The Talented Mr MacFarlane
Thursday, December 17, 2009 6:45:42 PM
There are more people in the public eye than ever. Reality shows, serials, movies - whatever - they are coming thicker and faster (giggety) than ever before. It's hard to find the diamonds in all the rough, but it seems all the more special when there's so much average "talent" out there.
Me, I've got high standards when it comes to truly appreciating a person on their talents alone. Sure, most half-decent actors have a certain forte within their field, but not many possess skills that are... Well, rare.
It's no secret that I love the show Family Guy, nor is it a secret that I love American Dad.
The creator of both shows is also the voice of like, half of the characters - and those voices can differ immensely.
Seth MacFarlane is the voice of many of the main and secondary characters, his sense of humour is wonderfully varied, satiric, offbeat... But again, this is not the reason for this post.
The reason is this: his musical talent.
MacFarlane has one of the most fantastic singing voices I've ever heard. I first realised this a few years ago when watching an old episode of Family Guy and I heard a song sung by the character, Brian. He's played in MacFarlane's natural voice, and it's a fantastic voice. I couldn't find a clip of the song I referenced, but you can sample Seth's standard singing voice by clicking here, and you'll hear the opening theme to Futurama's Wild Green Yonder, which Seth just did the song for.
There are a lot of musical references in his shows, and what amazed me was his seemingly natural ability to sing in character, with so many different characters and voices...
And then he took it one step further.
We got the DVD of season 8 of Family Guy a short time ago and in one episode, there's a song sung by MacFarlane in the character Stewie. You can listen to a Stewie song by clicking this link.
Again, not unusual. In fact, MacFarlane has often recorded songs in duet with himself - as two different characters. Sometimes three.. - but this is a step further...
MacFarlane as Stewie, imitating Bryan Adams.
Click here to watch the video.
Both Mik and I are amazed by this particular video, not to mention how funny it is. I would have loved to find more songs and samplings to show you just how varied his voices are, but I have limits to my resources as a phonie. There are a couple of songs he's done for the show with Frank Sinatra Jr - who adores him, by the way, and if you can find those, they're fun. Honestly though I'd just recommend you get thee some humour and culture, and buy the damn DVDs.

I'll have to find the VuClip version as my connection just isn't clean enough for streaming today!

I agree with you - he does have a good singing voice.
I have no idea how far they've gotten showing Family Guy here, but season 8 seems so far away...

Very cool. I heard both Brian Adams and Stewie at the same time!

Rose - I know that the American seasons are longer than the uk DVD released seasons... But I dunno. Season 8's my favourite so far. I'm totally smitten with his normal singing voice. Perhaps because people don't really classically sing anymore?
Darko - yeah, it's a pretty good impression. I'm amazed because he's doing another voice and then doing the impression. I've no idea how he does it.
Kiran - okay...
David - what do you mean? The fact that he's being Stewie who's trying to be Bryan Adams, or do you hear two seperate voices?

David - ah, exactly. I tried to explain this in a different way in the post but I don't think I made my point

Kiran - no worries, it just seemed a little odd for a first comment on a post

But it's not worth the hype for general browsing. It's only advantage is that it works with most flash video and some sites that were designed by people who still think that Microsoft's Internet Explorer is the only browser capable of displaying .jpg images.
