The Day I Scared The Official Xbox Magazine

,

Okay, so, last month's issue of OXM (popular Xbox mag over here) had a speculative article on the pending release of the game Resident Evil 5. In the article, the writer pondered upon the identities of some of the characters.

Having followed this series of games since they first appeared, I decided to give them my opinions in the form of an email. In this email I went into a lot of detail, telling them that the main male character looks more like someone else, spewing off theory and well, it was very long-winded.

Mik bought this month's issue today, and what do you know, they printed it. Even though I rambled on a LOT. And I scared them  .

This is their printed reply:
"Wow Kimmie. Do you actually think about anything else apart from Resident Evil? Good work, although a little worrying. The lead character has now definately been confirmed as Chris Redfield, but as for the other stuff, more will be revealed when we get hands-on with Resi 5 next issue..."

And underneath, a screenshot of Resi 5 with the caption, "The game has "fervent" fans..."

Now, I suspected as much, as I said in my email to them, even though he looks far more like someone else.

Here's what I said:

"Now, let me just start by telling you I'm an avid fan of the entire
Resi series - I've followed all the games since the debut on the PS1,
and the guessing for Resi 5 is doing my head in.
I think I saw the first screenshot last year. I've been obsessing ever
since! So I've gotta get my opinion out there - Since the first
screenshot I've thought that the male character bears a striking
resemblance to Carlos Olivera. The jaw, muscle tone, even the
hairstyle screams Carlos at me. That said, I'm probably wrong, after
all, Leon transformed from a flame-haired, sky eyed rookie in Resi 2
to a blonde haired, brown eyed lion in Resi 4, didn't he? Hell, it
could even be HUNK - we've never seen his face.

My opinion on the blonde-haired girl being supported by
Chris/Carlos/Whoever is that she's too young too be Ashley. My thought
is that she's Sherry Birkin from Resi 2. She'd be about the right age
by now, right? And the mystery woman with dark hair, I've no clue. My
first thought was Jill Valentine - the clothing is more her style than
Claire Redfield's, isn't it? That said, Claire's been through a lot,
her attitude's changed. My next thought was that the character looks
in her early twenties at oldest, so it couldn't be either of them -
but, then, given Leon's impossible transformation I wouldn't rule it
out entirely.

Told ya I'm obsessive!"

I scared the peeps at OXM with what seems to be deranged fangirlism! .
I'm not doing too bad - I've had a personal apology from ONM's (Official Nintendo Magazine) editor before :D .

Thought it'd be worth posting about p: .

 Good of you to make your opinions known.
Particularly since it is not unheard of for magazines to get their facts wrong.

It still makes my blood boil when I think of that supposed "new feature" in the latest incarnation of a game I followed for years (I won't mention the name). Particularly since this much-hyped addition had been in for about 5 years! :irked:

I wonder how many hits you will get in light of this post. Resi fans thinking: "Just who is that  Kimmie that puts my obsession to shame?" :D

What was the ONM apology for? :D

Kimmie 11. July 2008, 00:30

No, I think they're right. I pretty much knew it'd be Chris, just damn well doesn't look like him, but neither does the latest Leon.

Probably most people will think I'm a sad git, oh well  . Bit embarrassed actually. Didn't expect it to make it to print.

The ONM apology was for a fault with a free gift. It was a DS Case that supposedly could carry the original DS or the DS Lite, but mine was made to fit only the DS Lite, so I emailed and thanked them for reminding me I was too poor to get the sexier version of the DS  . Very uncharacteristic of me!

Moesring 11. July 2008, 00:36

:bets Kimmie will get at least one hit searching for the author of the email. Unfortunately, Kimmie is the only one who could know for certain if such a hit ever occurs :

So, they sent you a DS Lite case and you have a DS, am I correct?
Did they send you a DS Lite as compensation for this blunder? Or just a correct case? :D

Kimmie 11. July 2008, 00:40

At the time, I only had a DS. They sent the correct case, and I upgraded later on. I doubt I'll get searches, as my surname has not been listed on this blog publically

By now, you should have had at least one hit searching for "kimmie resi oxm". For bonus points, I bet the actual page they visited was http://my.opera.com/Spaggyj/info

Now that I someone has set the ball rolling, the hits will come flooding in and I could collect my ill-gotten gains... if only we actually bet something in the first place

Santa Furie 11. July 2008, 09:37

I'm still pissed at that magazine for screwing me out of a game.

