Hiking in the Smokies

Day Hiker's Guide to all the Trails in the Smoky Mountains

Indian Flats Falls Hike - October 28, 2009

We have had some beautiful fall weather this October, and Wednesday, October 28, was one of them. Several of us hiked Middle Prong Trail, out of Tremont, to Indian Flats Falls, about 4 miles from the trailhead. On the drive in, we stopped at the bridge over Middle Prong of Little River to take the photo shown above.

Middle Prong Trail follows Lynn Camp Prong, and because of all the rain we've had this fall, the river was full, and the water was really rushing down over the rocks. With the sun shining on it, the water was a brilliant sparkling white, sending mist into the air, and creating small rainbows above the water.

On the way to the falls, we stopped, as always, to look at the 1930s car that is rusting away beside the trail. After about 2 miles of hiking, you will see a trail going off to the right into the bushes, and at the end of this short trail is the car.

Indian Flats Falls had a lot of water coming over it, and was beautiful with the sunlight on it, and the trees above turning yellow and red. We stopped for lunch, and were joined by about 8 horseback riders who were doing the Middle Prong/Panther Creek loop. See photo album for Indian Flats Falls - Middle Prong for some pictures of this hike.
