A Question of Aesthetics.

, ,

Appreciating the beautiful.

I was asked the other day if my aesthetisism was objective or subjective.

Art is the expression of beauty in some form such as paint on canvas, carved wood or stone, the arrangement of sounds in music, and words in poetry. The business of aestetics is to determine the nature of beauty in general and whether there are rules governing it's expression in art.

There are two main lines of thought:

(1) The objective, generally stating that beauty lies in the object.
(2) The subjective, generally holding that beauty lies in the mind of the beholder.

I must go with (2), purely because of the word 'perception'.

What about things that are ugly, but are absolutely perfect in their uglyness.
Don't get me wrong, I agree with you, just thinking of exceptions to the rule. smile

Skip, I agree with both 1 and 2. Some of my paintings are done from photos I take at junkyards/wreckingyards where there are thousands of junked cars with the hoods open, rusty parts all over the ground, etc. A few people think I am nuts and why would I go to such an ugly place. I find it thoroughly fascinating. The engines of these vehicles have been taken out and are all lined up on huge metal shelves. Generally they are all gray but they have all kinds of interesting shapes and intricate things protruding from them. Again, fascinating. They are perfect to me in their ugliness. I take the photos then totally exaggerate the colors in my paintings.

Hello,PainterWoman. Great to hear from you and thank you very much for your comment.

Yes, you find a beauty in junked cars and use your art to illustrate that fact - bringing it to the notice of others in your paintings.

I think the ugliness is in the mass of waste as a whole, but among that one can always find little pockets of fascinations and beauty.

It sounds like a trick question to me. While there may be some consensus, I hardly think there is an objective definition of beauty outside of a dictionary. Unless we are talking about precise numbers, there is no objectivity. Oh, of course, there is a chair I can trip over whether anyone thinks it's beautiful or not. That's another kind of objectivity.

Extending the point about junk, old circuit boards, rusty components, machine parts are junk to most but to someone who takes keen interest in the internals of machines and electronics, they are the most beautiful things in the world.

Even among things generally considered beautiful, the 'degree of beauty' differs for the same object. You may like sunsets, I may like sunrises better. You may like actress x and I might not. You may like navy blue, I may like Indigo. You may love cricket, and I may be crazy about football.

And that is what makes this world so beautifuly diverse.

I have got a very old wooden radio at home dating from 1930. I put a new transistorised circuitry to its skeletton and I am ravished listening to it every Sunday. (Oldies most of the time-haha!) Old things do have a soul, don't they? Kind regards.

Hi Shaunak! smile Thank you for your comment. You have just described what I meant by 'perception'.

And Hello Fifineleb. happy I think that a lot of old things derive their charms with the patina of age.
