according to my memory of grade school, the great wall of china was always one of the great wonders of the world.

scott cumming 8. July 2007, 01:24

anyway, who decides these things these days. i would never choose the inca citadel as a 'wonder'
i don't want to offend anyone... but it's not even inca. it's catholic. of course, i am only going by the link you posted. and the picture, though very small is definitely a catholic church of no great significance that i can see.

Kimberly 8. July 2007, 01:37

this time, it was the world people that voted...not just certain places or people...everyone that could either text message their vote or vote online, got to vote for them.

scott cumming 8. July 2007, 01:47

ahhh, thanks for the explanation. i missed that. i didn't get to vote. i would have nominated the space station.

Kimberly 8. July 2007, 02:22

张弛 Sir AzureTimm, Kingdom of Love 8. July 2007, 02:24

Haha Kim! That's it! Yeah!
And the space station? It IS a wonder. But because of some unknown reason, it wasn't included in the list...
Regards, a boy misses Kim terribly, timm.

Kimberly 8. July 2007, 02:29

well, at least you got my message about The Great Wall...and thats what really mattered

Huolong 8. July 2007, 03:51

as a matter of fact, there is another very likely candidate in china for the new 7 wonders: terra-cotta warriors!

http://images.google.com/images?hl=en&q=terra-cotta+warriors&gbv=2

Huolong 8. July 2007, 03:55

"The Terracotta Army was buried with the first Emperor of Qin (Qin Shi Huangdi) in 210-209 BC (his reign over Qin was from 247 BC to 221 BC and over unified China from 221 BC to his death). Their purpose was to help rule another empire with Shi Huangdi in the afterlife. Consequently, they are also sometimes referred to as "Qin's Armies"."

scott cumming 8. July 2007, 03:56

truly. if i might comment again huolong626 is right about that. it is an amazing work of magnificent proportion.

Huolong 8. July 2007, 04:11

in fact, the terms lots of countries around the world use to call my country (in Chinese: Zhong Guo) is derived from the name of the Qin dynasty.

Let's consider the following:

qin (Ch'in) - china - chine - cina -

张弛 Sir AzureTimm, Kingdom of Love 8. July 2007, 04:37

From wikipedia, right? i agree.

Esther-Sugar Winx 8. July 2007, 05:35

..... Giza is out...?

Weird.

Kimberly 8. July 2007, 05:46

nooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo

the Great Pyramids of Giza were left with their being one of the great wonders of the world...if u read the article, it states that they were taken out of the voting, but were kept as one of the great wonders of the world...as it is the only standing/viewable wonder still left from the original 7....

read the article again...sugar

Esther-Sugar Winx 8. July 2007, 06:51

I don't like that article... The writer wrote it all jumbled and sounded very new-sy... They'd lose me that way... You write better!

Anyway, I will Google for it. I bet there are simpler articles written about it. But thanx for the world news update Kim!!

Jim 8. July 2007, 10:53

China! Coming on strong! :knight:

As I have been brousing through the Classical Music Pages in YouTube (surprise, surprise), it's amazing how many musicians, ballet dancers, and even opera singers are now oriental, most from either China or Japan.

I saw one scene from Swan Lake performed by The National Ballet of China. Of course, that could be Taiwan. If it were on the mianland, it would likely be called, "The People's Revolutionary Ballet!"

Re: Space Station. Couldn't really qualify. To be a real wonder, something has to pass the test of time. And the Space Station, like it or not, is a temporary, if marvellous device. Just like its predecessor, the Mir, at one point it will be worn out, and have to be knocked out of orbit and burn up in the atmosphere. Sad, but true.

Taj!

Thanks so much, Squeaks! I wasn't aware of this whole thing! :D

scott cumming 8. July 2007, 11:06

bull shit. no respect for the future. no understanding of the work so many striving people have devoted their lives to. so frivolous to...

in such a cavalier fashion to dismiss the greatness of mankind.

do you think getting off of the earth is so meaningless?
get with it.

i am sorry, kim,to spoil your journal with this reaction of mine. but that kind of thoughtless verbosity has to be answered immediately.

David 8. July 2007, 13:18

I think they should have included the lonely lander sitting at the site of the Apollo 11 Moon landing. That was the greatest achievement of Mankind to date. Or, the converse, the Trinity site in New Mexico where the 1st Atom Bomb was detonated......Both profoundly changed the course of Human history forever.

Huolong 8. July 2007, 14:09

eyes seem to be only on buildings on Earth.

maybe the seven wonders of the world means the seven wonders on Earth, not the moon or in the orbit.

