Hide and Seek

, , , ,

I seem to be looking for that last golden light of day, which catches falling seeds and leaves from trees...

...and signals the most active hours of most of our larger mammals.

The shadows are chasing after each other and the days are getting shorter :right: Yesterday evening was quiet, and I thought that Leila and I were alone in the meadows. But only for a moment

I've seen this large male fox several times before; he's considerably more heavily-built that either of our slim-line garden foxes, and is probably the father of the litter of five which I filmed in this meadow some months ago.

When night finally arrives, the trail cam takes over. I've been experimenting with leaving it in the wood opposite my house, really in the hope of capturing some of the deer. But so far I've only caught someone else  I'd know that limp and brush anywhere; it's the Tip Vixen, evidently on another part of her nightly circuit!

Things seem much livelier in the South Downs :jester: My brother-in-law took these photos of some "teenager" cubs last week. They are certainly full of mischief :bandit:

That lone fox in the meadow looks so content, just lying there in the grass.

Lovely post, Adele.

@Erwin - hope you're having a great trip! :D Have you seen any wild cats? I've never been to west Africa...

I'm glad it's getting back to the good time of year for foxwatching  Thanks!

Adele 11. September 2009, 20:01

@Star - he was very peaceful, and wasn't about to move for anyone! He was still there when I came back down the road about ten minutes later, but the light was even worse by then, so I didn't take any more photos.

Thanks!

San 11. September 2009, 23:32

So funny to see them playing like that!

Hermitess 11. September 2009, 23:49

Adorable photos of them playing! they look like they were having lots of fun. :D

Words 12. September 2009, 00:39

Trail cams are great for letting you know what is really going on. It seems to be the season for limping foxes. The young foxes are great too!

Darko 12. September 2009, 05:41

Where was your brother when he made these photos? Inside of a house I guess. Is it possible for them to be that playful in a presence of a humans?

The teen club pictures are adorable. They look so cute
The male fox is really majestic. He may have a personality problem, thinking he's a lion though :jester:

Adele 12. September 2009, 09:01

@San - foxes throw their whole energy into playing :jester:

Adele 12. September 2009, 09:06

@Lindsay - yes, they do and I'm sure they were :D

Adele 12. September 2009, 09:07

@Words - indeed, although this youngster seems to limp more than most. She ought to take better care of herself!

Adele 12. September 2009, 09:11

@Darko - I think he was inside, yes. A very tolerant litter of cubs who have grown up in a garden might play close to people, and I've filmed them playing over the meadows occasionally. They don't need much excuse to play, really :D

Adele 12. September 2009, 09:16

@Daxonmacs - foxes are so odd. One moment they behave like lions, and the next like a gang of baby monkeys! monkey

He is a fine-looking fox. I got some much better photos of him last June.

San 12. September 2009, 15:00

I keep going back to that picture of the two running. I love the expressions on their faces. Just like children.

Adele 12. September 2009, 15:15

School's out! We're free!

:D

(I'm just wondering what state the vixen in, with a brood like this :faint:)

Robin 12. September 2009, 16:56

Wonderful.
You certainly have a good eye, picking out that fox in the field!

Adele 12. September 2009, 17:25

I do look hard, but I do also believe that on this occasion I would have walked straight past him if he hadn't lifted his head! He was almost invisible from the lane.

Thanks!

studio41 14. September 2009, 04:02

love the fox nestled in the grasses

Denis 17. September 2009, 12:59

Adele 17. September 2009, 19:06

@Jill - he was very snug there

Thanks!

Adele 17. September 2009, 19:07
