So…I’m starting a new blog, in honor of college! This will be my day-to-day blog….again, the serious ones are always in my other....I guess I should start with move-in. We had stayed overnight in a town near Madison, because we had to be here at 7:30 in the morning. So when we got here, I had to get out of the car to get my photo taken for my student ID. The girl who took my photo reminded me of Dee SO MUCH! (Nick agrees haha…) Anyway, then we went back up to my dorm, where my suspicions were confirmed- I have WAY TOO MUCH FUCKIN STUFF! It took forever to get all my stuff in the room….and everyone was giving me weird looks. I wouldn’t have brought so much if I had a roommate, so shut up people lol
Anyway, we did lunch with our parents, then went over to an opening ceremony-type thingy….some people talked, and we had the WORST fire safety video ever. Basically, your dorm room will be unlivable in two and a half minutes if you throw a match in your trash can and then run away. Smooth move, ex lax.
We got to meet our sibling groups then, and Kellie became the first person to talk to me! I actually became really close with my group- my big brother, Arnold, is awesome, though he’ll be away in some random country for the first semester, which sucks. Anyway, I also ended up hanging out with Kellie, Brigid, and Amy from my sibling group ALL the time! More on that later.
So we played some ice breakers to get to know each other (train wreck without chairs….that was interesting

). While we were standing around waiting to go to the next event, I ended up standing around with some people, including Amy, this guy Gus who may become my new favorite gay guy (

), and this girl Heidi who lives next to me.
Eventually we went back in for the “official” ceremony where we all had to sign the book or something….idk it was kind of weird and I think I missed the point lol. My parents and I went back to my room to get some stuff straightened out and figure out what stuff I was sending home with them (hahaha….Matt and Elizabeth, you guys know

), and then we went to this like farewell thing where we got some food and my parents….well….said goodbye

Our first dinner was spent with our sibling groups (though Amy didn’t show up….*glare* hahaha), just chatting and everything. I’ve been talking to EVERYONE! I never really realized before how often I look down, especially when I’m walking. And when I make eye contact with someone, I always look away quickly, sometimes after smiling, because I’m afraid that they either won’t want to talk to me, or they’ll come over and talk to me and then I’ll have to make conversation. It’s literally a habit….so I’m trying really hard to break it.
Anyway, I went back to my room afterwards to try and unpack. I headed over to this thing called Hooray! around 9. It was really interesting….we did some more ice breakers, getting to know each other- but it was the last thing we did that was really intense. We all stood in a circle, and the leader would make statements. If the statement applied to you, you should step into the middle- but of course, you didn’t have to step in if you weren’t comfortable. He started out with easy ones- Step into the circle if you are a female, a male, an older brother, have a younger sister, etc. But later, they became much more serious- if you are a survivor of sexual abuse, if you have attempted suicide, if you know anyone who had tested HIV positive. And finally, if you need a hug right now. I was just really affected by it, even though I wasn’t always completely honest.
One of my RAs, Casey, who lived on Tolley 1st last year when I did my overnight with Grace, ended up stopping by to check on me around midnight (she was making her rounds), and we wound up talking for over an hour. At one point, this guy Joe from across the hall randomly stepped out into the hall.
Joe: *sounding dazed and sleepy* I’m really hungry, I think I’m just going to get some food because I can’t sleep when I’m this hungry…I just think I should go downstairs and get some food, I don’t want to wake [his roommate], etc etc
Me: Umm…okay. Are you okay? You sound tired.
Joe: I just…..do I know you? *introduced self*
Casey: So….maybe you should go get some food and remedy the situation.
Joe: Okay *wanders away*
He actually ended up coming back after getting some food, and sat in my room talking for about 45 minutes. He’s one of those kids who’s EXTREMELY awkward to talk to and gets flustered easily while trying to articulate, but he seems like a nice enough kid.
After Joe went to bed, I unpacked a little more, then turned in for the night. It felt really strange at first- I didn’t recognize where I was. But when I turned off the lights, the first thing I saw was the ceiling- which was full of glow-in-the-dark stars left over from the student who lived there last year. It was strangely comforting, and I quickly fell asleep.
Friday morning, I got up around seven to shower, despite the fact that I had gone to bed around 2:30 the night before. My first experience in a Drew shower- it was interesting. Much better than most, I’m sure, because Tolley-Brown (my dorm) has- get this- PRIVATE BATHROOMS! That’s right, our dorm got remodeled over the summer, and instead of a traditional dorm-style bathroom with a set of stalls and a set of shower stalls, we have two regular toilets and six toilet-shower combos in a small room, which is AMAZING.
Anyway, I did that, then breakfast with some random people, I can’t even remember who anymore lol. I went down to the academic fair, which was essentially a chance for all of us to get to meet the heads of various departments, with Cat. We stayed there for a while, then I ran back to the dorm to get my camera before the tour of Madison. We were with our big sibling groups for that tour, so it was really fun- I really get along with so many of these people.
We ended up hanging out for a while- I honestly can’t remember where or what we did- before going to our common reading discussions. I was actually late for mine, but nobody yelled at me, which was good

