Rain-Ghost

, ,

It's dark on these pseudo-winter days when the rain keeps falling and the clouds linger thick, and one storm trails another, until the sky looks up at me through the grass that grows like iris amidst the broad puddles, and the ring of a hiking boot on tarmac has faded into the silence of sodden leaves and pine needles and mud.

The wind is hassling in from the west, freeing dead leaves from the beechwood's boughs, occasionally blowing the sky shockingly clear, only for clouds to follow again.

Like me, the wild animals are waiting for the weather to ease; also like me, they have to continue with their lives in the meantime and simply manage as best they might.

But I saw something...something like a smudge of clean chalk against the unbroken blackboard bigeyes

Maybe the albino is more of an equal now; albinism is associated with poor eyesight, but no animal which relies on its eyes has an easy time in such days. It was with three or four "normal" grey squirrels, scrabbling around in the wet mishmash of mud and grass and leaves.

It is glaringly visible now, but come the snow... ninja

The clouds are changing again right

Nice post! You weather is exactly mirroring ours. It has been quite miserable, wet and windy, here for the past two weeks. Definitely a coastal November. Even my little local flock at the feeder has become scarce.

What a dreary day! A good day to be at home with a cozy blanket and a book. bigsmile

Great post!

Darkogdare Sunday, November 22, 2009 6:50:37 PM

That albino squirrel would use our fog perfectly up It would be only eyes visible out of layers of white bigeyes

bigsmile

Deb Plattdebplatt Sunday, November 22, 2009 9:25:33 PM

I was actually really excited to see an albino squirrel, and I'm only seeing it through your photos! It's just that I never saw one before.

Loved the sketch, too. up

It's the first time that I see a photo of an albino squirrel too. In the Norwegian forests there is an albino elk walking around, and the hunters seem to agree that they will not shoot that one. They call him "Albin".

Oh nice spot on a grey day! There's always something lurking out there, but the squirrel is a special. I like the drawing too. It has a real sense of night prowling.

What a wonderful treat - to see an albino squirrel!

Adele BrandSittingFox Monday, November 23, 2009 12:21:22 PM

@Robin - it's even rainier today yuck I miss the snows and sharp blue sky of last winter cry

I'm seeing quite a few birds, but it's hard to photograph them when the light is so bad.

Thanks! smile

Adele BrandSittingFox Monday, November 23, 2009 12:22:02 PM

@Lindsay - maybe, but I miss my walks and so does Leila, so we have to go out anyway! smile

Thanks! smile

Adele BrandSittingFox Monday, November 23, 2009 12:22:58 PM

@Nic - yes, and the locals never found out why p although, I suspect some did guess! sherlock

Thanks! Just messing about with charcoal... smile

Adele BrandSittingFox Monday, November 23, 2009 12:24:31 PM

@Darko - that would be...disturbing bigeyes

I would like to know how it stays white! Leila came home with legs as dark as those of a Newfoundland right

Adele BrandSittingFox Monday, November 23, 2009 12:25:34 PM

@Erwin - yes, it's not the best right now. But I just have to see what I can find in spite of that.

This squirrel is smaller than the one that I photographed last year. Probably related though; we get one or two in that area most years smile Thanks! smile

Adele BrandSittingFox Monday, November 23, 2009 12:28:05 PM

@Deb - thanks! smile They're beautiful little creatures. I was interested in the contrast between the white squirrel and its dark surroundings, but you can see some better photos of an albino here.

Adele BrandSittingFox Monday, November 23, 2009 12:29:42 PM

@Norfid - oh, I'd love to see an albino moose / elk! bigsmile I'll have to watch that video later (I'm at work at present!)

Thanks! smile

Adele BrandSittingFox Monday, November 23, 2009 12:31:04 PM

@Words - yes, I was delighted to see it and it (almost) made up for the appalling light conditions! Here's hoping that the sun comes back soon... wait

I might go back to that sketch and do it in a bit more detail. I just wanted something which indicated the weather's mood.

Thanks! smile

Adele BrandSittingFox Monday, November 23, 2009 12:31:40 PM

@Lois - thanks! smile It looked impossibly white against all the mud and wet trees!

RuneSB Monday, November 23, 2009 9:42:14 PM

Beautifull little animal smile Great photos (as allways up )

Mark JonesFlying Red Fox Blog Monday, November 23, 2009 9:54:24 PM

Interesting sketch, nice tree and cute white squirrel.

EricCedarFox Tuesday, November 24, 2009 6:00:42 AM

Albino squirrels are so interesting. I think I like them so much because they're completely opposite of our black "gray" squirrels.

studio41 Tuesday, November 24, 2009 8:04:56 AM

like the sketches you make, and this yet another! wonderful job... always a nice post.

Adele BrandSittingFox Wednesday, November 25, 2009 7:29:23 PM

@Rune - thanks! smile This weather is making photography very hard scared

Adele BrandSittingFox Wednesday, November 25, 2009 7:30:05 PM

@Mark - hasn't it just! I think we've had more rain in the last month than in the last six months! Oh well, it cannot last forever... wait

Thanks! smile

Adele BrandSittingFox Wednesday, November 25, 2009 7:30:22 PM

@Star - thankyou! smile

Adele BrandSittingFox Wednesday, November 25, 2009 7:30:58 PM

@Jimmy - thanks! smile

The squirrel is very pretty smile

Adele BrandSittingFox Wednesday, November 25, 2009 7:32:13 PM

@Eric - and I think I stare at the black squirrels when I go to Toronto for much the same reason! Though, albinos are rare in the UK. They're more common in Surrey than nationally for reasons that haven't really been explained yet. We have one or two around the village each year.

Thanks! smile

Adele BrandSittingFox Wednesday, November 25, 2009 7:32:42 PM

@Jill - thanks! smile Tough to blog in these conditions scared

sean brechinkhaoist Thursday, November 26, 2009 2:02:58 PM

Wow, cool squirrel. Nearest thing we get to that around me is the albino cory in the fish tank.... Not as cool as your squirrel though.

Adele BrandSittingFox Thursday, November 26, 2009 10:54:21 PM

Hi Sean, it's always cool to see the albinos. My grandfather saw an albino red squirrel here some 75 years ago, so there must be something about the landscape that produces unusual colour morphs!

Thanks! smile

sean brechinkhaoist Thursday, November 26, 2009 11:17:40 PM

That's interesting.... I guess you could get an albino anything.... An albino hedgehog would be pretty cool.

I really like the idea of the albino squirrel being a ninja in the snow. They can be very ninja like anyway.

NeilUkwildlife Saturday, November 28, 2009 7:59:08 PM

great photos, especially the albino squirrel. It eyes are red aren't they? I've only seen leucistic rather than true albinos before.

Adele BrandSittingFox Sunday, November 29, 2009 10:55:55 PM

@Sean - LOL, it would indeed! Or an albino porcupine!

Adele BrandSittingFox Sunday, November 29, 2009 10:56:50 PM

@Neil - yes, this is a full albino with pink eyes. I've only ever seen albinos here. I've never seen a leucistic squirrel.

Thanks! smile
