Face forward - even if not moving forward

What's In Your Cereal?

, ,

A couple of weeks ago, a local store had Kellogg's Just Right cereal on sale. I rarely buy boxed cereals. What caught my eye was the long list of nutrients on the side of the box (c'mon, you read them - yeah you). It impressed me so much - and tasted good - I went back and bought the remaining 3 boxes on the shelf! Like a multi-vitamin in every box. Just add milk!

But the amounts are useless, except for iron, and milk inhibits iron absorption. Being a vegetarian means being a nutrition nerd!

SpicyFlier 1. November 2009, 15:24

I use powdered skim milk. Any better? I am not a nutrition nerd at all. At least it has more nutritional ingredients than the stuff I usually buy...

garlingmatthews 1. November 2009, 15:27

Noooooo. I doubt that much survives the powdering process. Fresh whole milk!

Ignore me. I really am a nutrition nerd.

SpicyFlier 1. November 2009, 15:33

Perhaps that's why Vitamin A & D are added.... :right:
At least the Calcium is preserved!

garlingmatthews 1. November 2009, 15:36

 True enough.

ShallowMuse 1. November 2009, 17:29

i dont read nutrition labels on cereal boxes, i just read to see what the free gifts are inside! i'm a sucker for spoons that change colour when you dip it in the milk! p:
and those are ALOT of added benefits!

garlingmatthews 1. November 2009, 17:34

WOW! I'm sold!!! I get ecological flakes from Coop (of course).

Hermitess 1. November 2009, 21:37

*swoops in after a 2 day hiatus*

:left:

Oh jeez... I eat the organic granola  Then I recycle the box and the milk container. Do I get my nerd status yet?

lixxylu 1. November 2009, 21:42

Why is there so much emphasis on "Source of Fibre"
You Canadians constipated?

Hermitess 1. November 2009, 22:23

Americans must be too. The word fiber blares off of everything these days! Yogurt WITH FIBER. Sugar NOW WITH 1g FIBER per packet. Cookies WITH FIBER... you get the idea. Homer: Doh!

lixxylu 1. November 2009, 22:31

Cookies with Fibre... Is this a way to justify the eating of naughty foods? I might try that.

"But this is double layer chocolate cake with FIBRE"

SpicyFlier 2. November 2009, 00:34

Lindsay, Gavin may be the only qualified nutritionist nerd. At least, that's what he claims....

Lucy, lets just say we don't get to the loo as often as we should.
Perhaps the following picture may help your situation:

garlingmatthews 2. November 2009, 05:02

The English, durring Victorian times, realised that fibre had no nutritional value per se, and completely eliminated it from their diet, with predictable results. Sometimes, being very smart is a serious flaw.

Yay, we can be nerds together! :D

I never said expert! :D

ShallowMuse 2. November 2009, 07:12

Nerds with magical colour changing spoons!! (although they only come in the 'fun' cereals :frown: not all this fibre induced stuff.)

garlingmatthews 2. November 2009, 08:43

We can get our fibre by stealing Lucy's cookies!

lixxylu 2. November 2009, 12:46

Oooh i see. Steal my fibre cookies will you!
I had lots of magic spoons, cause i ate lots of chocolate iced hoops  You think they would be put in healthy cereals to get kids to eat healthy stuff though? It wouldn't of worked on me but still :D ...

ShallowMuse 2. November 2009, 13:16

And the nutritionists at Kellogs went, 'Let us make a cereal from broccoli and bean sprouts! Fiber all around!'
And the marketing team went 'We're resigning! The magic spoons will NEVER work on that!'

Hermitess 2. November 2009, 14:57

Yeah, the spoons weren't magic! Or...eh... wait. nervous

I feel a fiber inspiration coming... and NO I don't mean a trip to the toilet. I mean a post

ShallowMuse 2. November 2009, 15:06

 BWAHAHAHA!
We sound like a bunch of geriatrics, you do know this, since we're discussing fiber and bowel movement. Whats next, prunes?!

Hermitess 2. November 2009, 15:26

lixxylu 2. November 2009, 15:54

ShallowMuse 2. November 2009, 16:09

ShallowMuse 2. November 2009, 16:10

garlingmatthews 2. November 2009, 16:10

...and a packet of Hobnobs for me  :sst:

lixxylu 2. November 2009, 16:19

Prunes in bulk sounds dangerous but i like!

Hermitess 2. November 2009, 17:18
