Sunshine, at last.

, ,

:D hi

Yippee! We have some warmth and sunshine, at last, and a squadron of bees are feeding on the lavender, the butterflies are posing on the opened flowers, and the greenhouse is warming up again.

I am busy hand-etching my design on a large wall mirror for a gift and so I am working to a time scale here. The design is extensive and the work is delicate. One slip and the whole effect would be ruined and every moment I am expecting the mirror to crack! [:yikes:]. In the meantime I am trying to figure out how to photograph a mirror, to show the finished work, using only a 1.3 megapixel camera, without being seen in the reflection.

To Those Of Us Who Are On A 'Permanent Diet'.

,

:D hi

Subject: for all those of us on a permanent diet!

In the beginning God covered the earth with broccoli, cauliflower and spinach, with green, yellow and red vegetables of all kinds so Man and Woman would live long and healthy lives.

Then using God's bountiful gifts, Satan created Dairy Ice Cream and Magnums. And Satan said, 'You want hot fudge with that? And Man said, 'Yes!' And Woman said, 'I'll have one too with chocolate chips'. And so they gained 10 pounds.

And God created the healthy yoghurt that woman might keep the figure that man found so fair.

And Satan brought forth white flour from the wheat and sugar from the cane and combined them. And Woman went from size 12 to size 14.

So God said, 'Try my fresh green salad'. And Satan presented Blue Cheese dressing and garlic croutons on the side. And Man and Woman unfastened their belts following the repast.

God then said 'I have sent you healthy vegetables and olive oil in which to cook them'.

And Satan brought forth deep fried coconut king prawns, butter-dipped lobster chunks and chicken fried steak, so big it needed its own platter, and Man's cholesterol went through the roof.

Then God brought forth the potato; naturally low in fat and brimming with potassium and good nutrition.

Then Satan peeled off the healthy skin and sliced the starchy centre into chips and deep-fried them in animal fats adding copious quantities of salt. And Man put on more pounds. God then brought forth running shoes so that his Children might lose those extra pounds.

And Satan came forth with a cable TV with remote control so Man would not have to toil changing the channels. And Man and Woman laughed and cried before the flickering light and started wearing stretch jogging suits.

Then God gave lean beef so that Man might consume fewer calories and still satisfy his appetite.

And Satan created McDonalds and the 99p double cheeseburger. Then Satan said 'You want fries with that?' and Man replied, 'Yes, and super size 'em'. And Satan said, 'It is good.' And Man and Woman went into cardiac arrest.

God sighed ......... and created quadruple by-pass surgery.

And then ............ Satan chuckled and created the National Health Service.

THE FINAL WORD ON NUTRITION

After an exhaustive review of the research literature, here's the final word on nutrition and health.:

1. Japanese eat very little fat and suffer fewer heart attacks than us.
2. Mexicans eat a lot of fat and suffer fewer heart attacks than us.
3. Chinese drink very little red wine and suffer fewer heart attacks than us.
4. Italians drink excessive amounts of red wine and suffer fewer heart attacks than us.
5. Germans drink beer and eat lots of sausages and fats and suffer fewer heart attacks than us.
6. The French eat foie-gras, full fat cheese and drink red wine and suffer fewer heart attacks than
us

CONCLUSION: Eat and drink what you like. Speaking English is apparently what kills you.

Get Back To Where You Once Belonged.

, ,

:D hi

To get the most out of our existence we have to go back and exercise our natural senses. Natural highs are free and much better for our wellbeing that any artificial means. Take the sense of 'touch', for instance. The sense of touch allows us to experience textures and sensations through our skin. This ability allowed us to be very dexterous. Craftmanship and art was born as a means of expression and communication. This brought people working together.

A Good Night Out.

,

:D hi

I just got back from an evening listening to a friend's band (Get Carter) in a local bar, and they rocked. I really enjoyed myself. A friend suggested earlier that I should take my camera to record the event but I was unable to use it because the room was so packed that the audience had to do the same dance to the music.

Not Only But Also.

:D hi

Nobody on this Earth is here to struggle and suffer alone. That is because gregariousness is part of our basic instincts. The 'world' only had it's problems when they moved away from the natural, abandoned their fellow man, and exchanged love for avarice. The less we have the more that can be shared.

Too Much of a Good Thing.......Is Wonderful!

, ,

:D hi

Yesterday was a tough day; with Opera unavailable, I was over-tired, and we had heavy rain. But today the sky is clearing, I have caught up on my sleep and feeling a whole lot better for it. Tiredness effects my condition and so I was getting pretty dizzy.

I want to get up to the woods this next week and sketch some natural backgrounds for the figures I am working on.

We used to have a saying, "If it feels good - do it." And we should - but if it consequently harms someone, it can not feel good. We should all be good for each other, 50/50, win/win. That way we create only positive vibes to combat all of the hate, misunderstanding, and all of the other negative vibes that are hurting us.

We need more whole-brain thinking going on.

, ,

:D hi

I just got back from another weekend visit to our friends in Pakefield. Last night I was treated to dinner at a Thai restaurant (spring rolls with sweet chilli sauce; chicken green curry with coconut rice; an apple and cream dessert, and a 'Singha' beer to wash it down). Delicious.

No sooner had we got back than the rain arrived here, so the garden and pots are all getting a natural watering and saving me a job.

:coffee:

It is no wonder that I do all I can to disassociate myself from the 'world' when they have no conscience. A footballer can spend £5 million on his wedding day when that amount of children are dying of aids and starvation at the same time.

The calculating left of brain must be tempered by the creative right of brain. Enlightenment comes only with whole brain thinking.

Nature versus Technology.

, ,

:D hi

I was clearing an overgrown lawn yesterday for someone else. The lawn was a good size and knee high with grass and weeds. All I used to clear it was a pair of garden shears. As I cut away the damp 'undergrowth' there were a few frogs that made their escape to less active parts of the garden. If I had made things easy for myself by using a motorised cutter there would have been a massacre! :yikes:

This little episode is a very small example of what technology is doing to all living beings on the Earth. A little effort can make a big difference.

If You Ever Find Yourself in the Sh*t - Keep Going.

:D hi

We had our first salad from our little garden last night. It was fresh, organic, and tasted wonderful. I urge everybody to grow something. It only takes a kitchen window sill and/or hanging baskets, if you do not have a garden. Then study the plant(s) closely as they grow to bear flowers, seeds, and/or fruits. You become responsible for that living being, giving the plant's existence and yours mutual recognition. It is a good education to respond with nature.

Talking to Plants.

, ,

:D hi

I had much to do in my little greenhouse today. I was going over my plants there, closely hunting for red spder mites (bug + :knight: = rip). Because it is such a small place with a lot of greenery in it - the greenhouse is like an oxygen tent and it got me thinking about people who advise us to talk to our plants. As we speak/breathe we are exhaling carbon dioxide which the plant takes in and exchanges it with oxygen. Much the same as our forests

Global Warming is Natural.

, ,

:D hi

Of course the ice caps are melting! It is because we are still coming out of the last ice age. Historically the Earth has been without the ice caps several times before and so it is to be again.

Man's carbon emissions are not helping us at all, but they are paltry to what the Earth is doing. As the planet warms up the perma-frost is thawing out and releasing huge amounts of carbon monoxide which is 25 times more damaging to our atmosphere than carbon dioxide. Also the Earth's magnetic field is weakening apace and that protects us from solar radiation. :yikes:

Instead of spending billions of dollars trying to colonise the Moon or Mars (unsustainable) it would be intelligent to spend the resources on adapting to global warming - for everybody on the planet. Every day we are on this Earth counts because we are blessed by the very joy of our living existence.

I have had a wonderful day today.