. It was sufficiently boring, however….oh well, what else is new. I met a kid named Jake (the pimp)….haha he’s actually in the room I’m in right now

I didn’t officially meet him until sometime later….I really don’t know when, maybe dinner of that day? Probably. Anyway, we ate dinner after that, and it feels like I’ve been here forever, so I really don’t know anymore who I ate with at any given meal. But yeah, I had dinner lol.
After dinner, we went back to the Tolley-Brown lounge (which is GORGEOUS, btw) to get to know all the RAs there. We got to ask each of them a bunch of question, and then they read slips of paper with questions such as “Who is obsessed with Starbucks?” My floor lost, seeing as Brown 3rd got FIFTEEN FRICKIN POINTS…..anywya. Then we went over to the “lack of talent show”, which was put on by the orientation committee. It was okay….some of it was really funny, some of it was okay, but none of it sucked…which is a plus.
Anyway, INTERESTING STORY TIME!!! This is the ballad of Tom.
Brigid, Sam (Amy’s roommate), Amy, Andrew, Jake, Sean, this girl Meredith, and I were all sitting in the lounge for a while just talking and hanging out. Around midnight, a guy swings in, all loose, and sits down next to Sean. For a split second, I thought they knew each other, and this kid was just one of those awkwardly creepy friends (like Matt

) that you don’t really want to acknowledge in front of people. However, he quickly wrapped his arm around Sean’s head and said, “Are you Nick?”
I froze. NICK?? WTF??? I started laughing, but that stopped pretty quickly as his behavior got stranger and stranger. After a few minutes of rambling (though he was speaking fairly clearly), Sam and I began to whisper to each other, “Is he drunk?” “I’m not sure. Maybe.”
Well, “maybe” became “SMASHED” when he got up, stumbled between the chair he had been in into a spot between Andrew and Meredith on the couch, and wrapped his arms around Meredith. She fairly withered into her chair, since she was already quite a shy, quiet girl, who was barely talking to us as it was. By this point Sam and I were asking a different question- what do I do? Should I go get an RA?
Finally, I decided enough was enough, and slipped off to go upstairs and get Casey or Matt (our other RA). However, Casey and her boyfriend (a huge, football-player of a guy) happened to be coming downstairs just as I went up to get them. I quickly grabbed her- “Casey, can I talk to you for a second?” And, when we got away from his view, “That guy is trashed ."
Unfortunately, she told me that there was nothing she could do about it unless she saw him actually drinking the drink. She started to tell me what to do if we felt extremely uncomfortable or unsafe, but she was interrupted by her boyfriend, who announced, “Casey, he’s really all over that girl, and she does NOT look happy about it.”
After peeking around the corner, Casey marched over, sat on the table in front of him, and began to talk quietly, explaining that we felt uncomfortable and he was going to have to go back to his room. Suddenly, he began to ramble about how he had gone out to Summit with some friends, and he just couldn’t say no when they started drinking. Even after she had a full confession, though, there was nothing she could do about it except take her boyfriend and walk the kid (Tom, in case you haven’t figured that out) back to his room.
As soon as he left, we all turned immediately to Meredith and said, “OH MY GOD, ARE YOU OKAY?!?!” She was EXTREMELY shaken up, so Amy and Sam took her over to get a drink, and she came back and sat with us for a while. Some other stuff probably happened later that night, but all else pales in comparison to Tom. I went to bed around 3.
That morning, I got up around 7:45 and headed over to breakfast around 8:30 (it ended at 9:00). On my way out of breakfast, Nick walked by me, carrying his computer, as I was trying to figure out where in hell Sitterly House was. He kicked me and then invited me back to his dorm room to see what it looked like, since I hadn’t visited him yet (it was sadly barren). I then had to nearly run to Sitterly, which was apparently on the other side of campus, and I had no idea where it was. Fortunately, my advisor was amazing, and didn’t even appear to notice that I was a few minutes late. Then again, she was an English professor- she was a bit scattered and hectic, but seems to be really fun.
After my meeting, I hung out for a while, then went to pick up my computer at the commons. I went back to my room to start setting it up, then Brigid stopped by to walk over to lunch with me (keep in mind, I spent a lot more time at meals and in between stuff with people, but I don’t remember most of the specific anymore lmao). Anyway, we walked over to the area where we were supposed to pick up our “brown bag” lunches, and then met our first year seminar group somewhere to eat (our leader didn’t show up until it was almost over- further proof that she is a bit scatter-brained haha).
My computer hated me, apparently….because it wouldn’t let me log in for a long time. I took it over to the computer helping station, where I ran into Alvyn, who wanted to be one of them, apparently. After insulting me for “already breaking my computer” (which I DIDN’T!

), he left pretty quickly, and I was there for almost an hour waiting for my computer to stop being such an asswipe. I missed the (semi-) mandatory survey while sitting in the basement of the archives.
Around 3, we had to go to a talk about, essentially, recycling and sustainability. Considering last year’s “AP Liberal” course, I felt I was perfectly qualified to zone out during this hour-long talk. During that time, I decided that I wanted to become a techie.
That was followed right away by a SEX TALK! Which was actually really interesting- it was done by this guy who thinks that most of the problems in sex come from the fact that people DON’T talk about it (I tend to agree with him, actually). There’s so much miscommunication, and so many false perceptions when it comes to sex, it’s absolutely ridiculous. I think everyone needs to be so much more open about stuff like this, because making it taboo to say the word “penis” just makes everything stupid. And basically, he told us how to have better sex. It was awesome lmao.
So yeah, I enjoyed that. I went back to the dorm to grab something before the barbeque and soccer game I was intending on attending, but instead I ran into Brigid, Miranda, and Lindsey, who were going into town to eat. We ended up waiting in the lounge for a really long time for Darcey, Jam, and Alex (who reminds me of Alex’s biffle Anthony like WHOA). Eventually, they showed up, and we walked to this restaurant in town called Atlanta Bread. While we were there, Darcey spent AGES explaining this random kind of LARPing to us, but it was really interesting (if not confusing). Anyway, after a while I started to not feel well, so I announced that I was going back to the school, and Brigid decided to come with me.
We walked back, and met up with Amy and Sam at the soccer game. We watched the end of it (we CRUSHED the other team 5-0, btw

), and then headed over to the UC for a photography scavenger hunt. It was really fun….we thought we were doing awesome at first, because we were most of the way done with the list after about twenty minutes. Then I turned the page over, for some odd reason, and we realized there was an ENTIRE list of things we had to take photos of. So that was interesting lmao anyway check out the photos on facebook

One of the last items on the scavenger hunt was to take a picture of a rainbow ribbon at the Alliance table, which was conveniently not anywhere very visible. However, what with my typical eye for bright colors, we were running down the path when I went RAINBOW!, vaulted a stone wall, and threw myself at the Alliance table. So after we counted the points for the scavenger hunt (we got 116, coming in second place to a team that got 139ish), we headed back to the table and wound up chatting with the two co-chairs of the club who were there- Tom, a senior who reminded me insanely of Steve Marois, and Jen, a junior girl who ended up talking to us for over an hour, just chatting- talking about the club, me essentially coming out to my new friends by casually telling the story of why I don’t have a roommate, talking about partying and clubbing and where it’s really not safe for us as girls to go party. It was really fun, and it was definitely interesting to get the opinion of a nice upperclassman.
Then I went back to Amy and Sam’s room with Brigid, and we hung out there, talking and laughing, until around 2 in the morning, when an RA walked by and told us it was after quiet hours, and we were going to have to shut the door and keep a little quieter. Instead, Brigid and I headed back over to Tolley (they live in Brown), and I’m assuming she went to sleep. Personally, I sat down at my computer to check my facebook, and….well, that was that

I ended up going back to sleep around 4….I know, I know, it was bad

So I woke up at 8:15 and took a shower before skipping breakfast. That morning, Brigid showed up at my room around 8:55 (she lives two doors down from me, and I’m on her way to the stairs haha) and went down to the gym with me for our “Breaking The Cycle” session. It was a very interesting conference-type thing on diversity, and I really enjoyed it, even though I really don’t think it really changed my outlook very much- I tend to think I’m pretty all set in terms of accepting diversity. But one part was really powerful for me- the five people each sat down and told their stories, and when the first guy was telling his story, he got to a party where he said, “And they called me names like…” At that point, the other four people jumped in with a series of hurtful names geared towards people who were overweight, which is what his topic was. He then said, “To this day, whenever I hear one of those words, I feel the urge to run.” And without warning, tears came to my eyes.
I’m not sure why that hit me so hard, but I came close to crying. I guess it’s because I know so much how he feels- I still can’t hear the innocent words “Megawheels” or even “BMW” without flinching and feeling the urge to flee. So when he said that, it just hit home.
When Breaking the Cycle was over, Brigid, Sam, and I headed over to Brother’s College for something called Breaking Out, where we all had small, random group discussions about what we had recently gone over. That was actually really interesting and enjoyable, but it was way too short- before I knew it, I was headed off to lunch.
I ate lunch with Tom (the gay one, not the drunk one

….I feel so bad for him having that stigma now lmao), one of his friends, Brigid, Sam, Cathleen, and Melissa. We ate, then Sam, Melissa, and I went back to Sam’s room and sat there talking for a while. Melissa eventually went to visit some people, and Sam and I ended up having an in-depth conversation about friends, family, being bi, etc, etc, etc. I love bonding!
So yeah, then we headed out to Paving Your Way, which was essentially our talk about not drinking. Except, it wasn’t a “don’t drink” talk. In fact, nobody has told us not to drink. Instead, they all tell us that we need to drink responsibly, and give us tips on how to do it without getting completely smashed and dying of alcohol poisoning. It was interesting. But yeah, so that was like an hour and a half long.
Afterwards, we went back to Sam and Amy’s room to get Amy and Gus and go into town so I could go to the Verizon store and *hopefully* get my phone fixed (The screen is broken….so don’t text me, please call and leave a voicemail if I don’t answer

)! But we ended up hanging out at their room for a while, waiting for Gus to come back, and after a while we completely forgot that we were waiting for him, so we just left. When we were most of the way out the gate, we realized that we left Gus behind, and had to call him and play musical phone trying to get him to wherever we were. When he finally caught up with us, we walked into town, only to discover that *surprise, surprise* everything was closed, because IT IS SUNDAY! So we turned around and walked back (with Gus complaining the whole time….Gloomy Gus lmao) pretty much immediately haha.
Gus is a commuter, so he didn’t have a meal plan except for lunch, and we couldn’t get him up into the cafeteria. He was going to sit down and wait for us, but apparently he got bored (again, not surprising) and decided he was going to leave us. So we ate….afterwards, I decided to head over to Welch to say hi to Nick, but it was not the best time, so I ended up coming back to the cafeteria to sit with them for a while. When we were finally finished at the cafeteria, we walked down to see if the bookstore was open, but it wasn’t, so we went back to Sam and Amy’s room, and I’ve pretty much been here since then.
Amy, Brigid, Sam, and I have been here the whole time. Caroline, Brigid’s roommate, was here for a while, left, and then came back, and Andrew, Jake, and Jake’s roommate Chris showed up around ten, and have been hanging out since then. We’ve had some interesting moments here- for instance, there was a mysterious banging on the wall next to Amy’s bed, while a guy and girl were confirmed in the room next door, alone. So God only knows what that was….okay, well, I guess we all know, actually

Anyway, we’re having a really good time- at least, I know I am. Nearly all of us girls have been sitting here talking and on our computers for quite a while, and it feels like we’ve known each other for a million years- at least, absolutely more than four days. I was so scared that I was going to find friends here, but not anything that was going to be a real connection, and I’ve already started finding that niche. I’m so happy.
