Frigid

, , , , ,

It is cold smurf

The combination of clear skies and an area of high pressure that is directing Siberian winds Europe-wards has put a decided bite in the air. It was -14c / 6.8f when I ventured outside this morning smurf When I opened the curtains just after dawn, the hedgerow at the back of my garden was glossed over with that ghost-smoke grey which signals heavy hoarfrost, the kind of ornamentation that you only see when the mercury plunges well below zero.

But, the morning was beautiful smile

Even flowers are growing - well, flowers of frost, with aquatic plants given a false softness by their frigid rims.

The Broad is still capped with ice.

And the Yare has frozen over as well in much of its meandering course across campus.

These are tough conditions for wetland wildlife and I didn't see much this morning; just the odd cormorant flying overhead, and the gulls wandering on the ice, and a rabbit huddled under a trailer.

Last night, the ponies were playing tag in the snow smile

But while Norfolk continues its interpretation of the Pleistocene, foxes are busy exploring the North Downs smile A few photos from my mother, down in Surrey:

@Erwin - thanks! smile Yes, it is most definitely winter smurf

Adele BrandSittingFox Saturday, February 11, 2012 2:05:51 PM

@Marilyn - those fox photos were taken by my mother in the North Downs (I'm currently living in Norfolk, where I'm studying for my MSc). I'm not sure what kind of camera she uses, but it's definitely different from mine!

It's a lovely fox, isn't it? BTW, it seems to "broadcast" femininity ... does anyone have any data?
And the landscape/details are superb!

Seconded. Actually, all the animal photos are lovely. And I like the flowers on the ice, too.

Canada was supposed to have the worst winter "ever", but now it's becoming one of the mildest. We had one week of cold weather but nothing like Europe. I have to laugh at people who were teasing Darko about the frigid Canadian winters.

RobinRobinL Saturday, February 11, 2012 5:33:44 PM

Adele, wonderful shots! Winter paints a nice picture. Too bad she's so brutal.
Our weather is very spring like. 7 degrees right now, and we've had high of 10 to 13 all week.
Just got back from our morning constitutional. The Pussy Willows are out!
I'm posting a shot of newest addition today! Have a look!

Mrs. HermitessHermitess Saturday, February 11, 2012 6:09:05 PM

Haha the ponies are cute!

The first fox pic is so good, looks like he just posed for her wink

Crisp and frosty pics Adele up

Great set of frost images. That is exceptionally cold weather you're encountering. Love the foxes too, and I even see that the magpies are getting in on the act.

Uncle MickMickeyjoe-Irl Saturday, February 11, 2012 11:22:31 PM

Sorry, but grateful that England is blocking the worst of this reaching Ireland. Hope you are not finding it too hard.

DenisDenis-12 Monday, February 13, 2012 1:41:13 PM

Nice post! Foxes are perfect, as usual in Your photos. up And this "frost talks" are still actual for all Europe... I will post some shots of outdoor work at LOW temperature.

Some beautiful winter photos, Adele.

We had our first dusting of snow this morning, but it's already disappeared in rain.

Stay warm.

smile

I hate to brag, but we opened the windows today.

Sansanshan Tuesday, February 14, 2012 3:28:16 AM

Oh, did I mention I live in Canada....

Adele BrandSittingFox Tuesday, February 21, 2012 10:55:17 AM

@DW - it's a very pretty little fox, quite young I think. It's already learned not to like magpies, though whistle

Thanks! smile

Adele BrandSittingFox Tuesday, February 21, 2012 10:55:43 AM

@Felix - thanks! smile It was a very enjoyable walk.

Adele BrandSittingFox Tuesday, February 21, 2012 10:59:35 AM

@San - yes, it has been a strange one. It was mild for us too until that bitterly cold weekend, and now it's forecast to be +18c later in the week. It's very pleasant today. Having said that, Saskatchewan (as ever) is still somewhat frigid. I hope it's warmed up a bit before I head over there next month!

Adele BrandSittingFox Tuesday, February 21, 2012 11:00:38 AM

@Robin - hope Spencer is settling in well bigsmile

I think the UK is heading towards spring now. Me, I'm heading back into Saskatchewanian-style chill smurf

Thanks! smile

Adele BrandSittingFox Tuesday, February 21, 2012 11:01:06 AM

@Lindsay - they all pose under that bush!

Thanks! smile

Adele BrandSittingFox Tuesday, February 21, 2012 11:01:40 AM

@Nic - thanks! smile

Adele BrandSittingFox Tuesday, February 21, 2012 11:03:01 AM

@Words - well, it was cold enough up here, but I read in the national press that an unofficial record in the North Downs that weekend was logged at -18.4c. Surrey always seems to want the final word of winter smurf faint

Thanks! smile

Adele BrandSittingFox Tuesday, February 21, 2012 11:05:33 AM

@Mick - don't mention it, glad to help whistle

Actually, it didn't cause much disruption in East Anglia, although I suspect there were the usual issues with the trains in the southeast. Glad I'm not commuting to London anymore! right

Adele BrandSittingFox Tuesday, February 21, 2012 11:07:06 AM

@Denis - I guess they have no choice but work outdoors at excessively low temperatures in Tumen, or they'd have a very short working season! smurf

But it feels much milder here now.

Thanks! smile

Adele BrandSittingFox Tuesday, February 21, 2012 11:07:45 AM

@Star - I don't think we'll have any more snow now until next winter, but you can never be totally sure!

Thanks! smile

DenisDenis-12 Tuesday, February 21, 2012 1:20:07 PM

devil Yes!

The weather has been whacky here, too.

I loved that top photo of the fox. up

Adele BrandSittingFox Sunday, March 11, 2012 10:13:43 AM

@Mick - lol Really, -10c is summer...isn't it? right

Adele BrandSittingFox Sunday, March 11, 2012 10:13:52 AM

@Jenny - thanks! smile

Adele BrandSittingFox Sunday, March 11, 2012 10:14:32 AM

@Deb - it seems to have sorted itself out here, now that I'm leaving for a colder climate! whistle

Uncle MickMickeyjoe-Irl Sunday, March 11, 2012 2:22:37 PM

After -37 you take what you can get. bigsmile
