Yikes! And I thought it cold (10C) here in Vancouver today.

Darko 11. October 2009, 05:54

So, usual autumn day in Saskatchewan :D

:ko:

San 11. October 2009, 06:04

I think Saskatchewan is the only province I've never visited. I know I passed through it on the train when I was 2 years old though.

Robin 11. October 2009, 06:16

A bit nippy! Glad you made it there safely.

Mark Jones 11. October 2009, 07:49

Yay a bit cold Adele lol P: I tracked your flight across the atlantic on flightaware.com hehe. Have a great time :D

Words 11. October 2009, 09:54

I guess there might just be a bit of a bite in the air then

Adele 11. October 2009, 11:51

@San - winter has come early to the prairies this year :eyes: Even the locals are complaining! I just checked the local forecast and it's -10.8c as I write.

I've only been to Saskatchewan once before, and that was a flying visit in spring. My main feeling so far - it gets much more interesting once you're off the TransCanada.

Adele 11. October 2009, 11:54

@Darko - hmm, it apparently isn't that typical, and it's even colder in Waterton (-24c). Still, maybe it'll concentrate the wildlife in the coulees (river valleys) and make my task of finding them easier (not that it's been hard to find them to date anyway!)

Adele 11. October 2009, 11:54

@Robin - thanks! Yes, certainly a little fresh :smurf:

Adele 11. October 2009, 11:56

@Mark - did you? I could have done without a long wait in Manchester. We didn't reach our hotel in Medicine Hat (Alberta) until 6am British time :faint: Twenty-one hours of travel, and then a seven hour drive from there.

Adele 11. October 2009, 11:58

@Words - well, I'm certainly appreciating my hat :smurf:

Hermitess 11. October 2009, 15:14

See! I told you to wear a hat! And take snacks. and something else but I forget now Homer: Doh!

This place is WAY too cold for me, going back to my blog where at least it's 3C/41F!!!

Mark Jones 11. October 2009, 15:23

Ah, unfortunatly that flight goes via Manchester, strange isnt it. Have a great time we want to see lots of interesting photos and video! :D

Cynthia 11. October 2009, 16:26

Exciting!! Enjoy ... looking forward to reading about your adventures. Your springtime visit reports were a happy sitting time for me, of course inside my warm abode.

Stay warm and have fun!!

Adele 11. October 2009, 22:08

@Lindsay - and a hat I did take! And gloves! And I'm eating Pringles while writing this :chef:

Well, it's cold for autumn but it does get to almost -50c here sometimes in winter, so all things are relative

Adele 11. October 2009, 22:09

@Mark - thanks! :D I nearly filled up my memory card on just this morning's photos, which absolutely never happens, so I'm not short on pictures! It might take me a while to process them though.

Adele 11. October 2009, 22:11

@Cynthia - thankyou! The wildlife has been first rate so far! :D If anyone had told me certain things in advance, I don't think I would have believed them. I've seen ten coyotes already today, and much more besides! :eyes:

Words 11. October 2009, 22:26

Oh wow, sounds like a very good trip indeed. Looking forward to the reports.

Adele 11. October 2009, 23:09

Thanks Words! :D I left the little motel this morning to the chorus of coyote song :sing: and the day just got better and better! I've added several new mammals to my life sighting list in the last 24 hours :eyes:

Stardancer 12. October 2009, 01:35

Wow. That's cold.

Brrrr....

:D

Adele 12. October 2009, 02:16

Yes, but I think England is going to feel overheated when I finally get home! :smurf:

ERWIN 12. October 2009, 08:46

Looks like a great trip

Adele 12. October 2009, 12:42

It's far exceeding expectations so far!

Just wait until the mercury drops off the bottom of the scale.

Adele 27. October 2009, 23:41

Hi Mickey, LOL, all things are relative, but I was quite amused to hear that Waterton Lakes (my other main place of interest in Canada) was the coldest place in North America the day I arrived in Calgary. It was -24c, and I don't think anyone really wants that at Thanksgiving

Aren't you from Saskatchewan? Or is my memory playing tricks on me?

Mick-E 28. October 2009, 00:58

One more reason to be thankful you're sitting down to a turkey dinner... instead of outside. :D

That's right, prairie born and raised. And survivor of 29 Saskatchewan winters.

Adele 28. October 2009, 19:08

But at least it's dry a lot of the time! I thought that England felt even colder when I returned home, although the temperature was above freezing!

I haven't been to the prairies in real winter yet (I've felt the chill in Edmonton in January, though). Maybe I should acclimatise my poor camera by leaving it in the freezer for a week first :D

Mick-E 28. October 2009, 21:04

I know what you mean. There's something about that damp chill.

I wouldn't recommend that for your camera. I don't know about the camera itself, but batteries really don't like the cold.

Mick-E 28. October 2009, 21:13

After some quick looking the popular advice seems to be to keep camera and batteries as warm as possible, inside a pocket or under your coat and only bring it out to shoot.

When you come inside, let the camera warm up to room temp. slowly and watch out for condensation.

Adele 28. October 2009, 21:13

Yeah, I was just joking. But handling the weather out there isn't easy photography-wise, summer or winter. I managed to break my last camera just north of Waterton while trying to clean dust off the sensor that had been whipped on there by an autumn windstorm. Added about £700 to the cost of the trip

Darko 28. October 2009, 21:20

:faint:

Adele 28. October 2009, 21:21

Hi Mickey, thanks for the advice  I posted at the same time you did, and missed that first time around!

I wonder how one keeps a 500mm lens warm...I might have to buy it its own coat!

Darko - this photography lark is hard on the bank balance!

Mick-E 28. October 2009, 22:18

700 Ouch.

No, that lens won't fit in your pocket will it?

Adele 28. October 2009, 23:08

Nope :frown: Not with modern coats, anyway. Perhaps I should just buy a traditional capôte!

Mick-E 29. October 2009, 00:12

Very stylish, I'd be tempted even without the need to protect a camera.

Adele 29. October 2009, 18:54

Maybe it can be next year's fashion trend
