Adding Friends on Opera

, ,

This is now going to be my standard response to people who genuinely want to add me as their Opera friend. I usually check a person's blog first thing to determine if they're schiesters or not. Those of us who have been around awhile can probably relate to this.

Hello Opera member,
I'm flattered you would want to add me as your friend here at the Opera community. These requests come in from time to time and I see some common threads from people who don't "get" what Opera is about.

It's not a friend acquisition competition.
It's not about little bits of information of what you do every moment of the day.
It's not a place to hock your business idea.
It's not a site to display graphic pornography.

It is about people sharing about their lives - whether good or bad.
It is about having others care for you when the chips are down.
It is about celebration for joyous events and genuine praise for others' talents.
It is about learning of other people, cultures and customs from around the world.
It is about finding commonality among other humans who live on this planet - and appreciating it.

So I offer these suggestions to you and anyone else who wants to be my friend:
Stay awhile. Don't just create an account and then bugger off.
Write something. Anything. As much or little as you feel comfortable with.
Add a picture to go with what you're writing. It usually helps the rest of us understand.
When I know more of who you are, I would be happy to add you onto my friend's list - because then we can really be friends.

Check out this person's blog to get an idea of what I'm talking about.
http://my.opera.com/someone-who-has-a-really-good-blog/blog
With warm regards,
Henry
P.S.: because of abuses in the past by idiots and unscrupulous people, I only accept e-mail from those on my friends list. Sorry. If there is progress on the suggestions mentioned above, we'll get to know each other much better.

I get annoyed with the requests as well. So many never post a comment or anything. Now I refuse to add anyone who does not comment and hang around.

lixxylu 8. October 2009, 18:06

Most just seem to want to date me/marry me/impregnate me/have me get them a visa...but i would never add anyone unless i at least somewhat know them...or we're trading cards baby!

Hermitess 8. October 2009, 20:23

Well Lucy, I never get all of those offers :frown:

Mostly just "hi" or uh, well that is all they usually say!
I never even respond... I'm a snob like that.

SpicyFlier 8. October 2009, 21:43

'Tis true Lixxylu: the Trade Card Gang is a club within a club. But we still had to "rub shoulders", so to speak.

P.S.: most of my "offers" (until I set my e-mail to the friends-only setting) were to visit porn postings. Sometimes, someone set up an Opera profile to sell me something :yuck:. Most times, if I checked out a profile, the Opera member was already banned.

SpicyFlier 9. October 2009, 12:01

Update Oct. 14 - Well now, this comment is kind of "hanging in mid-air", so to speak. It seems the person who this was referring to has just recently been banned.
Reason: unknown.

You're right Donnellc, it doesn't work. It's fictitious (for how long, I don't know...). I have a few blogggers in mind who give a real taste of what blogging here on Opera is all about. I don't mind adding their blog sites to a response. A person's real Opera name is substituted for "Opera member" too.

I've been using the Opera web browser since 2001 and have been part of the community since 2007. Opera's "Member of the Week", or MOTW, is what got me started. You will almost always find good people and blogs featured there. When I began, there were only about 500,000 members world wide. Now it's over 2 million! The dark side of this has been bad people creating fake accounts and pushing all sorts of crap on those of us who want to remain true to the original Opera Community vision and their TOS (Terms of Service).

By your comment, you understand the reason for this post - and I hope you remain true to that. Thanks.

lixxylu 9. October 2009, 19:20

http://my.opera.com/i-think-lucy-is-like-sooo-cool/blog

 :D

and when do i get this shoulder massage you speak of??

SpicyFlier 10. October 2009, 03:06

As soon as I book a plane ticket to the U.K....
But it's not really about a shoulder massage. Check here: http://www.usingenglish.com/reference/idioms/rub+shoulders.html I like to think of all of my friends as more famous than myself. :D

Hermitess 10. October 2009, 05:59

 Thanks Henry but I'm only famous to my doggies!

lixxylu 10. October 2009, 17:59

yeah i know the term, i just thought i'd waggle a free massage out of it :D

SpicyFlier 11. October 2009, 04:21

Lucy, you are coy.....

Moirahall 14. October 2009, 22:11

I just drifted onto your page and had a wee read at your blog.

Oh how I wish I had read this blog when I joined opera at first. It would have helped me lots.

At first when I joined I was bombarded with invitations that I accepted from so called people who wanted to become friends with me.
One week into my membership and 25 proposals of marriage and two to become a mummy to some man`s daughter, who had bought me a gift and wanted me to move to the USA.

I went through my friends list and deleted all of these people who had weird notions about me.

Now I have people I like and make and keep contact with through blogs and mails.

I learned the hard way, but now love my opera. And use it as it is intended to be. And I will not accept friends until have built up some communication with them first.

SpicyFlier 15. October 2009, 03:05

Hi Moira!
Yeah...I think all of us who have stuck around have been jaded by "crazy-makers" at one time or another. Have you discovered the 'friends only' setting for your e-mail yet?

Unfortunately, this post went up after you had signed on to My Opera, so it wouldn't have done you much good. I think it's the bright blonde hair that attracts many men... :D

I'm glad you like it here. After over two years, I wouldn't trade it for Facebook or Twitter or whatever else there may be. It's a great virtual canvas for writing and pictures - with no stupid adverts and applications!!! :furious:
With warm Operatic regards,
Henry

Hermitess 15. October 2009, 04:51

Hey, no one ever asked me to marry them. I don't get many pm's anyway.

:sst: Is it my breath?

p:

Moirahall 15. October 2009, 08:11

Henry, I have a facebook account, however it is very different and very commercial and actually full of viruses, hence I never use it anymore.
I also have a bebo which I find is full of twenty some-things speaking some weird language that I really do not understand such as ` ye awrite man ` and other phrases I just do not like. Maybe something to do with me being Scottish and our Scottish slang.

Yes, I have discovered that the personal settings on opera and it helps. It`s good to be in control of who can get in touch.

I really have encountered some nutters on opera. But all under control now.

Moirahall 15. October 2009, 08:14

Hermitess,

You look like a nice well behaved dog, with sweet smelling breath.

So will you marry me?

There does that make you feel better ?

  p:

SpicyFlier 15. October 2009, 11:11

Moira: You have caught on to taking control of your blog very quickly. Any "dumb blonde" jokes about you and those folks will have to be dealin' with me! :knight:

If you knew Lindsay's dogs, you may want to retract the phrase "You look like a nice well behaved dog, with sweet smelling breath." :faint: p: :D

But that aside, and what I've discovered about her so far, would you marry me Lindsay?

Moirahall 15. October 2009, 11:21

wow she is catching up - two proposals in the one day for Lindsay - Well done, you are catching up. shame about the dogs

ps- I am used to the dumb blonde jokes - thick skinned and it`s just as well cause I get plenty of them. Not just here, but at work too   All in the name of fun and a wee laugh

Hermitess 15. October 2009, 12:51

I feel so special! Thanks Guys!

:sst: I'm already married soooo ... I'm gonna have to pass right now. Ask me again if I get divorced.

 @ Henry My dogs get their teeth cleaned! p:

Moirahall 15. October 2009, 13:19

Lindsay, that`s nice your feeling special.

And at least now you have two new things to talk about.
Being proposed to twice in the one day. And by both sexes he he

 And you already being married.

Hermitess 15. October 2009, 13:49

 Very True! I have universal appeal

Hermitess 15. October 2009, 13:51

Oh and just FYI, if I were to take either of you up on that proposal, you must know...

Marry me, marry my dogs!  We are a package deal. :D

Moirahall 15. October 2009, 13:57

Well - I`ll have to pass on that one.

Over to you Henry?

:D

Hermitess 15. October 2009, 17:31

 Not a dog person? They are small and cute. :D

Moirahall 15. October 2009, 18:00

And hairy - which clings to black clothes.I Like other people`s though as long as their not in my house :frown:

Hermitess 15. October 2009, 20:41

Yes, and mine are mostly white! I use a no-shed shampoo and brush them regularly outdoors. That helps a great deal. Although I gave up on dark colored clothing because of that. I use the sticky roller thing though to get off hair if I need too  I'm prepared for all sorts of situations! p:

Fine fine, retract your proposal. awww I see you were just toying with my emotions. I'm delicate so I will need lots of caramel and buttercream icing to heal.

Moirahall 15. October 2009, 20:50

Oh dear. Hairy dogs. In all honesty I had a very hairy dog from a puppy till she was 15, sadly a tumour meant we had to have her put to sleep. The saddest day of my life so far. I was so brave and stayed with her, closed her eyes and walked away an emotional wreck. I stayed like that for two weeks, that was 5 years ago. I have thought many times about getting another wee dog, but I just can`t. and I feel you get far too attached to them. i love dogs. And I missed her so much. The one thing I never missed was those hairs. But if I could I would have her back hairs and all. aw if only.

:frown: I hope you heal soon and maybe Henry will change his mind

Hermitess 15. October 2009, 22:19

 I have been comforting myself with sweets.

Death of a pet is so very sad. :frown: I've never not had a dog or some other pet. It's harder on me to have one die and just have the empty space to remind me than to go ahead after a little while and get another dog.

Pet hair really doesn't bother me as long as I'm not covered in it. I grew up on a horse and hiking in the woods with my dogs and playing with the endless kittens we seemed to have. So an outfit without some animal hair just isn't complete for me. :D

Moirahall 15. October 2009, 22:42

You will get fat

Pet`s are just so loyal and lovable. I could easy fall in love with another, but decided not to. And my working hours are long. it would not be fair to leave a pet alone . So I`m best to stay dogless, for now anyway

SpicyFlier 15. October 2009, 23:54

Well...it seems like we are all getting along just fine!

As for the marriage thing Lindsay, we'll just have to wait. You're busy with your own relationship and it seems I'm getting my feet wet in the female relationship area here - which is very unusual for me!

Hermitess 16. October 2009, 06:09

wait... I'm gonna get FAT? :eyes: p:

Oh Fine Henry, I supposed it would get complicated, what with you dating and my being already married and all. Plus not living in the same country. sheesh, you people sure are picky !

:D

SpicyFlier 16. October 2009, 07:07

Nope. Just practical.. p:

ShallowMuse 16. October 2009, 16:04

*sob* Will someone marry ME?!! feeling awfully left out here since i too have not received any proposals.. I just laugh so much at the ridiculous broken English! Ok they cant help it but still. its hilarious.
i completely agree with this post, hear hear!

(and we should totally get jackets for the TCG)

Hermitess 16. October 2009, 16:59

OOOO Jackets!

Well I had TWO proposals yesterday and BOTH got retracted. :frown: That may be worse than none at all.

*licks the bottom of the icing tub*

ShallowMuse 16. October 2009, 17:01

Retracted? As in like, 'Oh sorry love i made a mistake i actually DONT want to marry you it turns out'? :eyes:

Moirahall 16. October 2009, 20:44

aww but we still care, don`t we Henry ?

Hermitess 16. October 2009, 21:35

Yeah, pretty much Bianca.
 I feel so, so, naked and raw! So, So disposed!

 ok maybe not. I have a large Hispanic/Native American man to break my fall. :D

Hermitess 16. October 2009, 21:37

Bianca -- They don't want my DOGS. :eyes:

WHO couldn't want my cutie pups?!! Just because Bella looks crazy and rabid in the avatar doesn't mean she is, she was yawning! Honest!

Moirahall 16. October 2009, 21:38

Aw but remember we do still care - don`t we Henry, where are you Henry, i need your input

Hermitess 16. October 2009, 21:41

Henry is probably taking a nap right about now. :left:

See I totally already know your routine anyway.

Fine, *sniff* I'll be.. be... sorry, I'll be ok....

SpicyFlier 17. October 2009, 02:13

Hey - I just got back home from doing a sound tech training seminar for some guys from another church (which was right after work - no chance to keep up with the goings on here - it's 10pm now!).

I agree with Moira: we do care - deeply (and both Bianca and Lindsay know it by my long personal letters on delicate subject matters). Lindsay, I think your dogs are very cute - I had their photo on my laptop background for a period of time. Bianca: did you see my post on this past weekend's wedding of my co-worker? It was the bestestest wedding I had ever been to - ever!! The photos by the photographer and his wife were the best I have ever seen - ever!! I'm so tempted to publish them to a new photo album...

After seeing how my co-worker and her husband got together over the past couple of years, I doubt I could accept anything less than that kind of romance. Oh my goodness! I could listen to their stories over and over again.

Hermitess 17. October 2009, 06:18

What?!! We should be your first priority!
*gives Henry the stink eye*

 I know you care Henry. :D I'm just being a brat.

This must be some romance! I missed that wedding post. :frown: I will go look for it.

lovinmalamutes 23. October 2009, 13:22

Henry this is a great post. I wasn't even notified. What is up with this not being notified? You are definitely one I want to be notified on!

I'm glad I decided to see what you have been up to or I wouldn't have found this post. I will be adding this to my favorite's as everyone should read this.

I too had alot of bizarre friends request. Um.... I haven't gotten any proposals either. :frown: But some of the request I have gotten shouldn't be discussed where children might read. I have to say I was very offended by them. I am a good girl and don't appreciate the sicko's out there.:irked:

I hope all is going well for you, and you are happy. :D
I'll try not to be such a stranger. It just seems I can hardly keep up with all that is going on. I'm forever trying to work through my notices, never to get to the end of them. :eyes:

God be with you ALWAYS!!!

Hermitess 23. October 2009, 13:29

*doesn't get naughty notices either*

:left:

Dang, no marriage proposals or kinky stuff. I must not come across well.

lovinmalamutes 23. October 2009, 14:16

They are always canned comments, or links to something, of which I have never clicked on. Some even pretend they already know you.:yikes: :insane:

I'm sure they are afraid of your dogs.p:

Moirahall 23. October 2009, 14:33

Well, I have been proposed to. And asked to be a Mummy to a nine year old`s daughter. I must dig back that email for you`s to have a wee nip at he he  I`ll post iton here later

But never had the kinky stuff or naughty notices :frown: I feel like you did last week L :o:   and jealous!!!

Moirahall 23. October 2009, 14:39

As promised girls - You can imagine my reaction to this - BLOCK!

ShallowMuse 23. October 2009, 18:04

:yikes: EEEEEK! my goodness thats creepy! where was this person from? 'send me mobile number'.. tja, right! :ko:

SpicyFlier 23. October 2009, 22:43

Oh yeah; I should have included this comment with the general notes above: "never ever under ANY circumstances give ANY personal information or phone numbers!" (it almost happened to someone I know)

None of this creepy crappy stuff seemed to be happening until early 2008. Like some idiot people had already flooded Yahoo, Blogspot and Google and whoever. I hope you ladies have your e-mail notices set to "friends only". Wouldn't want any of y'all to get traumatized any more than we do to each other... p:

Don't know what to say about the notices, Doris.
But just drop on by!!!

Moirahall 23. October 2009, 23:08
