Where I Live..

(Addition 1: Hamilton Rail Trail pics July 9, 2009)
First off, Hamilton is in the province of Ontario in the country of Canada. It's at the headwaters of Lake Ontario; and being at the edge of the Niagara Escarpment, this city has the distinction of being the waterfall capital of the world. As an example, Mt. Albion Falls is a 20 minute walk from my apartment.
This picture I took of a roaring Webster's Falls a few years ago is one of the best I've ever seen anywhere; notice the base of a rainbow on the lower right corner.
One of the interesting things about many of the falls here is the huge hole or crater burrowed by powerful water streams as glaciers melted and retreated. This picture has a melting hole that is well over 30m (100ft) across and cut back over 1km (over 2/3 mile) from the edge of the escarpment.
One of many, many conservation areas inside the Hamilton city limits.
Most of the conservation areas are linked together by the Bruce Trail. The Bruce Trail is over 800km (500mi) in length, stretching from Niagara Falls to Tobermory.
This is the view of my front door..
This is the view from my balcony in winter..
Hamilton is more popularly known as "Steeltown" due to the long history of steel making giants Stelco and Dofasco (but currently known as U.S. Steel - Hamilton and Arcelor-Mittal). If you download and view the split skyline photo below, much of Hamilton's waterfront is dominated by the piers and plants of these two companies.
A place I spend a lot of time is my church. My principal work there is audio/visual and all things related to that. This is me posing at the sound booth I designed and built a few years ago.
Now all of this doesn't include McMaster University, McMaster Hospital, The Hamilton Tiger Cats (a professional football team) or the Royal Botanical Gardens. More on these a little later...

One interesting man-made feature very near where I live is the Hamilton Rail Trail. It's an abandoned railway line that travels along the edge of the Niagara Escarpment from downtown to within 0.5 km of my apartment. The rails and gravel have been removed and the bed paved over to provide almost 5kms of very smooth pathway. The grade is very gradual and scenic lookouts are placed every now and again. Becuase I haven't bicycled in a long time, my legs were really hurting.
Here's a shot of the trail near a lookout.
A shot from the lookout toward Hamilton Harbour.
A picture of steps installed to climb up the escarpment. There are tracks on the outer edges of the steps for people to roll their bicycles up or down. This is one part of the steps going from halfway to the base...
Going from halfway to the top of the escarpment...

I love the waterfall! So pretty. I didn't realize you lived so closely to a large lake. And I agree with ShallowMuse, it looks REALLY cold in your winter photos. bbbrrrrrr!

Peer pressure!
In a couple months you'll experience where I live first hand!
Oohh..I didn't realize Hamilton was on a 'corner' like that.
You really don't get that impression when you are driving through! Did you see me waving when I drove through on the way to Thorold!

What you may have missed is Cheryl's comment, "In a couple months you'll experience where I live first hand!" What she means is this: I plan to visit her home and farm near Ottawa at the end of July. To go to the first (and closest) person who got me involved in the whole Opera Community back in 2007. It's a crazy idea to actually visit my Opera friends - but then, why not? I've been thinkin' about how to visit the other regulars....U.S.A., Britain, Chzekoslovakia, S.A. It's a lofty goal and one worth doing, I think.
That waterfall is one of over 100 waterfalls and cascades in the immediate city of Hamilton. The skyline picture is taken on the top edge of the Niagara Escarpment (known as "The Mountain" by locals). It rises over 100m (330ft) above the lower level of the city in most places. More geography information can be found at http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Geography_of_Hamilton,_Ontario.
Cheryl: if you take the panoramic view of Hamilton and go to the third pane, I think you're waving as you were driving over the Burlington Skyway.
Lindsay and Bianca: the amount of snow fools you into thinking it was cold. It's usually not too bad around here. It does get cold where Cheryl lives.... :brrr:
Lindsay: it was just nice to get together as a family. We usually don't get each other outlandish presents. It's enough that we physically get together in one location.

No, downbytheseaside, you did not get a good look at the natural beauty of the area by going over the Skyway Bridge along the QEW (Queen Elizabeth Way). Truth be told, when I moved here 6-1/2 years ago, I didn't know much about the area either. But I've since found out my neighbourhood is quickly accessible to great bicycle paths and parks - and it's a 15 minute walk to my church! Wouldn't want to be anywhere else.
Garlingmatthews, Canada is a BIIIIIG country! At 100km/h, it would take over 2 days to go non-stop from one coast to the other! Pick the places you want to go carefully.
Bianca, I will wait until you get some pics of Cape Town in summer glory. Not sure what kind of "fun" you hear of Canadians on the tele around your place - unless it has to do with us being nauseatingly polite (that's rapidly changing). Perhaps the movie Canadian Bacon will provide a humorous insight into the relations between Canada and the USA. Much of that film was shot in Hamilton - and never credited!! Rrrrr....
So whaddya think, Lindsay, your place next year? I'll break my vow I made almost 30 years ago and take up golf again - with an instructor this time.

Don't know about Unite or if you need dedicated port forwarding. I figure it would be something that should run in a general way. With over 2 million members, I don't think they would set it up in such a way to need special router configurations. I've toyed with Ubuntu (you running 8.10 by now?), but am not really familiar with Linux or Unix OS.
If you go to the 'Forums' section, you will find a dedicated section on the Unite feature system. I don't plan on using it.
