Fictional Character Of The Month
Sunday, 1. November 2009, 09:03:02
Ah, tv shows. Teams of writers cramped into small, humid rooms combine everything they've ever seen, heard and thought of, much like dreams, to create a fictional life with its own backround, life story and personality.
Once created, the parade of thespians begins, lines read and emotions high to find a perfect fit to bring the person made in scratchings on paper to life.
It can be a lengthy process, or remarkably quick. Some say it's luck, others say it's fate.
I say it's television, and sometimes the combination of the thespian and the words on the paper become something rather wondrous indeed - and I shall detail one of these for you now.
November's fictional character:
Name: Sheldon Cooper.

Appears in: The Big Bang Theory.
Played by: Jim Parsons.
Random Character info: Sheldon is a theoretical physicist with an IQ of 187. He has an extensive knowledge of almost everything bar pop culture and human relations.
Sheldon has no grasp on sarcasm or the emotions of others, and is incredibly obsessive-compulsive about almost everything in his life.
He was a child prodigy - conducting hazardous experiments at even a young age, and achieving his first phd at just 16. He loves comic books, videogames, superheroes and sci-fi.
Why I love him: He's neurotic, narcissistic, a perfectionalist and a know-it-all - and that's good viewing when put into the right context. And bless him, he just doesn't know how to work a social life. Sheldon is logical to a very critical fault - which, of course, can also lead to some really funny situations.
A couple of quotes:
"What does that expression mean, "Friends with benefits"? Does he provide her with health insurance?"
"I believe the appropriate metaphor here involves a river of excrement and a Native American water vessel without any means of propulsion."
"Everybody has a date. Even you, Mario, going after Princess Peach. And what am I doing? I'm just enabling you."
And finally - not so much a quote, nor Sheldon speaking but - Leonard says, when Sheldon, bless him, tries to smile:
"We're here to see Koothrappali, not kill Batman!"

I'm sure out of the loop.

A lot of the comedy of the other characters comes from them reacting to him, playing off how they think he'll react to something or foiling his neuroses. Like whenever he knocks for Penny he has to knock three times, saying her name after each knock. At one point she knocks back, saying his name after each knock and the whole thing drives him mad as he tries to get his three knocks in. Brilliant moment that had me in tears from laughing. Not quite as much as the Joker smile though.

Sheldon makes the show, of course.. Far too few shows with intellectual humor these days...
Thanks for the link here!

Oh! I forgot the whole Superman merciful death quote.

The first one of the current season is my favorite.
Leonard messes with test results while on the expedition in Greenland, to make Sheldon happy because he was driving everyone crazy... upon their return, the truth comes out, and Sheldon decides he's leaving and going back home to live with his mom in Texas, I believe.
She's a fundamental Christian, and you know Sheldon... and both stubborn as can be... You can just imagine the fireworks, I'm sure.
Well, I can't wait for you to see it. Best episode yet..
Actually, the one last week was excellent too.. Yes, this season is gonna be well worth the wait for you guys...

Sometimes, Sheldon's neurosis reminds me a liiiiitle too much of my own.

I love Sheldon's mom. Hitting him with a bible cause he wouldn't eat his sprouts
Furie # 2. November 2009, 00:35
You did mean Sheldon, didn't you Rosie? I'd hate to hurt your lovely rotting forehead petals after all.
It's still the Joker smile episode for me. Every time he pulls that smile in the episode I'm in tears. The whole show is an expert mix of Frasier, Seinfeld and Kids In The Hall if anyone's looking for a comparison.

*does the Sheldon smile*
Yeah, this season is seemingly really hitting the stride, so to speak, especially developing the secondary characters and giving them whole episode focus now and again.... I know you're gonna be in stitches.
Mik, Sheldon trying to understand social mores (dammit, I may have misspelled, ahem... okay RULES) is one of the most hilarious part of his character... he does try... *giggles* and fails. Still it makes him pretty adorable.

Oh, I just read ahead and didn't realize you haven't seen this year's episodes so I won't tell you anything.
One of my favorites which you probably have seen was when Dr. Stephanie moved in and Sheldon had Leonard have her sign that agreement. That one was a riot, especially when she got him to stop talking.

Restaurant Wars is one of the most popular show and this season's installment is no exception.
