)

Cute foal and beautiful mother horse. I enjoy the photo. Thank you for sharing. You are lucky to have the foal and horse around you.

Beautiful photos as you always do Adele!! I've seen chickens wipe their beak like that, usually after a sticky meal of rice or spaghetti!

Flying Red Fox Blog 28. June 2009, 09:46

I love that little Foal so sweet! :heart: great shots.

SittingFox 28. June 2009, 15:59

San - me too! They're such good fun. I see adult horses playing too, sometimes, especially towards evening.

Heels...well, hocks I guess! :smile:

SittingFox 28. June 2009, 16:00

@Jimmy - thanks! :smile: The large number of horses is one of the best things about living in the Surrey Hills :smile: As long as they're not kept at very high densities and overgraze their paddocks, most of our wildlife is quite happy to have them as neighbours, too :smile:

SittingFox 28. June 2009, 16:01

@Erwin - thankyou! :smile:

SittingFox 28. June 2009, 16:03

@Lois - oh, that's interesting! Someone ought to design napkins for birds :lol:

Thankyou! :smile:

SittingFox 28. June 2009, 16:04

@Mark - isn't she cute! I hope she stays here for a while. I'll try to get more photos of her.

Thanks! :smile:

Nice shots! That wiping motion is something I've seen the pied wagtail adults do after feeding the young, so it may be simply a case of keeping the beak clean. Interesting to watch though.

SittingFox 29. June 2009, 21:37

Thanks Words! :smile: Interesting that you've seen the wagtails do it as well.

Ukwildlife 30. June 2009, 21:41

Nice stuff

SittingFox 30. June 2009, 21:56

Thanks! :smile:
