It's always the same spot right

The Tip Vixen was there tonight, as most nights smile

There is something magnetic about this spot for all creatures vulpine. For generations, they've chosen to sleep zzz lurk ninja fight knight and cache pirate there. It's not a learned behaviour; wandering vagrant foxes have come into the garden and immediately settled in the spot. And I'm left watching in bemusement, wondering what it is that attracts them so.

I think it's a perfect triangle. To the left, a thick hedge runs down the border of garden, providing both protection from unwelcome eyes and a weather-break. Just behind the spot, there is a tall conifer, which helps conceal the foxes from the top of the garden. But the view is clear from there to the house, so they can look out across the lawn, safe but observant. Close by, also, is a gap in the wire fence that runs within the hedgerow, so it's got its escape hatch too smile

As I say, the Tip Vixen was there tonight smile

But that, of course, reminded me of all the other foxes who have used that spot over the years.

February 2006
Interloper (Admittedly, a metre or so from the Spot, but he always did things in his own fashion rolleyes)

May 2006
Takahe

July 2006
SV (Ms Madness herself!)

November 2007
Bandit

February 2008
One-Eyed Dogfox

The Old Dogfox, of course, used the spot too, but I cannot seem to find a good photo of him there sad So, just for completeness, here he is at the back of the garden smile

Just one other piece of news: the Silver Dogfox has thrown off his ear infection yes and I'm no longer attempting to capture him. He looks in fine shape, but is still much less frequent a visitor than his vixen.

Maybe "the spot" is being occupied by successive generations who smell traces of their moms and/or dads there, and choose to make it their spot, too, because it provides a sense of comfort and safety like they had when they were just little bitty foxes.

I'd like to think that, anyway.

Loved seeing the fox retrospective! They're such attractive animals. And it was interesting to me to see how different they looked from one another, so I can see how you've been able to identify and name specific foxes.

Darkogdare Saturday, November 21, 2009 6:19:23 AM

I am with Star on this, they all can probably smell "something". So they know it is a safe and nice place to have a rest up

RobinRobinL Saturday, November 21, 2009 7:10:10 AM

Great post. As above, I'm amazed that they are all so different from each other. I think I took for granted that they were all similar, but they definitely are not!

Darkogdare Saturday, November 21, 2009 7:20:47 AM

I guess we are all similar to them, too bigsmile

Adele BrandSittingFox Saturday, November 21, 2009 8:41:36 AM

@Cherrystone - thanks! smile I'm glad too. He could have been treated in a wildlife centre, but it would have been stressful for him to be captured. So, it's good that he's better!

Adele BrandSittingFox Saturday, November 21, 2009 8:42:17 AM

@Lynn - true, and I never yet met a fox who liked rain p

Adele BrandSittingFox Saturday, November 21, 2009 8:49:08 AM

@Star - it's possible; their sense of smell is certainly amazing. Regardless, it's certainly a place where they feel safe enough to sleep! zzz

Thanks! smile

Adele BrandSittingFox Saturday, November 21, 2009 8:51:29 AM

@Deb - we have occasionally had vixens coming that are so similar to each other that they could almost be clones (or at least twins!) but on the whole, foxes are very distinctive, both in their markings and in their faces. Which is good, because wildlife observation is most interesting when you get to know individuals smile

Thanks! smile

Adele BrandSittingFox Saturday, November 21, 2009 8:54:27 AM

@Darko - they know a good spot when they see one bigsmile

As for foxes thinking we're all alike - well, I think they probably do recognise people who they see frequently. I saw a documentary once on a wildlife film-maker who went to Chile to film a cougar. Obviously, as we well know, cougars are painfully shy whistle and it took him quite a while to persuade this cougar to let him film her. But it was only him who she trusted. A friend of his went looking for her, even wearing his clothes to disguise his scent, and she immediately fled.

Adele BrandSittingFox Saturday, November 21, 2009 8:58:31 AM

@Robin - and I didn't even get the infamous Scraggly Vixen in there! p

They all have strong personalities and it's great that they have different looks too smile Thanks! smile

Darkogdare Saturday, November 21, 2009 8:58:38 AM

Wow, it must be something more beside the scent that they recognise. Do they have monochromatic eyesight?

Adele BrandSittingFox Saturday, November 21, 2009 9:04:17 AM

They identify by sight as well as scent; I'll never forget Tara, one of our previous family dogs, going into a barking frenzy when she saw one of us wearing a mask! yikes scared

Eyesight...acuity is less than ours, but they're better at detecting movement. And they can see some colour (dogs more than cats, I believe). Remember my wolf-eye-view post?

Great post Adele

Adele BrandSittingFox Saturday, November 21, 2009 9:50:03 AM

@Darko - I ought to do more posts like that while it's rainy and I struggle with "normal" photo-posts idea

Adele BrandSittingFox Saturday, November 21, 2009 9:50:15 AM

@Erwin - thanks! smile

Shaunak DeShaunak Saturday, November 21, 2009 2:09:40 PM

Very good captures. Especially of the One-Eyed Dogfox.

Loiscakkleberrylane Saturday, November 21, 2009 2:58:50 PM

How interesting that they all enjoy that same spot! I too, enjoyed seeing all the past visitors to that place!

Mrs. HermitessHermitess Saturday, November 21, 2009 9:47:50 PM

It surprises me how different they all look. They are all so pretty! I saw a fox calender at Hastings last week and thought about you Adele. bigsmile I almost bought it to send to you but then I thought as much as you adore the foxes, you probably already have one. p

EricCedarFox Sunday, November 22, 2009 3:41:31 AM

Great post up I know all the foxes here except for Takahe, I guess she stopped visiting before I got here. smile

Adele BrandSittingFox Sunday, November 22, 2009 10:20:15 AM

@Shaunak - thanks! smile He was a lovely fox, even bigger than the Old Dogfox, and spent many evenings sleeping by the hedgerow.

Adele BrandSittingFox Sunday, November 22, 2009 10:20:40 AM

@Lois - at least it makes it handy for me when I'm setting up the trail cam bigsmile Thanks! smile

Adele BrandSittingFox Sunday, November 22, 2009 10:26:26 AM

@Lindsay - oh, thanks bigsmile That was a nice thought heart

I'm glad that they are all so different; makes my task to study them so much easier bigsmile

Adele BrandSittingFox Sunday, November 22, 2009 10:28:26 AM

@Eric - Takahe was the breeding vixen some years ago, but she was extremely nervous, hated the Fringe Vixen, and eventually abandoned the territory. She was really pretty though smile

I'm glad the Silver dogfox seems to have recovered. It would have been tricky to catch him. A lovely set of photos too. Nice to see the old faces again. They look so relaxed in that spot.

Adele BrandSittingFox Wednesday, November 25, 2009 7:34:00 PM

Yes, it would have been a tough job. Oddly, now that he's better he seems to have reverted to coming at sensible times again!

Thanks! smile I miss the old foxes, especially the SV. She was so amusing.