:D

Jon 8. July 2007, 15:29

Thanks Kim
I am going to do a page about this starting tonight. Probably finish tomorrow, since it is late here.

;-D

PS. huolong626, the wonders are 'Man Made' wonders, so the Moon is not eligible!

张弛 Sir AzureTimm, Kingdom of Love 8. July 2007, 15:50

Don't put a pair of red glasses to view China. It isn't called that. And as far As I know, Chinese national ballet wasn't named as such.

Kimberly 8. July 2007, 20:57

Houlong-

had these been included with the voting, and we were allowed to vote for them, i surely would have included them with my 7 votes. they are truely a work of art, even with them still being in the restoration state.

Scott-

your input too is greatly appreciated, and i hope i don't offend too many of my fellow americans, but, i did not and would not vote for the Statue Of Liberty, as the meaning of it no longer exists.

Rad-

i too have noticed that a lot of the newer musicians, dancers, opera singers, etc are oriental. as for the name u stated, i do believe that there is such a ballet group. as for the space station, i think they need to really work on getting one that is "made" for the future. the ones we have right now are too vulnerable to mishaps. i too thought that the Taj was a good decision (also voted for that one as well). and yw for the info.

Scott-

getting off the earth is not meaningless, but i think rad was thinking the same way i was about the space station. it is a marvelous wonder, but there is too much that goes wrong with it all the time and they are constantly going up and fixing it, and some ppl have even died trying to get off the ground to go and do such things.

Ravo-

yes, i agree with that, but, they didn't put them two in there, and i am sure that had they done so, people would have voted on them.

Houlong-

i agree, i do believe that they mean "on the earth" not out in space, but i still agree that for future ideas they should start including such things as the Apollo 11 Landing on the moon, the first A-Bomb explosion, the space station, etc. maybe some day they will, but probably NOT in our lifetime.

Chinajon-

thanks for making a page about it. i don't know that much about putting pages together here on opera, but i will surely be adding a page for it on my own web site.

Timm-

i am glad that you have joined in as well. as for taking rads comment to mean "red china", i don't think he meant it that way. if you can help us out with the name of the national ballet it would b appreciated, so we don't call it something that it is not.

TO ALL-

thank you for stopping by, and commenting, but please don't start arguments. this was put here to HONOR the countries that won, NOT to scrutinize them for winning, or to scrutinize those items that wer "not" in the voting at all.

scott cumming 8. July 2007, 22:10

i wasn't referring to the shuttle. it does seem to be under a new authority which is napping.

i was referring to the permanent fixture in orbit which was so expensive that it took two great nations to create and maintain. it is a modern pyramid; an enormous achievement.

Kimberly 8. July 2007, 23:07

oh ok...i don't know that one then

Red 9. July 2007, 01:03

Wow. That's pretty cool.

Kimberly 9. July 2007, 02:04

ty & yw

Red 9. July 2007, 05:07

Uhm... Sorry- What does that mean?

Huolong 9. July 2007, 05:34

@ chinajon

sorry, what i meant was not "on" the moon or in the orbit or out of our solar system (if my memory serves me right, dozens of years ago, the U.S. sent some space probes intended to fly out of the solar system in the hope that some life forms on other planets might come across them and then understand the probes were something crafted by people on earth.)

to all:

as i see it, the event organizers wanted the world to vote the its greatest historical buildings (actually on earth), where ordinary people can go and admire. if all "man-made" wonders were included in the voting, the list would be too long: antibiotics, genetic engineering, Internet, computer, nuclear power, spaceships, automobiles, ......

Kimberly 9. July 2007, 06:47

Shigen--

ty means thank you
yw means your welcome

and never be sorry to ask. its ok to ask

Huolong--

i agree

7 new wonders have been announced on Saturday, 7/7/2007
What a great day...with five "seven"

Cornelis Droog 10. July 2007, 10:02

Christ my Redeemer

About 100 million people over the whole world have chosen the 7 new wonders of the world. … Christ the Redeemer in Rio de Janeiro …

Since Jesus Christ is Eternal God, it is blasphemy to make any kind of an “image” of Christ in ANY form. These are the words of God to the whole human race:
Exodus 20:4-5 “Thou shalt not make unto thee any graven image, or any likeness of any thing that is in heaven above, or that is in the earth beneath, or that is in the water under the earth: Thou shalt not bow down thyself to them, nor serve them: for I the LORD [JEHOVAH] thy God am a jealous God, visiting the iniquity of the fathers upon the children unto the third and fourth generation of them that hate me;” (This is repeated in Deuteronomy 5:8-9)

Romans 1:22-25 “Professing themselves to be wise, they became fools, And changed the glory of the uncorruptible God into an image made like to corruptible man, and to birds, and fourfooted beasts, and creeping things. Wherefore God also gave them up to uncleanness through the lusts of their own hearts, to dishonour their own bodies between themselves: Who changed the truth of God into a lie, and worshipped and served the creature more than the Creator, who is blessed for ever. Amen.”

Kimberly 10. July 2007, 10:45

IF THAT IS THE CASE, THEN Y DON'T U GO PREACHING TO ALL THE CHURCHES ALL OVER THE WORLD THAT HAVE A FIGURINE OF CHRIST IN, AROUND, OR NEAR THE CHURCH ITSELF

U WANNA PREACH THE BIBLE...DO IT TO SOMEONE THAT WILL LISTEN...

PPL COME TO MY HOME AND TRY THAT SHIT...I SLAM THE DOOR IN THEIR FACES...I HAVE MY BIBLE...AND AS LONG AS PPL KEEP TELLING ME THAT IM NOT WANTED IN "THEIR" CHURCH BECAUSE I DON'T HAVE "MONEY", THEN THEY CAN KEEP THEIR FUCKING PREACHING OUT OF MY FACE AS WELL.

Aprilsnow 四月雪 12. July 2007, 04:18

Cheers and congratulations to you too, SqueakeyCat, I know there is a vote from you! The Great Wall belongs not only to China but to the people of the world, it's a world heritage. Thank you for the post.

Jim 3. August 2007, 20:18

On YouTube there is a clip from Swan Lake and it's credited to "The National Ballet of China." But there was no hint as to whether it's the Mainland or Taiwan.

Perhaps this "Seven Wonders of the World" thing needs re-definition. How can you really compare the Taj Mahal with the Space Staion? It's like apples and oranges. Maybe we need categories, as in Architecture, Technology, Art, Music, etc.

But, as usual, that's just thoughtless verbosity.

Definition of "thoughtless verbosity".

"Disgreeing with I-Artman".

scott cumming 3. August 2007, 21:19

*tickled to be disagreed with.

Jim 3. August 2007, 21:58

Well, of course! Isn't that what "Democracy" is all about? The right to disgree with the idle remarks of the unknowing? (As in Politicians and I_Artmen?)

scott cumming 3. August 2007, 22:37

since i already know whatever it is that i think i know, i welcome any argument. that is, because i know that out of every argument, comes new material to question. and in questioning and re-questioning my own self, with a descriminating function of the mind, which the chinese have called a monkey mind, but it's not, slowly but surely i will separate the dross from the metal.

worn out words? twisted meanings... like alice... "when i use a word it means what i mean it to mean." like democracy? no, go to the source. the still 'world shaking' reasoning of socrates.
a democracy... the ancient definition is now number five in the american heritage dictionery. to whit...

5. The principles of social equality and respect for the individual within a community.

"disgree with the idle remarks of the unknowing?" !

so, in conclusion i 'disgree', disagree, with the opinion that my remarks were in any way 'idle'. and i protest vehemently, that i could be characterized as 'unknowing'. a lifetime of experience and study makes me more than "faust", akin to "siddhartha" and identical to "milarepa" not to neglect mentioning that i have been a natural 'sanyasin' since childhood.

my ego is just as healthy as any other being's 'atman'.
consequently, my hackles rise when any upstart discards my opinion with such ease of conscience.
I_ArtMan

Kimberly 3. August 2007, 23:58

ok u 2

this was NOT posted to argue over.

it was posted as my way of agreeing with the choices for the 7 New Wonders.

i put it here for everyone to comment on...NOT to argue about.

i don't care who thinks what about someone else's life, that is NOT the subject of this post. the subject of this post was the 7 New Wonders of the world.

QUIT ARGUING ABOUT WHAT SHOULD HAVE BEEN PICKED AND WHAT WASN'T PICKED AND WHAT SHOULD HAVE BEEN INCLUDED IN THE PICKING OF THOSE SEVEN.

scott cumming 4. August 2007, 00:52

o.k.

Kimberly 4. August 2007, 02:19

sry to sound so damn blunt, but it needed to be said

scott cumming 4. August 2007, 02:23

*chagrined and feeling right-sized once again.

Kimberly 4. August 2007, 02:27

was not yelling at u 2 persay, but, with everything that is going on in this world, the one thing we don't need is ppl arguing over stupid petty shit...there is enough of it going on as is, and it needs to stop....not just here on the internet, but even in real life as well as here.

so SMILE
