The Talented Mr MacFarlane

, ,

There are more people in the public eye than ever. Reality shows, serials, movies - whatever - they are coming thicker and faster (giggety) than ever before. It's hard to find the diamonds in all the rough, but it seems all the more special when there's so much average "talent" out there.

Me, I've got high standards when it comes to truly appreciating a person on their talents alone. Sure, most half-decent actors have a certain forte within their field, but not many possess skills that are... Well, rare.

It's no secret that I love the show Family Guy, nor is it a secret that I love American Dad.
The creator of both shows is also the voice of like, half of the characters - and those voices can differ immensely.
Seth MacFarlane is the voice of many of the main and secondary characters, his sense of humour is wonderfully varied, satiric, offbeat... But again, this is not the reason for this post.

The reason is this: his musical talent.
MacFarlane has one of the most fantastic singing voices I've ever heard. I first realised this a few years ago when watching an old episode of Family Guy and I heard a song sung by the character, Brian. He's played in MacFarlane's natural voice, and it's a fantastic voice. I couldn't find a clip of the song I referenced, but you can sample Seth's standard singing voice by clicking here, and you'll hear the opening theme to Futurama's Wild Green Yonder, which Seth just did the song for.

There are a lot of musical references in his shows, and what amazed me was his seemingly natural ability to sing in character, with so many different characters and voices...

And then he took it one step further.
We got the DVD of season 8 of Family Guy a short time ago and in one episode, there's a song sung by MacFarlane in the character Stewie. You can listen to a Stewie song by clicking this link.

Again, not unusual. In fact, MacFarlane has often recorded songs in duet with himself - as two different characters. Sometimes three.. - but this is a step further...
MacFarlane as Stewie, imitating Bryan Adams.
Click here to watch the video.
Both Mik and I are amazed by this particular video, not to mention how funny it is. I would have loved to find more songs and samplings to show you just how varied his voices are, but I have limits to my resources as a phonie. There are a couple of songs he's done for the show with Frank Sinatra Jr - who adores him, by the way, and if you can find those, they're fun. Honestly though I'd just recommend you get thee some humour and culture, and buy the damn DVDs.

lol How wonderfully cheesy!
I agree with you - he does have a good singing voice.
I have no idea how far they've gotten showing Family Guy here, but season 8 seems so far away...

At first moment I thought it IS Brian Adams bigeyes

Dark FurieFurie Thursday, December 17, 2009 10:03:13 PM

Weird isn't it. Stewie's voice is based on Rex Harrison (see the old My Fair Lady film) who sounds nothing like Bryan Adams, obviously. To mix both voices successfully is beyond talent.

When I read the title, this came to my mind.

lol

Very cool. I heard both Brian Adams and Stewie at the same time!

Spaggyj Friday, December 18, 2009 12:59:12 PM

Aadil - sorry, man.

Rose - I know that the American seasons are longer than the uk DVD released seasons... But I dunno. Season 8's my favourite so far. I'm totally smitten with his normal singing voice. Perhaps because people don't really classically sing anymore?

Darko - yeah, it's a pretty good impression. I'm amazed because he's doing another voice and then doing the impression. I've no idea how he does it.

Kiran - okay... smile .

David - what do you mean? The fact that he's being Stewie who's trying to be Bryan Adams, or do you hear two seperate voices?

KittyliciousZaphira Friday, December 18, 2009 1:04:55 PM

I love that vid, bigsmile and I agree, it's quite impressive how close his voice is to Bryan Adams'. up

Cleanclean Friday, December 18, 2009 1:05:50 PM

I can sort of hear Brian Adams when I think of the Brian Adams version of the song, and I can hear Stewie when I listen without trying to recall the Brian Adams version. Hard to explain ... regardless, he is very talented. smile

Spaggyj Friday, December 18, 2009 1:09:14 PM

Kitty - it's the fact that it's an impression of an impression that astounds me. The video is awesome I agree bigsmile .

David - ah, exactly. I tried to explain this in a different way in the post but I don't think I made my point lol . What you just wrote explains it better!

Cleanclean Friday, December 18, 2009 1:16:01 PM

Well that's all right, then. What I said made no sense to me ... p wink

Could be... I remember being pretty amazed by an episode with Frankie Jr. Brian can sing!

I haven't watched much American Dad (doesn't air here anymore). Is there singing there too?

KYrenKYren Friday, December 18, 2009 4:50:26 PM

Sorry for the off topic comment, Kim. Skyfire is not working on my phone. It keeps saying connecting but doesn't get connected. I can't watch the videos. down

Spaggyj Friday, December 18, 2009 4:59:25 PM

Rose - There are two Sinatra episodes now, which is cool. I think they work well together. Brian's pretty much Seth's normal voice - and yeah, there's singing in American Dad too. Stan's not far off from Seth/Brian, but he also sings in Roger's voice, which is pretty cool.

Kiran - no worries, it just seemed a little odd for a first comment on a post lol . Shame about the videos eh?

Dark FurieFurie Friday, December 18, 2009 5:19:16 PM

Rose, Frank Sinatra Junior has a major boy crush on Seth McFarlane. I'm a commentary fan on DVDs and he was doing one with Seth, and positively gushing over him. lol

r♡serose-marie Friday, December 18, 2009 9:35:34 PM

Come to think of it - I think I've actually seen a singing Roger. bigsmile

Awww, that sound sweet, Mik. Unless there were some awkward moments... left

Dark FurieFurie Friday, December 18, 2009 11:46:09 PM

It's one of the most embarrassing commentaries to listen to, mostly cause he doesn't know how he sounds. Constantly heaping praise on him, the show, anyone who's ever met him. scared

KYrenKYren Saturday, December 19, 2009 1:46:24 AM

I hope the next version of the skyfire works on my phone.
p The title of the post did remind me the poem, btw.

r♡serose-marie Saturday, December 19, 2009 11:26:36 AM

Awkward it is, then! lol

Mad Scientistqlue Saturday, December 19, 2009 6:24:36 PM

Skyfire should work right on any Symbian phone. left.
But it's not worth the hype for general browsing. It's only advantage is that it works with most flash video and some sites that were designed by people who still think that Microsoft's Internet Explorer is the only browser capable of displaying .jpg images. left.

Sounds great, although often Peter's character gets in the way of me enjoying Family Guy. Same thing happens with Homer in The Simpsons. Give me Futurama any day bigsmile

Spaggyj Sunday, January 3, 2010 4:16:50 PM

Oh, I think Peter's fantastic. I do know what you mean about both him and Homer, though lol . I can't wait for the first new season of Futurama wait
