Avian Surprises

, , , , ,

When the leaves are thick on the trees and the grass is tall enough to hide a roe deer, locating wildlife can be slightly tricky. Some days, I feel almost like I'm back in the temperate rainforests of Canada, attempting to locate things that are very good at not showing themselves. Sometimes it's just easier to wait for birds to come and perch on the balcony railings instead!

And at least there's one bird family I can always count on to be on display  Here's a corvid quartet.

Jay

Jackdaw

Carrion Crow

Magpie

Finding four corvids in a morning is quite cool  but pretty much everything else in the way of birdlife seemed elusive. But never say never...

I was close to home and expecting no more pictures when a mewing buzzard-like call suddenly caught my attention. High up, high, high, high up, almost over my back garden in fact, two stream-lined raptors were wheeling and diving like outsized swifts :eyes:

Hobbies!! I was shocked! :faint: A new species for my local list - and a raptor, which is always special; actually I've never seen a hobby anywhere before. They were so far above me and moving so quickly that photography was, er, difficult :insane: but I got a few rough pictures by using manual focus. Words got a better picture of a hobby about a fortnight ago.

It seems too much to hope that this beautiful and uncommon falcon is actually nesting locally. I will certainly keep a close watch out for this pair, though.

I just never know what I will see when I step outside the front door :D

Cheers!

Notwithstanding Words' sighting, I was very startled to see these hobbies. I just hope they hang around for a bit! I'd like to get a better picture of one.

Fab that you saw the hobbies. The description of swooping like out-sized swifts is spot on. When I got my shot I'd half assumed I was looking at swifts until I realized the tail wasn't forked (and it was a tad larger), but the movement is very similar.

Jays are still hellishly elusive for me!

Hobbies really are beautiful birds. Their call was nicely eerie too! I wonder what the local sparrowhawk pair think of their new neighbours!

Concerning corvids, I want to know why I see so few rooks!

Thanks, I was keen to make the most of the sunshine this morning but certainly didn't expect hobbies, even ones that high up! I see sparrowhawks and kestrels flying over the garden fairly often but this was a bit special.

Adele, odd that rooks are so scarce where you are. And on the subject of hobbies, I saw a pair today at a distance. I grabbed a couple fo shots 'for the record' but they are more like black smudges. That's three sightings I've had in the past few weeks, all at different locations locally.

@Elly - thanks! Jays are certainly inquisitive, but they are much shyer than their relatives. This one was in the garden early in the morning.

@Words - that's interesting. I wonder if we've had a bumper number of hobbies migrate up here to the UK this year?

I thought I caught another glimpse of the hobbies here yesterday, but they were too far away and moving too fast to be sure.

@Lois - thanks! I try to keep my lists updated! I have others for my local flowers and mammals and other things like butterflies.

@Eric - thankyou! These goldfinches are very pretty, quite different to your local goldfinches though!

@Shinjitsu - thankyou for the birthday wishes for Kelly! I have to say, she has been very tired...I cannot walk her much at the moment.

The mice were a nice surprise

Thanks, appreciated. But "better" is pretty relative right now :frown:
