Can't install Opera on Oneiric! (Updated with fix)

, , ,

What the heck is wrong with Ubuntu 11.10. I cant install Opera! It tells me that it cant open the archive. I tried to install Gdebi but that to tells me that the archive might be broken. cry

Unity lags allot and make my computer fan spin like crazy, so I tried Gnome 3.2 today and it is actually pretty good. I cant wait to see what the other more GNOME shell centric distro's can do with this DM.

But I still can't get no Opera.

Update
You have to use the terminal to install any .debs you download from the internet in Oneiric.

  • cd ~/Downloads
  • sudo dpkg -i opera_11.51.1087_i386.deb

That will solve this problem.

Synaptic does not work either. It just opens and then closes again after two seconds.

Did Canonical do this on purpose to force users to the Software Center?

Opera get 0(zero) points in a security test run by Microsoft.

Yet Another Anonymous writes: Updated to oneiric today... installing opera from repo works fine: add following /etc/apt/sources.list (or add them with some graphic tool): deb http://deb.opera.com/opera/ stable non-free deb http://deb.opera.com/opera-beta/ stable non-free and update from terminal (or use some graphic tool to install): apt-get update apt-get install opera After that I reckon that when opera releases new versions "apt-get upgrade" or Synaptic will automatically update Opera. Can't comment on crashing issue, installed KDE and besides every time I start graphical install tool on Linux I'm asking do I enjoy torturing myself. Usually answer is NO, so... terminal window, here I come!

I know i can add it to my sources but I couldn't remember the Url to Opera source. Anyway, when you install their .deb it will add itself to sources.list automatically.

This issue didn't just affect Opera by the way, see:

https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/software-center/+bug/868188

Opera worked again before the fix was out because we circumvented the problem:
