Closer to Home

, ,

It seems quite a while since I've written a post on the wild foxes who visit the garden. In truth they haven't been particularly active this week, but I did catch a soaking wet Old Dogfox yesterday evening

The most intriguing action is taking place well after dusk, which makes life remarkably difficult for me as a photographer - getting shots of fast-moving foxes at 30+ ft at high zoom without flash is never going to be fun after the sun has set :insane: However...

The Chipped Vixen is still a regular visitor, and curiously she is often not alone. Her frequent companion is a tall, long-eared male fox who has a wide-eyed expression similar to her own. He has been on my blog before - he was the one fighting with the Old Dogfox in the noisy cub video - but to date I've never got a still photo of him. I nearly did yesterday. He was sitting quite cooperatively on the mound, but I took too long to get the camera set up :o:

I haven't given him a name as most of these young males don't tend to stay in the territory very long. Perhaps I'll reconsider though, if I can think of something fitting for him.

In the meantime, here's the hard-won photo of the Chipped Vixen. I get pictures of her so rarely that I think almost any quality is worth uploading on here :faint:

__

And on a totally different topic, the pond gave me a nice surprise yesterday  Something (or to be exact, a pair of somethings) were apparently clinging to an iris stem! :eyes:

This is the empty shell of a dragonfly nymph that has climbed up out of the water and hatched into an adult. I had no idea that there were nymphs in the pond at all (though its dark depths remain something of a mystery :sherlock:) and where the newly-hatched adults have gone, I do not know. I would love to see them back here!

All Spaced Out...But Kept the Memory

Dragonfly (Dytiscus ?) larva is one terrible beast, it can attack even small fishes sometimes, and bite your finger painfully if you are not carefull...
Nice old dogfox portraits again, must be the most famous fox of the England !

:D

Yes, I have heard that they can be quite effective predators! I don't know which species of dragonfly this is, but the nymph was at least two inches long.

The Old Dogfox is happily unaware of his celebrity status :D

The dragonfly nymph is one of of the hawkers, possibly and emperor dragonfly. Nice photos

Ah, that face--that gorgeous, expressive face!

@Neil - seeing an emperor would certainly make my day! I see few dragonflies here at all, being in such a dry region. Cheers, thanks for the hawker id

@Stardancer - he says a lot without actually saying anything at all  He's a wonderful old fox.

I have to say I have quite a soft-spot (albeit electronic!) for your ODF! And the chipped vixen even managed a pose!! Aren't foxes such photogenic creatures? - well, the ones who stay around long enough, that is! p:

Very nice photos!! I think the chipped vixen is my favorite of all your foxes. She has the sweetest look on her face. She always looks as if she has just asked a very polite question, like, "Do I look all right for your photo?"

Great pictures of the foxes!

Your zoom work very well, image is clear, do you use a tripod?

By pabha, # 19. July 2008, 00:58:12

@Vulpes - well, the Old Dogfox is a bit special. He has a local fanclub too! :D

Foxes are perfect for the camera but I do wish that after dark they could just stay still :faint: Most of them would exit very promptly if I used the flash.

By SittingFox, # 19. July 2008, 07:34:46

@Lois - I've got a soft spot for the Chipped Vixen too, even though she gives me photography headaches! She's so quiet and refined compared to our other vixens! I'm actually rewriting my "fox biography" pages on my site at the moment, giving summaries of the regular foxes on here.

@Cynthia - thankyou! Some were easier than others!

By SittingFox, # 19. July 2008, 07:57:25

@Jimmy - thankyou! I use a tripod for nighttime shots, and also a remote shutter so I don't knock the camera when I fire it. The Old Dogfox pictures were handheld.

Ah, but if they stayed still, where would be the challenge in that?! p:

By Vulpes vulpes, # 19. July 2008, 10:29:47

Indeed. It would like, I don't know, a bold cougar! No challenge at all p:

Love the first shot! And great that you have dragonflies hatching, particularly if they are emperors! I've seen very few this year apart from the chasers at work.

Beautiful photos of the old fox.
And congrats to the dragonflies.
It seems here they are quite rarely this year (I don't know the reason for that).
A wonderful weekend to you!

By ALLY_G, # 19. July 2008, 15:40:52

@Words - thanks! I was quite pleased with that one.

The dragonflies were a big surprise. I'm going to have to keep more of a watch on the pond in future!

@Elke - it's very cool to see the dragonfly nymphs...potentially they might have been developing in the pond for years! I agree, this hasn't been a good year for dragonflies :right: I don't know why either but no one seems to be seeing many.

Have a great weekend too!

Adele, ponds are fascinating (especially at night) when the amphibians get active. The nymphs can take two years to develop so they've done well. I have toa gree about a general lack this year though. I'm yet to see the darters that were everywhere last summer.

By Words, # 19. July 2008, 20:54:42

Talking of amphibians, we still have legless tadpoles in the pond! :eyes: I did find some froglets in a meadow the other day.

I've come to appreciate insects much more from school and such; there's so many neat species of them. (But I'm still getting over my fear of actually touching them. :faint:)

I do find insects amazing, although horseflies make me want to cry

By SittingFox, # 20. July 2008, 08:38:59

cool

..oh yeah, u know we saw that male broad-bodied chaser there... i've since seen a female one here, while i was out saving slow worms! lol. unfortunately i didn't have my camera with me and had to use the rubbishy one on my phone - it just looks like a blob!! oh dear...

Does the dogfox have any idea that you take so many photos of him? Does he care? Does he pose? Does he just look at you like you are a nut?

Very nice pics, the Foxes dont seem to mind being soaking wet lol! P:

On a side note, sorry to hear about Kelly Adele, hope you are feeling ok, i know its hard to lose such a well loved pet. *hug* HUGS

@Jen - could you email me the picture anyway please? I still haven't got a picture of an adult dragonfly this year, though at least the new battery isn't likely to give out on me like the old one

@Elly - he doesn't really seem too bothered by my presence whatever I get up to. He's grown used to the camera but the flash scares some of the other foxes.

By SittingFox, # 22. July 2008, 18:26:49

@Mark - thankyou, and thanks also for your message (also thanks to everyone else who has PM'd me - I really appreciate all your kind thoughts).

This is very, very hard but I was very privileged to have her for so long and I have many wonderful memories of her...but it's awful to lose such a friend, no two ways about it.

Adele, I'm so sorry for the loss of your beloved Kelly. My thoughts and prayers are with you.

Thankyou, that's very kind of you. This is a tough time for me.

She suddenly went downhill on Saturday and died quite peacefully on Sunday afternoon.
