Visiting For Real

Many times we never meet someone we know through the internet. This year it actually happened and a few pics were taken of that event. Click the picture below to see more.

Vacation – Day 8

,

Most of the morning was spent re-writing and posting overdue log posts. Checked out of the motel at 11:00am and packed the car.

Stopped into Timmy Ho's on the way out of Arnprior and headed back to Pakenham. It's a beautiful, though slightly cool, sunny day; and I wanted to get a picture of the stone 5-arch bridge over the small Mississippi River. I get there just before noon and park in a spot where I can have some shade. I kick off my shoes and soak my feel in the cool, fast-flowing water on one of the rocky ledges. So nice and refreshing. It's so calming watching the water quickly spill over the stepped ledges and bubble it's way down stream (click on the picture to view my photo album). Ottawa can wait a little longer while I'm scribbling away in my note pad....

Ottawa as a city is very nice. The best part is the huge network of bicycle paths all around the city. I take photos of the Parliament buildings, the Supreme Court building, the Rideau Canal and some of the little bridges. There is a sense of awe standing in front of the buildings where decisions are made that affect the lives of every Canadian. I can't help but feel the overwhelming sense of responsibility to this country as a nation. Perhaps that is easy to forget when you are in the cesspool all the time. Or maybe it's the sense of power that some people crave all the time.

I never really realized that the Prime Minister's official residence, 24 Sussex Drive, and Rideau Hall, the Canadian Governor General's residence, are literally across the street from each other. It also seemed rather odd to me that the French Embassy is two doors down from 24 Sussex Drive.

I grab another Subway dinner and coffee at Bridgehead around 7:00pm before heading out to 417 and eventually back to Hamilton. Things are moving along fine until about 100kms outside of Toronto on the 401. Traffic is already stopped and it's 10:00pm!! I pull off on County Road 32 east of Coburg and find a place to sleep in the car. My truck-driving brother-in-law always said it's best to go through Toronto in the middle of the night. I set the alarm for 3:00am. At 2:00am I relieve myself; than head off like a bullet, with mosquitoes in my wake. It's an uneventful drive through the night and I pull into my apartment parking lot at 4:30am. Aaahhh...home. I sleep for 3 more hours and drop the car off at the rental office before heading down the street to work. Vacation is now officially over.

Vacation – Day 7

,

Woke up at 9:00am. Kind of late to get ready to to the Baxter's church in Arnprior—The Rock. I'm told it used to be a strip club. Now it's nicely converted and I enjoy the service. The music was good and their sound equipment is first-rate for a church their size. It's certainly a better set-up than ours back home.

Picked up lunch at Subway. Watched “The Matrix” in the afternoon. Good flick. Haven't seen it in years. Had a nap. Took a bicycle tour of Arnprior and some trails. Very nice.

At the very end of one trail a fellow drove up in an older minivan. His name was Rob. He used to work at the Chalk River nuclear facility. It's world renowned for making isotopes for medical nuclear testing and radiation treatment. Rob gave me an inside education on the bad press that facility has been getting of late. It seems the real issue is the divesting of people who really do the work and creating too much paperwork that is being handled by too many managers. Such common practice today.

Vacation – Day 6

,

Woke up at 7:30am. Tried the wireless internet again. Nothing. The whole issue is the comparison with the Avon & John B&B in Stratford, Ontario. I couldn't recommend that one highly enough. For the same money per person, my daughter and I were treated like royalty in the absolutely beautiful surroundings of a restored Edwardian home with all original artwork around the home. The fresh hand-made breakfasts were absolutely divine and croissants that shredded into lovely flakes at the mere touch of a fork. For an experience like that again...

Vacation – Day 5

,

Woke up at 6:30am (funny how I am waking up long before the alarm most days...). Coffee and oatmeal for breakfast. Scrambled to get some more touristy information about Ottawa and print it out to take along. Won't be able to do everything, but it provides lots of options to fill the time. Located Sears department store near B&B (see the end of yesterday's post) and mapped it.

Vacation – Day 4

,

Woke up at 6:30am; then 7:30. Sent another address to Trade Card Gang member. I have my concept ready to go for August! It will be like personal postcards to the world.

Made coffee and oatmeal. Began searching maps for places to go tomorrow in Toronto area before heading to Ottawa. Tried to confirm reservation at B&B by phone since no response to e-mail. Couldn't leave a message since phone mailbox was full – and the number was for another Christian business run by the same people! Note to self: have things ready in case I'm sleeping in my rental car for three nights.

Called a couple of people to return calls made the last few days. Typed up my assessment for the church sound system I was doing work on the past two days. Went back to my own church and put together the sound board and made sure all the controls and inputs worked properly. Mmmm...I love the sound of a nice audio system playing good music. Can't say the same for the other place – yet.

I also began the process of establishing a scholarship or bursary for church sound technicians at a Bible College/Seminary. This college is about an hour from here. There are just not enough people who care about proper presentation of sound at churches these days. I really want to encourage men and women at local churches to think of their work as necessary as having a worship team and good singers. Hopefully this money will get that going and have it perpetuated through my will.

Went to the local mall to look for a couple of new dress shirts, jeans and a tie for this weekend's trip. Visiting is great excuse to go shopping! Who wants to show up in worn out grubbies?! Ate at Kentucky Fried Chicken for a treat. Mmmm....KFC. This evening is packing and having it all ready to go in the morning. Less then 24 hours to head to Ottawa!

Attention shoppers! So Sears may not be your place to buy clothes to make a fashion statement. But what if you buy items on sale? What if the sales clerks scan your stuff and say, “If you pick this up first thing before you head out of town, you'll get another 30% off from the sale price. How about we just hold this until tomorrow morning, alright?”

Well.....I don't know...... (yah, right! I'll wait!!)

“And then if you find a Sears up there, just bring in the clothing with your receipt and they'll adjust the prices down even further. See these jeans? They will be 40% off the regular price in two days.”

No way! Really?! The money saved on the clothing purchases will almost buy the gas for the trip!

“Mmm, hmm....By the way, those are very nice ties you picked out.”

Vacation – Day 3

,

Woke up at 6:00am. Sent a reply message to ShallowMuse about involvement in a drawing club. Wow; never been specifically asked to be a part of something before. For me, life as a social force began at 40-ish (mostly “-ish”). Began prepping for day by looking up music testing software and thinking about scheduling today's time. Gonna be busy.

Made spaghetti and coffee with a root beer chaser. Was looking at a devotional piece this morning. It had to do with Proverbs 12:15; about a wise man listening to advice. There were 10 specific things that receptive, mature and emotionally/spiritually growing people do. Interestingly enough, there was a parallel in the notes section of my study Bible this morning. Confirmation; cool.

Went to my own church and attempted to get more information on how to fix our sound board. In the end, I decided it would be better to physically drive it to the national service depot on the way to Ottawa.

Next thing: get to the church I was at yesterday to do some more testing and planning on improvements. A fellow from my church was willing to drive me there. Shaweet!! Saved me cycling there with a ton of gear! Their main sound technicians were there and we talked shop about how they do things and particular (people) problems they have. Stumbled across some other issues with their system. Send in the sound reinforcements!! August 22-23 will be a real change to how their sound is. I'm sure they will love what I have planned. The pastor drove me back to my own church (I'm slow, but I try to be thorough...). Double shaweet!! Got home for a dinner and a nap.

I made a list of things I wanted to accomplish on my vacation. It's the end of day 3 and I have finished 1 of 9!! Gotta make some plans for my Ottawa trip Friday. Crunch time... :ninja:

Vacation – Day 2

,

Woke up at 6:00am. Updated yesterday's blog with pictures and a few sentences. Read Bianca's e-mail about Henry Street just around the corner from her house. I think Italy would be the only place where Bianca Street would be readily found.

Made coffee and oatmeal. Was looking in John chapter 7 this morning. A recurring theme has been “the right time”. God's timing for His Answer is perfect—even in an imperfect world. There are so many examples of things happening at the exact moment they are supposed to happen. Noah, Moses, Joseph, Paul, Peter—even me! When we think our lives have become pockmarked with disaster, the Heavenly Father can make it all work so that only He can take the credit.

My alarm went off at 7:30am (so what if I'm awake; it has to be set for tomorrow anyway). Took a shower and got ready to sit in a lawn chair on the grass of the “front lawn” of my apartment building. Had coffee and book in hand along with a notepad. Began reading from the book. Was specifically waiting for a lady to walk by on her way to work (or wherever). She lives three buildings down the street. We have very casually introduced ourselves during brief conversations either on the bus or walking to our apartments. She has a very sweet temperament and warm smile. She has nice taste in clothes and dresses well. My real purpose was to get her phone number so we could get together for coffee some time. Don't know why I want to know more about her, but I do. She walked by at 8:10am and I got her number—but she said to call her at the end of August since she was preparing for exams (I'm thinkin', “Who does exams in August?”). That's OK; she seems the type worth waiting for.

Did the sermon editing from last Sunday and posted it to our church's computer.

