Film Review Of The Month

,

Motion pictures are an ingenious invention. Especially the old black-and-whites. Imagine all the planning that went into wardrobe and makeup to achieve the hues of grey desired for each shot!
Anyway, film, movie, talkie, whatever you wanna call it, it's a moving picture with words. We watch, sometimes to learn, but mostly to escape into fiction.
Most people know that we watch movies somewhat later than release day - we wait until DVD release, and sometimes a long time after that.

October's movie:
What's it called? Tropic Thunder.

Who's in it? Amongst others, Robert Downey Jr, Jack Black and Ben Stiller.
What's it about? Well, it's a movie about a movie. The actors play actors who are shooting for war movie. They are thrust into deep jungle to get deep into character, but something goes mightily awry. They are convinced all is status quo and that the things happening around them are all scripted...
What's good about it? The "adverts" had me in fits, the editing is well done, there's a pretty big budget for effects and the acting is superb as far as comedy goes. It's a strange movie, but hilarious.
What's bad about it? Well, there are a few cameo appearances I thought were pretty weak. Also, the story gets a little thin at times, but the majority of the actors really do shine through.
So, should I see it? Unless you don't like to laugh, or hate strong language, yes. I'm sorry I've not gone into more detail - it's a difficult film to describe without ruining some part of it - it's really something you need to see for yourself.

Movie Review Of The Month

I think it's funny that we use the word "movie" these days. Movies were before Talkies, so why don't we use "Talkies"? Anyway, film, movie, talkie, whatever you wanna call it, it's a moving picture with words. We watch, sometimes to learn, but mostly to escape into fiction.
I don't see movies on or near release day. I see them when we make it to the DVD rental place, and I can be bothered to watch. It's a good thing.

September's Movie:
What's it called? Knowing.

Who's in it? Nicolas Cage, Rose Byrne, other people.
What's it about? A time capsule is unearthed from a school, whose students, years ago, had put pictures they'd drawn into it. One drawing is not a drawing at all - just a series of seemingly random numbers scrawled hurriedly by one of the pupils. John Koestler's (Nick Cage's) son recieves the paper with all the numbers on, and John discovers that the numbers turn out not to be random at all, but accurate predictions of events throughout the fifty years passed, and also the future...
What's good about it? The first three-quarters of the film. Suspense, creepiness, mystery and big-budget kaboom mix well to be very entertaining. The plot seems to progress so very well, but...
What's wrong with it? ...the ending sucks. Total cop-out, idiotic, stupid ending. It ruins the entire movie. Had me shouting at the television screen in anger for wasting my interest on a film just to have it end so moronically. I'll put it this way - if they had to go along the same "route of thinking" for the end, I've got one that's better - the thing at the very end should've been used to avert the disaster, for sacrifice. It would have been just a little less idiotic.
So, should I see it? I wouldn't recommend it. I give it 1/5, because the ending ruins the whole thing.

Evil sheep and surprising comedians...

Both media things. The first is a newly released film fresh from New Zealand - Black Sheep . A delightful little horror-comedy. Sheep-cloning experiment gone wrong turns sheep and man alike to zombie/weresheep status, with plenty of funny things to keep the mood light. It really put a bright smile on my really bad day. Absolutely hilarious. Keep your eyes open for the mint sauce bit, too.

Secondly, Eddie Izzard . As a comedian, I find him very hit-and-miss, but - as with so many comedians, his prowess as an actor is superb... We have just rented season 1 of The Riches . I'd seen the adverts for it on Virgin 1 late last year, and I was intrigued by them to say the least. We're three episodes in right now, and it's very compelling stuff. It's weird how many comedians turn out to be great serious actors, isn't it? Jim Carrey, Robin Williams... Both of them make fantastic serious films. Ever seen One Hour Photo ? Brilliant acting by Robin Williams. Outstanding. Anyway, a good day for media! All three things are a must-see.

Babel

Y'know, a lot of people make the judgement that Brad Pitt is a bad actor - mainly because in the past he's been cast to bad films to make them look better. To those people I say open your eyes. Did you not see Fight Club? It's one of my favourite films. Pitt is the kind of actor whose performances get better with age, as do Will Smith's...
