Taking Breath

, , , , , , ,

The storm's coming. You can sense it; the sky was apricot at sunset and the birds are both active and erratic. The Met Office's warning system has turned an interesting colour over East Anglia and I wouldn't be too surprised to be using my snow boots tomorrow.

The county seems encased in ice.

The eighteen acre lake on the university grounds has almost entirely frozen over.

The river is still running, although it's gathered sheets of ice along its more sluggish reaches. And one of those was the foraging grounds for a surprising visitor today - a grey wagtail yes

Further upstream, two tiny birds attracted my attention. A pair of treecreepers! bigsmile One of them vanished in true treecreeper style, but the other foraged for insects in the bark.

Redwings are foraging too...

...with or without blackbirds as company!

But the dunnocks are singing sing

As are the chaffinches, between studying the world.

You are really a person who reflects on each photograph the reflection of his own soul, thanks!

Oooh, the clouds in the final shot look threatening. Great to see the treecreeper, wagtail and redwings (not seen any redwings locally this year, yet). Hope you're all prepared for the cold. I can imagine it gets quite bleak in Norfolk.

I'm viewing this on my phone, and my eyes are not the best anyway, but isn't one of these pics upside-down?

Edit: I knew it would be me. Tiny screen, bad eyes - the only thing I could pick out was the reflection!

Adele, lovely shots! Hope you don't get wintered too bad!
I was out at the Bird Sanctuary today. It was clear and sunny with the temperature up to 12 degrees! A perfect day. Now to sift through almost 500 shots!

The photo of the stick(?) in the frozen lake looks like there were bubbles all around it that were frozen as they rose to the surface. Very cool effect.

Great photos, Adele. Hope your weekend is a great one, even with snow!

Amusingly, at first I was unable to see the grey wagtail in the photo, and was wondering where the reflection was coming from. Camouflage: it's doing it... exceptionally well, actually.

Photos of the frozen lake are awesome too. And the fluffy birds are so cute.

Looks like much calmer and warmer weather but frozen lake is sobering. Stay warm. From what I can see all over Europe they have hard time fighting cold wave left

Jaridiokenes Monday, February 6, 2012 8:28:51 PM

Nice photos once again Adele. It doesnt seems to be so cold in U.K. Here in Finland last days has been really freezing, brrr...
Does the lakes get usually frozen in East Anglia wintertime ?

Beautiful photos, as always Adele. When I saw the wagtail, it looked at first like a duck, with the gray curved mass looking like the back of the head. Lovely shots of the tree creepers too - very difficult to get!

Adele BrandSittingFox Tuesday, February 7, 2012 8:34:45 PM

@Erwin - thanks! smile

Adele BrandSittingFox Tuesday, February 7, 2012 8:35:43 PM

@Thingsofme - thankyou, those are kind words! smile

Adele BrandSittingFox Tuesday, February 7, 2012 8:37:13 PM

@Words - yes, it certainly does. I haven't quite deployed all my Saskatchewan-grade clothing yet but at least I'm able to test my snowboots! right

I was pleased with the grey wagtail - first one I've seen on campus, and I saw a reed bunting this morning near the same bend of the river!

Thanks! smile

Adele BrandSittingFox Tuesday, February 7, 2012 8:38:42 PM

@James - well, it is quite amazing how much that wagtail blends into its backdrop! Fortunately they never stay still, or otherwise I think they'd be invisible!

Thanks! smile

Adele BrandSittingFox Tuesday, February 7, 2012 8:39:14 PM

@Robin - wow, I never get anywhere near that number, even when I'm photographing grizzlies! bigeyes

Thanks! smile

Adele BrandSittingFox Tuesday, February 7, 2012 8:40:58 PM

@Star - yes, pockets of air, I guess. I haven't seen that effect before.

Thanks! smile The weekend was fun for tracking wildlife in the snow. Hope you had a good weekend too!

Adele BrandSittingFox Tuesday, February 7, 2012 8:42:35 PM

@Felix - obviously it needs to choose a spot where the water isn't so still, if it does want to hide itself!

The lake is glistening with ice now. But I can imagine what things are like in your part of the world at the moment smurf

Thanks! smile

Adele BrandSittingFox Tuesday, February 7, 2012 8:45:42 PM

@Darko - yes, it sounds incredibly bad on the continent. It's nowhere near as cold here as it was last winter, but it's still below average for this time of year.

Thanks! smile

Adele BrandSittingFox Tuesday, February 7, 2012 8:48:00 PM

@Jari - it's the first time that I've personally seen the UEA Broad frozen over, but it must have done so for the last couple of years, considering the weather. Just from my experience, I would say that Surrey has more extreme temperatures, but Norfolk stays chilled for more of each winter!

Of course, cold in Finland is on a completely different level smurf

Thanks! smile

Adele BrandSittingFox Tuesday, February 7, 2012 8:49:13 PM

@Lois - thanks! smile Treecreepers are amongst our cutest birds but they climb so quickly that it's very hard to catch them with a camera! This one stayed in sight for much longer than usual.

DenisDenis-12 Thursday, February 16, 2012 8:07:54 AM

Perfect bird's gallery! I think, they feel spring coming soon...rolleyes

Adele BrandSittingFox Sunday, February 19, 2012 7:54:46 PM

Denis, spring is coming now, although it was quite cold again this morning (frost, but no icing of the river).

Thanks! smile

DenisDenis-12 Monday, February 20, 2012 5:11:57 AM

We still have -15 in Moscow... smurf smurf smurf faint

Adele BrandSittingFox Monday, February 20, 2012 7:55:25 AM

It's warmed up to -7c in Saskatchewan! (Of which I'm glad, since I'm flying over there in less than a month!)

DenisDenis-12 Monday, February 20, 2012 7:58:28 AM

And I have no opportunity for wildlife visit this spring... In the end of March we have to provide TV live translation from the biathlon championship (same stadium in Tumen)... maybe later... awww awww awww cry