Kimmie 11. July 2008, 09:47

It was YOUR fault!

Santa Furie 11. July 2008, 10:12

I sent them the address. It was the other mag that I didn't.

Dacotah 11. July 2008, 10:54

Hi Kimmie x

Kimmie 11. July 2008, 11:15

No, you did it twice!

theoddbod 11. July 2008, 23:46

Wow, you really got into those games :eyes:. The only game I've ever got heavily addicted to was probably the first Civilization.

Kimmie 11. July 2008, 23:56

I did. I can't remember the year of release for Resi 1 on the first Playstation, but that started it. It's a long love  .
I can appreciate the quality of the Civ games, objectively. However, they're not my cup of tea at all. I totally understand why they're so popular, though.

theoddbod 12. July 2008, 00:02

I feel the same way about the Resident Evil games...they sound good, they're just not my thing. Tried...no joy.
Must get round to flogging Wii Resi 4 on Ebay awww.

Santa Furie 12. July 2008, 00:22

Having played the Wii version now I can confirm that it's crud compared to the Gamecube or PS2 versions. It just doesn't control as well.

I suppose there's a lot of backstory to get through for newbies to the series too.

theoddbod 12. July 2008, 00:28

Only game I'm waiting for really is Beyond Good And Evil 2...just cause the first one was so good. The trailer is a bit different p:

Kimmie 12. July 2008, 01:33

Yeah, it did suck on the Wii. Resi ain't for everyone. Although, have you tried Umbrella Chronicles for Wii? That's pretty cool, in it's own league. I think I'll try Civ Revolutions when the price drops a bit.

I wasn't a fan of BG&E, but I'm hard to please as far as games are concerned. Mik loved it, just wasn't my thing. He's all excited about the new one. I've gotta say I'm also intrigued... But nothing compares to Fable 2. *drools* I NEED that game!

Moesring 12. July 2008, 01:36

Did Hitslink say you had a hit or not, Kimmie? You never did say P:

Kimmie 12. July 2008, 02:08

Yes, I did. And I recognised the IP p:

Moesring 12. July 2008, 02:12

Anyway, why is Kimmie up at the time?

Santa Furie 12. July 2008, 03:06

Beyond Good & Evil was a work of art. Brilliantly realised gameplay, stylish graphics, excellent bosses (especially the slow motion, reversed controls part at the end boss), dramatic music that actually added to the game, AI companions that did what I wanted them to, controls that were simple yet deep enough to feel realistic and a sense of wonder and exploration from moving about the world despite it being so small. There's just nothing quite like it. It's one of my top games.

I've seen a single screen from the trailer and it's got me in a tizz over how pretty the sequel is, as well as fingers crossed that the gameplay lives up to the old standards. It's also the one game I want that I'm not researching as I don't want to spoil it for myself. The first came as a shock cause I knew nothing about it and I want to feel like that again.

Kimmie 12. July 2008, 09:32

LOL Moe, you asked just as I logged out for the night. No special reason - Mik and I usually keep 18-20 hour waking days so our sleep routine is a bit abnormal :left:

theoddbod 12. July 2008, 10:05

Beyond Good and Evil is one of a tiny handful of games that I've played through multiple times, trying to find everything in them. I can't think of a thing I didn't like about it.
Not really got any interest in Umbrella Chronicles.

Another game I'm looking forward to is Mafia II :D

Santa Furie 12. July 2008, 12:03

Only one pearl I couldn't find. Apparently you have to do something online to get a code for it. :frown:

theoddbod 12. July 2008, 13:08

Yeah, but it's nothing major. If I remember rightly, you give them the code in the game (which indicates your progress in it somehow), and they give you another one to enter somewhere. I think it opened a mini game.
It's been a while.

Santa Furie 12. July 2008, 13:45

Had no connection back then. :frown:

theoddbod 12. July 2008, 15:32

Not even on phone? *checks age of game* 2003? Hmmm...ok, maybe not a useful one.

Santa Furie 12. July 2008, 17:25

When we got it, o2 had just stopped their free web and no-one else was doing it at a decent price.

Kimberly 13. July 2008, 04:17

Kimmie 13. July 2008, 09:33