Went to a church and began detailing their sound system to recommend improvements in equipment and procedures. It's a process that began last summer with contacting the pastor. Only now is there time to carefully go over things and prepare for a Sunday as a guest sound technician.

**********************************************

Took SOOOO long with the church sound system! Came across some surprises – some of which were good ones! Thankfully, one of the congregation members gave me a ride to a coffee place where I was meeting the drummer of our church for a drink. We chatted about life, music and everything in between. Got home and checked e-mails. Watched the final two episodes of ER—again.

Vacation – Day 1

,

Today I woke up very sore. I made a cup of coffee and oatmeal and read John 6 for devotions. Jesus is declaring he is The Bread of Life. We are to "eat" of his flesh and "drink" of his blood to participate in that life. His life is more needed to our living than actual food or drink. At 8:30am, an e-mail came from our pastor that a man from our church had a heart attack last Thursday. A stent shunt was put through a completely clogged artery. The fellow was totally clean and fit. His genetics played the major role: the man's father also died of heart failure.

The previous evening was spent pushing water around in the basement of our church to get it all out the drain. Our church is having an extension built on the west side. We had a torrential rainfall yesterday afternoon. The drains and weeping tile around the church couldn't get the water away fast enough from the open basement section of the extension. There is an access door to the basement of the original church building. The rainwater poured through the doorway (see arrow). There was about an inch of water and silt covering over 1000 square feet.

It also was in the storage rooms.

The pastor was on vacation out of town. I called a handful of others with no success. I had to push the water with a large dust broom to a floor drain surrounded with tea towels. Push, push, splash, splash, push, push, splash, splash. It finally got done and I set up some fans to help evaporate any other stagnant water. The pastor checked it out this morning and commended the work. It could've been worse if left longer.

Dropped CDs off at the library. Went to the bank and got money out for a car rental for this upcoming weekend to Ottawa, Canada's national capital. Didn't think I could rent a car with a cash deposit, but it all seems good with the extra paperwork they needed for a credit check.

I went back to the church and finally tackled the job of fixing our church's sound board (after having a can of 'Italian Wedding' soup with some granola bars). One input line had shorted (or something) a couple of years ago and hasn't worked since. I ripped it apart and checked some circuits according to the schematics sent by the manufacturer. It all seemed good. Have to call back and check with a technician for other options. I may have to drop it off for repair in a city on the way to Cheryl's (DuckyChickenLady) this Friday.

Went home and microwaved another can of 'Italian Wedding' soup. Yummy! Enjoying some more footage of ER – First Season. Found a screwdriver that was misplaced yesterday.

It's been a busy, good and productive day.

P.S.: I am SO glad I am not in a basement apartment in my building. Those poor folks were flooded with many inches of water, according to my super. She's been trying to clean it up for over 24 hours now.

Citizen. Bike. (Part 1)

, ,

Yesterday I finally did it. Used a big chunk of my paycheque to purchase what I hope to be a long-term investment: a folding bicycle.

Why a folding bicycle, you ask?

About 2 years ago the car I owned finally bit the dust. No money to buy another. Been using public transit ever since – including highway buses to visit my parents who live 1.5 hours away (or 2.5 hours by highway bus). A kind fellow from church gave me his bicycle to use on decent days to get around. Last year a pedal crank kept working loose and there seemed no way to fix it without a tear-down and sink some money into it. Also, being a large-framed bicycle, it was difficult to transport anywhere. Our city buses here all have bicycle racks on their fronts, but I didn't like the idea of putting those spindley wheels in the huge channels. It's just been sitting on my balcony since last fall.

Winter has come and gone here in Canada and I had no bicycle to get around on once the weather got warmer. I'm also planning to visit Cheryl (aka DuckyChickenLady) in the Ottawa area in a month's time. I'd like to do some sight-seeing around our nation's capital. Here's the catch: only bicycles in boxes (or some other container) can be taken on highway buses. A full-framed bicycle is too big, really. I called a couple of local bicycle shops and their prices for folding bicycles began at CND $400! I began scouring the internet for folding bicycles and came across Citizen Bike http://www.citizenbike.com/ . It's one of the few even made in North America. I liked the style and the folding mechanisms. Being an engineering type, the folding mechanisms would be particularly important. The steel framed model appealed to me because of colour choices, fenders and carrying rack. Accessories included a bag for the rack and a carrying bag for the whole bicycle. Total cost for this – including shipping to Canada – is less than CND $400.

So: a folding bicycle for regular fair-weather transportation and it can easily be taken along for long trips to provide local transportation. I believe it's being shipped today.
