Purple Realm

Their consoles are poo. However...

Meet the sexy Sony Ericsson G900.

You'll recall my personal musts from my new phone from my post below, and this more than meets the requirements.

The RAM is a great 128MB, and this is THE most important thing to me. The processor is a little less powerful than my current phone, which is a bit sucky - but it's not really of much consequence to me - everything else rather makes up for that. Plus, it has WLAN - mega-important for futureproofing, as we'll ditch network charges in favour of Wi-Fi once we've moved.

It has both touch screen and pad controls, very cool, and it boasts a 5MP camera which utilizes touch screen for focus and centering, and actually has a video light for filming in dim places. The phone supports a variety of media filetypes, too, which is very handy.

Details on the phone at the moment are preliminary estimates, as the final full spec list has not been released, but it's looking good. It's a Symbian, and it also comes with the latest version of Opera Mobile built-in. Of course, Opera Mobile needs to be purchased after the trial period, but it's a one-off payment on a good investment. Also, expandable memory handles M2 cards up to 8GB, phone memory is around the 150MB mark.

I do favour Sony Ericsson phones and cameras. I've never found an equal to this company, and this phone reaffirms my sentiments. I like the look of this sexy little candybar, and at just £300 sim-free price, I'm waiting for the catch. Don't disappoint me, guys, cause I'm pretty damn excited by this pretty little wonder.

UK release date for the Sony-Ericsson G900 is the first week in June this year. I'll be watching this one closely.

My only misgiving is a general distrust of touchscreens that aren't protected.

Kiran, look up the Samsung p9000. It's the first of many.

Dark FurieFurie Sunday, April 20, 2008 8:09:59 PM

You're the same as me Mart. I believe this one's scratch resistant.

theoddbod Sunday, April 20, 2008 8:12:06 PM

Scratch resistant is code for 'almost as easy to scratch as the others'. In short, marketing bullshit.

Spaggyj Sunday, April 20, 2008 8:25:41 PM

Oops. Expected July. And Mart, go here! http://developer.sonyericsson.com/site/global/products/phonegallery/g900/p_g900.jsp *jumps up and down*

A small side note - I don't know if you've ever tried to use your phone while the charger is plugged in, but having it on the side is a bit of a pain (at least for me, being left-handed). Unfortunately, all the new SE phones seems to be doing that.

Spaggyj Sunday, April 20, 2008 9:40:08 PM

Have, used to it. Doesn't bother me. It's easier for me actually.
I've decided. I'm getting this phone, definately. It's got over 6 times the ram of my 6120, for starters. Just looked up the menu interface, locking and stylus location... Impressed. Much. Need. Now. Can't. Wait. Grrr.

Dark FurieFurie Sunday, April 20, 2008 10:28:32 PM

It's June worldwide, but the shop here gets it in July.

P9000 is primarily a UMPC.It doesn't have a touch screen.It costs about $2000 i.e. 100,000 Rs.It's not sleek.
If it had cost 200-300$,had a touchscreen.I would have bought it.

I thought my criteria were too picky!

Not a chance in hell Kiran. 1gig processors are new. Most current smartphones still run off 0.3 gigs and below. The ultra mobile PC moniker is just the latest way to say smartphone. Sure, that ran Windows XP as an OS, but it's the hardware that defines it as a phone.

KYrenKYren Monday, April 21, 2008 6:27:42 PM

So I won't get any access into hell.:DMik,thank you for the information.I really hope at least in 5 years a UMPC would be priced at $200-300.Kim,I used to access the net through the internet cafès in my city. When I bought my 6630 at $300 and accessed the net through it,it was faster than the cafè PCs.I am not too picky.I just want my mobile to work as a complete PC.
