Study in Cobalt

, , ,

It could be winter; it's been such a strange few weeks for weather that it's hard to be sure. The air is bitingly cold. The land's slippery with frost and ice feathers the fringes of the river and lake smurf But while donkeys huddle in their stable...

...the wild creatures must still hunt for food. Kingfishers are very active on the river - possibly a little too active from the point of view of a photographer scared and usually all that I see is that flash of cobalt-and-orange as they swoop across the water. Usually, but not always smile

This one perched opposite me, and was rather reminscient of a still-hunting owl or hawk as it studied the river for fish.

Kingfishers aren't the only hunters along the river, of course. Otters are present, somewhere, and of course there are grey herons, even if sometimes they give the impression that they're out of the water because it's simply too cold.

Meanwhile, gulls practice the flypast right

Certainly is - it's freezing! smurf But very beautiful with it, and it was great to see a kingfisher perched.

Thanks! smile

I believe you the photos are beautiful up

JamesSharkfinUK Wednesday, February 1, 2012 8:15:57 PM

I have never, in all my years, seen a photo of a kingfisher's head straight-on. I was taken aback at how small it was. Top marks.

Glad you got some shots of the kingfisher. They are such wonderful birds, but so small and fast. Herons are great cold weather birds... the grey blends so well with the light. And you even got a cormorant and (common?) gull!

What a beautiful blue color. Been watching some blackbirds in my backyard lately. There is a subtle blue/green hue roundabout their necks, depending on the light and the angle of view. Gives them a Mardi Gras-looking coloring, almost.

The weather here has been in the 70's (F.) off and on for the last few weeks. Odd for January and now February. But fun watching the birds and other wildlife enjoying the spring weather.

Fantastic series of photos! wizard After a few very warm days, I see their is frost on the grass this morning here.

Congrats on kingfisher, beautiful bird and photo up
San told me there is a big heron community on Stanley park in Vancouver, one of these days we will go to see them. It is warm and beautiful weather here, completely unusual for this time of year happy

Adele BrandSittingFox Friday, February 3, 2012 6:20:51 PM

@James - yes, they're rather odd birds when you see them in that profile! And their beaks are enormous.

Thanks! smile

Adele BrandSittingFox Friday, February 3, 2012 6:23:19 PM

@Words - I think you're right about the gull (I have to be honest - I hardly looked at it!) I've been admiring the kingfishers for a while but they're so hard to approach.

I don't think the herons approve of Norfolk's current climate. I saw one flying across a frozen field last night and it's bitterly cold today, with much worse forecast! right

Thanks! smile

Adele BrandSittingFox Friday, February 3, 2012 6:26:00 PM

@Star - I'll have to look for that in red-winged blackbirds next time I come across some smile

January was a mild month here but February seems to be making up for it. I wouldn't be too surprised to be using my snowboots in the next few days smurf

Thanks! smile

@Jill - thanks! smile Very pretty creatures.

Adele BrandSittingFox Friday, February 3, 2012 6:26:51 PM

@Robin - the donkeys seem to be quite stoical in the cold conditions!

Thanks! smile

Adele BrandSittingFox Friday, February 3, 2012 6:27:46 PM

@Deb - thanks! smile Interesting that your part of the world has suddenly remembered winter too! smurf

Adele BrandSittingFox Friday, February 3, 2012 6:29:14 PM

@Darko - I think I've heard of that colony up And, sunshine in Vancouver in winter; very good yes

I enjoyed watching the kingfisher. I guess they're keeping to the river at the moment; everything else is frozen.

Thanks! smile

7Wellis Tuesday, February 7, 2012 7:23:20 PM

I love the kingfisher! love

Adele BrandSittingFox Tuesday, February 7, 2012 8:51:03 PM

@Lois - thanks! smile I went down to the river for my lunch break today and saw another kingfisher, but it was too far away for a proper photo. I don't know how many pairs there are on the river, but it must be a fair number!

Adele BrandSittingFox Tuesday, February 7, 2012 8:51:46 PM

@7Wellis - me too! bigsmile They're such beautiful birds and I'm really enjoying watching them!
