Sorry to hear of your problem....Ever thought of trying Linux?

Kimberly 6. January 2009, 03:00

i wish i knew where i could buy a different OS than this fkn windows BS

Well, those happenings made me notice something: all my info (computer included) are things I am not taking with me to the Other Shore. Karonte (the boatman) won't let any lugage into his canoe...only people (& family mascots that can swimm behind)

So it's like all info in my PC is for the rest of my family, only. Good that you are back "on-line"!

See you later, Alligater...after a while, Crocodile.

happened to me many times kim.

my final solution was to buy a 500 gigabite external drive. every now and then i save whole folders over there so i can just restore the os and start again fresh.

it's funny though... it's almost a year and i haven't crashed. but i do have all the protections and clean-up programs.... that may be why. have a crash free new year.

Encee 8. January 2009, 22:09

It happened to me too, Kim. It happened only a few weeks ago, while I was busily transferring the most worthy stuff from my old 'puter's hard drive to my new one which uses Vista.
My old one used Win XP and my laptop uses Win XP, so transferring was smooth, whereas my real back-up desktop uses Win 98. I was trying to move from XP to both the Win Vista one and the Win 98 one. CRASH! Lost everything that was being transferred. I'm still trying to re-create the Win XP stuff and to put it on both the laptop and the Win 98 desktop as double back-up.
Mirror it! If it worked, OK. But......?
I really empathize with you!
Can I be of any help?

External backup is the way to go kim, they are really cheap these days ....and convert to Linux.
I've never had a crash with linux and for $10 you can get an OS that's light and trouble free. Trash the Windows and don't look back.

Encee 10. January 2009, 16:42

Kim, I agree with Phantom2
I like Ubuntu for its looks and ease and price: zero, NADA!
I have used it for a long time, but can't break away from Win XP totally and get screwed just about quarterly.
Back-up on external hard drive or cheaper thumb drives!
I'm learning not to trust anything anymore.

Sorry about your crash Kim. Let me know if there is anything I can do to help you.

CAN SOMEONE HELP ME WITH A "NEW" COMPUTER?????

I also lost an external h/d as well. that crashed on me in November.

I lost EVERYTHING that i had backed up onto it

Deke 18. January 2009, 23:23

Welcome to my world!

I now hae everything backed up onto a 2nd drive inside my computer, and that occasionally gets backed up onto an external drive. I do it by hand, I don't trust the auto-backup programs not to screw up and not tell me about it...

I'd echo the Linux sentiments. Mandriva, PCLinuxOS, and Debian are all pretty good in their own way. Ubuntu's OK, but I like the Linux Format Magazine Ubuntu because it has a choice of desktops. Your best bet would be to go to distrowatch.com and choose the features that appeal to you. You get a choice of paid-for and free distributions so you can decide if the extra services are worth paying for, and if you want you get to choose the nationality of the versions you choose from! PCLinuxOS is programmed in Canada, so if you feel the need to shout at a programmer you get one who can understand you... :D

do you still have your old computer? My pc gave up on me months ago. I could have screamed! All the precious data on it and no back ups on it what so ever!
But, we gave it to our friend who is pretty much a pc expert, and he fiddled with the computer left right and center. At first, he got back stuff that we had back ups for on our other computers, which was like totally unnecessary. As we gave him the computer, and it was a reasonably expensive one at the time, he really got right down into it and managed to retrieve all my lost data. I have it all and I am so relieved. We all work on I-mac's now. Pc's are always giving problems, and macs are so easy to work with, once you get used to the different way it works, much simpler and they have the added benefit that they are rarely attacked by viruses and stuff. I have virus check ups on a weekly basis and so far, zilch! On the pc, I always had viruses, nothing major, bugs, worms and spy ware always attaching itself to my hard drives... drove me nuts! I  my mac. Never will I go to a pc again!

i have a newer post than this. i got me a Linux computer. the os on it is Ubuntu, but P2 (phantom) is sending me his disc that has Mint on it, and we r going to change me from Ubuntu to Mint (a kind of os that can be put over the Ubuntu and is a Linux program). i still have ALL my computers (3 now). i won't get rid of any of them...lol.

Suntana 5. February 2009, 21:20

You didn't have your Files, Docs & Pics on CDs, Squeaky? That's how I back my stuff up. After 2 startovers from scratch, I learned my lesson. Actually on those occasions, I did have my stuff backed up on a CD. But, on both of those occasions, a CD Fugg Up was involved and my ONE Backup CD was FUBARed on both occasions. After that, I made it a point to have my stuff backed up on more than 1 CD.

Kimberly 6. February 2009, 03:08

my writer drive decided it was going to die, a week b4 my external drive died, and so, i couldn't back ne thing up

Suntana 6. February 2009, 03:45

Ouch! That was similar to what happened to me in one of the aforementioned occasions. My CD Burner was already kaput and then my computer got a virus that made me end up having to do a Windows Reinstall. A lot of stuff that I hadn't yet burned ... was lost. :bomb:

Kimberly 6. February 2009, 03:58

thats exactly the reason for this post...i lost everything...including pics that i can't replace