:D hi

I was working in the garden from first thing this morning, returning to my easel at lunchtime. I was going back out into the garden when I noticed that my garden was very busy with various birds that have come in to feed. I had to stand still at the door for almost an hour as the blackbirds were feeding on snails [the lettuce looked relieved], sparrows were eating the aphids and other bugs off of the roses, a couple of starlings were searching through the lawn and chaffinches joined the feast. Now this may seem insignificant for some, but to me it was amazing to watch. Garden birds are disappearing around these parts and it shows how good gardens are vital to their continueing survival.

Male or Female?

FREEZER BAGS: They are male, because they hold everything in, but you can see right through them.

PHOTOCOPIERS: These are female, because once turned off; it takes a while to warm them up again. They are an effective reproductive device if the right buttons are pushed, but can also wreak havoc if you push the wrong buttons.

TIRES: Tires are male, because they go bald easily and are often over inflated.

HOT AIR BALLOONS: Also a male object, because to get them to go anywhere, you have to light a fire under their butt.

SPONGES: These are female, because they are soft, squeezable and retain water.

WEB PAGES: Female, because they're constantly being looked at and frequently getting hit on.

TRAINS: Definitely male, because they always use the same old lines for picking up people.

EGG TIMERS: Egg timers are female because, over time, all the weight shifts to the bottom.

HAMMERS: Male, because in the last 5000 years, they've hardly changed at all, and are occasionally handy to have around.

THE REMOTE CONTROL: Female. Ha! You probably thought it would be male, but consider this: It easily gives a man pleasure, he'd be lost without it, and while he doesn't always know which buttons to push, he just keeps trying.

Pinch, punch, for the first of the month. (Silly saying).

:D hi

It is the first of June already! (It does not seem that long ago since Christmas - when I got my new air guitar). How the time is flying by these days. I remember when I was a young lad, the days used to be about a week long. But now time is so precious that one has to make every minute count.
The day has started overcast and very cool and the garden is looking sluggish now. The greenhouse however is busy 'getting there'; with tomato plants, chillies, and begonias flowering and giving some colour besides green. Again this year I have ran out of room with pots and trays of seedlings to be planted out when they are ready. Outside the roses and California poppies are in full bloom (although the poppies are closed this morning from lack of sunshine). I have uploaded some images of the garden, as it is today.

:coffee:

My own favourite quote has always been, 'Live free! - or, at least, very cheaply. Now it looks like the urbanites here have been given a wake up call with this 'credit crunch', spiralling fuel and food costs, etc. And I think that a recession has a positive side because it will force people to use less resources because they can not afford to carry on as they have been doing. It may be a bad thing for the 'world' but a good thing for the Earth. I have always said that the last human beings to survive on this Earth will be the Bushmen of the Kalahari, who have always survived on next to nothing. :sherlock:

I Love my Easel and my Easel Loves Me.

, ,

:D hi on a very wet Sunday morning. (And for those who understand this, 'Yah eh teh').

I love my easel because it takes my mind and efforts from the 'world' and back to the natural. My easel loves me because I give it purpose and my full attention while I am working. To say that we are good for each other is a definite understatement.

How is this for poetic natural justice? The Urbanites here are paving and concreteing over their gardens to make driveways for their cars. Of course, when it rains the water goes into their drainage system instead of it soaking into the earth. Consequently the drainage system is not coping, so that their houses are being flooded out! (Mother Nature strikes back  ). You can see what I have to live with, can't you? :eyes: :yikes:

Of all the things I have lost in my life - I miss my marbles the most.

, ,

:jester: hi

Very busy in the garden today. I watched a blackbird feeding his fledglings and teaching them how to find their own food on my path.

Spent a little time at my easel, going indoors and out at intervals, so not getting too many rays for my own good. It works really well for me because my art and my gardening both get more or less equal attention. I enjoy both immensly. :D

I also like to sit out in the garden in the evenings and firing up the old chimena, feeding it with flame roaring out of the chimney. (I guess it has something to do with man and fire  ). One can boil water, bake potatoes, enjoy the peace of the evening, and quietly watch for wildlife, etc.

Sublime.

, ,

:D hi

We have beautiful weather this week and the garden is blossoming apace. I am working at my easel and listening to Vivaldi's 'Four Seasons'. Both are inspiring. I just thank every single day for being here.

