Orion Rising

, ,

sing

The moon called me home again just this side of crazy And pulled the tides in lee I walked home in the full moonlight Late November's starry night A touch of lunacy For the first time in a long time I could see A silver beam of light...

Late November

Clear skies have been rare treasures in this autumn of rain and grey cloud and high wind. But the last two nights have given patches of respite, moments when I remember why I so love the skies at this time of year bigsmile

Jupiter is still very visible; Mars is rising much later. But the moon is bright even through the haze, and throwing shadows behind me as I walk among the leafless trees in the deepening chill. The large crater in the middle of this photo is Copernicus, named after the 15th century cleric who argued that the Earth revolved around the sun.

The consequences of the Earth's daily spin, as opposed to its annual orbit, can be seen with a little patience smile The shots in this sequence were taken about ten minutes apart.

Orion might be the most spectacular constellation...

...but there is plenty else to see. The Pleiades are high over the horizon by the time Orion is fully visible right

Here's hoping for some more clear nights! wait

Wow, great shots! I love taking shots of the moon. Yours are better!
There was a bright light in the sky over here today too.

Wow thats excellent well done! yes Its good you caught that, the South had storms so i missed out on the Moon.

Darkogdare Friday, November 27, 2009 5:38:48 AM

I live in a town so clear nights like this are rare. Even though when there are no clouds, only Moon and brighter stars and planets are visible - the rest are hidden because of dust, lights and smoke.
Excellent photos up

Wonderful shots of the moon! up I tried making a detailed panorama of the sky last month, but photoshop or canon photostitch just didn't want to stitch all 102 photos together lol

Thanks! smile

Adele BrandSittingFox Sunday, November 29, 2009 10:24:55 AM

@Freya - thanks! smile I've been wanting to do the star progression for a while but have struggled to find a sufficient cloud-free spell scared

Adele BrandSittingFox Sunday, November 29, 2009 10:26:07 AM

@Lindsay - er, I know a bit about the stars and the wild living things but don't quiz me on my knowledge of soap operas or football lol

My camera is a good one, but the lens isn't top of the range. Still, it's fun to play with bigsmile Thanks! smile

Adele BrandSittingFox Sunday, November 29, 2009 10:27:07 AM

@Shaunak - thanks! smile Orion probably looks a bit more lopsided in your part of the world - we see him from a different angle up here!

Adele BrandSittingFox Sunday, November 29, 2009 10:28:56 AM

@Mark - LOL, I've been dodging the clouds for days up here scared I want a cold frosty winter, not all this rain! Oh well, I have to work with the weather, not grumble about it wink

Thanks! smile

Adele BrandSittingFox Sunday, November 29, 2009 10:32:04 AM

@Darko - the skies are relatively clear here (I can see the Milky Way in summer) but we do get a orange blur on the northern horizon from London, and it's altogether not as sharp as the jewelled skies that you see in the Canadian wilderness.

Thanks! smile

Adele BrandSittingFox Sunday, November 29, 2009 10:32:44 AM

@Norfrid - thanks! smile I love the night sky bigsmile

Adele BrandSittingFox Sunday, November 29, 2009 10:33:25 AM

@Lois - thanks! smile I'm always glad to see Orion, and then Canis Major as winter progresses star smile

Adele BrandSittingFox Sunday, November 29, 2009 10:35:22 AM

@Nic - LOL, first time that I've ever had that comment on a post bigeyes lol

Thanks! smile

Adele BrandSittingFox Sunday, November 29, 2009 10:36:30 AM

@Cherrystone - thanks! smile

It's one of my favourite hobbies smile I'm going to get a telescope when I can afford it.

Adele BrandSittingFox Sunday, November 29, 2009 10:37:42 AM

@Eric - good grief, 102 photos?? scared I hope that didn't crash your computer bigeyes Maybe you could stitch it together in sections and then stitch those into the whole confused

Thanks! smile

Adele BrandSittingFox Sunday, November 29, 2009 10:39:15 AM

@Neil - I put the ISO up to 800 or so, focus the camera on a distant point and then switch it to manual, and the shutter speed was 3.2 seconds. (However, more is often better.) I then put the camera on a sturdy tripod and fired it with a remote shutter!

Thanks! smile

Adele BrandSittingFox Sunday, November 29, 2009 10:39:56 AM

@Words - thanks! smile It was fun to do.

Adele BrandSittingFox Sunday, November 29, 2009 10:43:08 AM