I have made a new online friend today. His designation is 'Ombolan' and his page is well worth a visit.

So, I said to a bird with webbed feet, "Hello duck."

, ,

:D hi

Wow, the end of another very busy week! :faint:

Norwich has just been voted the greenest town/city in the U.K. (which is great to know). Now we have the Art Festival started this week. I do not like cities but I like it here because it is like a big village.

Sally was driving home from one of her business trips in Northern Arizona when she saw an elderly Navajo woman walking on the side of the road. As the trip was a long and quiet one, she stooped the car and asked the Navajo woman if she would like a ride. With a silent nod of thanks the woman got into the car.
Resuming the journey, Sally tried in vain to make a bit of small talk with the Navajo woman. The old woman just sat silently, looking intently at everything she saw, studying every little detail, until she noticed a brown bag on the seat next to Sally. "what's in the bag?" Sally looked down at the brown bag and said, "It's a bottle of wine. I got it for my husband." The Navajo woman was silent for another moment or two. Then speaking with the quiet wisdom of an elder, she said: "Good trade."

On Pondering on Great Truths.

, ,

:D hi

GREAT TRUTHS THAT LITTLE CHILDREN HAVE LEARNED:

1) No matter how hard you try, you can't baptise cats.
2) When your Mum is mad at your Dad, don't let her brush your hair.
3) If your sister hits you, don't hit her back. They always catch the second person.
4) Never ask your 3-year old brother to hold a tomato.
5) You can't trust dogs to watch your food.
6) Don't sneeze when someone is cutting your hair.
7) Never hold a Dust-Buster and a cat at the same time.
8) You can't hide a piece of broccoli in a glass of milk.
9) Don't wear polka-dot underwear under white shorts.
10) The best place to be when you're sad is Grandpa's lap.

GREAT TRUTHS THAT ADULTS HAVE LEARNED:

1) Raising teenagers is like nailing jelly to a tree.
2) Wrinkles don't hurt.
3) Families are like fudge...mostly sweet, with a few nuts.
4) Today's mighty oak is just yesterday's nut that held its ground.
5) Laughing is good exercise. It's like jogging on the inside.
6) Middle age is when you choose your cereal for the fibre, not the toy.

GREAT TRUTHS ABOUT GROWING OLD

1) Growing old is mandatory; growing up is optional.
2) Forget the health food. I need all the preservatives I can get.
3) When you fall down, you wonder what else you can do while you're down there.
4) You're getting old when you get the same sensation from a rocking chair that you once got from a roller coaster.
5) It's frustrating when you know all the answers but nobody bothers to ask you the questions.
6) Time may be a great healer, but it's a lousy beautician.
7) Wisdom comes with age, but sometimes age comes alone.

SUCCESS:

At age 4 success is . . . not piddling in your pants.
At age 12 success is . . . having friends.
At age 17 success is . . having a drivers licence.
At age 35 success is . . . having money.
At age 50 success is . . . having money.
At age 70 success is . .. . having a drivers licence.
At age 75 success is . . . having friends.
At age 80 success is . . . not piddling in your pants.

The Painter's Work Was All In Vain.....

, ,

...those sneaky Time Bandits have struck again! :bandit: :yikes:

:D hi

Just when you sit down to work something always happens to pull you away. For instance, I started on a study of our garden and the more I looked at it I noticed a small task that needed doing. I could not concentrate and so I got up to do that quick chore. Which led to another gardening task. Anyway, before I knew it I ended up pottering jobs around the garden until my work time had run out!

All is well here and we are living like a duck (gliding along smoothly by paddling like crazy underneath). :jester:

Spring has definitely sprung here.

, ,

I love being able to work outside again. I have got trays of seedlings on the kitchen windowsill (south facing), ready to go down to the greenhouse. Just to watch each individual seed sprouting into a miniature plant and then growing on to produce it's fruit is always magic. It is a good thing to recognise each individual existence of other natural living beings.
