Joliet couple want their Christmas painting back

January 11, 2010
By TONY GRAF tgraf@scn1.com

JOLIET -- For seven Christmas seasons, John and Alice Harrell have displayed a large painting depicting the history of Jesus Christ.

The painting -- 18 feet long and 34 inches high -- has been on the front deck of their home at 2205 Marmion Ave. in the Marycrest subdivision. The painting's four panels have shown Christ's nativity, crucifixion, resurrection and second coming.

John Harrell and his wife, Alice, look at the empty place where one of the panels of his Christmas mural was. The section was stolen sometime last Monday night or Tuesday morning. john patsch/staff photographer From:
http://www.suburbanchicagonews.com/heraldnews/news/1983932,JO11_STOLEN_P1.fullimage

Until this year, there has never been an incident or problem with the painting. But early last week, someone stole the first panel, which shows the star over Bethlehem, John said Saturday.

The theft took place between 9:30 p.m. Jan. 4 and 4:30 a.m. Jan. 5, John said. Tracks on the front-yard snow indicated that one or two people were involved, he added.

John is asking for the return of the panel.

"We wouldn't hold anything against anybody if they brought it back," he said.
Meaning of painting

The Harrells display the painting every year to emphasize that the meaning of Christmas is Christ.

"We believe that Christmas is the celebration of the birth of Christ," John said in a Saturday interview. "A lot of people have done other things -- Santa Claus and all kinds of things -- but the reason for the season is Jesus."

John also wants to emphasize that one cannot have history without Christ.

"The press keeps trying to separate us from God under the guise of separation of church and state. I contend that if you are honest, you cannot separate God from the founding of the United States any more than you can take him out of history," John said in a written statement.

In the first few years of the display, the Harrells also showed the painting at Easter, which celebrates the Resurrection.

"This is what we believe history is all about," he said.

John does not like the trend of no longer using the historical terms "BC" and "AD," which stand for "Before Christ" and "Anno Domini," or "In the Year of Our Lord."

Today, writers often use the terms "BCE" or "CE," which stand for "Before the Common Era" and "Common Era."

"It's political correctness," John said. "It's like saying 'Happy Holidays' instead of 'Merry Christmas.'"

The painting is the work of Dan Allen, who in 2003 was a graphic design major at Pensacola Christian College in Florida.

Alice said the painting is a unique way of displaying the meaning of Christmas.

"The years we've had it up, we've just had so many comments from neighbors and people who drive past here -- how much they like it," she said. Seeking return

Alice said there would be "no hard feelings" if someone were to return the painting.

John said: "They could bring it to the front door, and knock on the door, and I'd shake their hands and say, 'Thank you.' If they were afraid that we might do something, they could bring it back in the middle of the night and lean it up against the railing."

"If whoever did it was man enough, as we say, to bring it back, I would respect that, and thank them for it. No prosecution."

I think I read that Bibles are very commonly stolen from motels.

Hey, I see you fixed the Sidebar text issue, Kim. up

wow! what a story! thanks for sharing! smile

Jaxs Powelleagle4eyes Tuesday, January 12, 2010 3:37:23 AM

Chuck, the Bibles that are put in the motel rooms are there for people to take. lol

Lovinmalamuteslovinmalamutes Tuesday, January 12, 2010 5:20:37 AM

How sad people stealing the very thing that should have made them think about it and NOT do it.p lol lol

MosesMosesTheDog Tuesday, January 12, 2010 3:37:54 PM

Some people need to be shot.

Suntana Tuesday, January 12, 2010 10:12:35 PM

Nnnnggg, I don't know about that, Jaxs. Somehow I don't buy that. Unless some corporation or some filthy rich philanthropist is donating the Bibles for ALL motels and hotels to replace them, it doesn't make business sense. I suppose TOWELS are there for people to take? whistle If they could afford that, they could afford to provide bigger bars of soap. bigsmile

Lovinmalamuteslovinmalamutes Tuesday, January 12, 2010 11:59:27 PM

Yeah, instead of that little tiny bar you can barely see. and struggle to hold onto while in the shower. up p

I would have taken the Bible if it had been up to me. Stealing the Bible. Doesn't quite seem right to me for some reason. up bigsmile

Suntana Wednesday, January 13, 2010 4:08:13 AM

Uhhh, Lucy, did you perhaps mean to say that you "Wouldn't" have taken the Bible? Or what am I missing here?

Jaxs Powelleagle4eyes Wednesday, January 13, 2010 6:07:41 AM

Many local churches spend money on bibles to put in hotels. The Latter Day Saints is a big contributor but the biggest contributor are the Gideons. They hope that you do take the bible with you as part of their missions program in spreading the gospel.

MosesMosesTheDog Wednesday, January 13, 2010 1:40:10 PM

yuck religion

Lovinmalamuteslovinmalamutes Wednesday, January 13, 2010 1:53:18 PM

I meant I WOULDN'T take the Bible, as stealing it didn't seem to be the right thing to do. I mean IT's the BIBLE for crying out loud. You don't STEAL it!!!yikes lol

MosesMosesTheDog Wednesday, January 13, 2010 1:57:24 PM

The Gideons place the Bibles in motels & hotels for the sole purpose of patrons taking them home with them. They hope that the people will get "religion" of some sort.

Lovinmalamuteslovinmalamutes Thursday, January 14, 2010 9:16:31 PM

I have yet to get religion and I'm sure I won't!! I believe Christ is our savior, but I don't believe I need to pick a side to worship him.bigsmile

MosesMosesTheDog Saturday, January 16, 2010 9:37:40 PM

Mom is the same way, Lucy. She believes in Jesus, but won't go to church or do anything associated with them. She has her own way of Religion.

Lovinmalamuteslovinmalamutes Sunday, January 17, 2010 8:19:13 AM

From everything I've heard of your mom Jax I think her and I would get along quite well together. smile

Too many people want to choose sides (denominations) and then proceed to tear down all others. That isn't the way it is suppose to be (not in my believe anyway) so I chose not to participate. rolleyes

So how are ya doing? Did you read Peppermints post about "Molly" ? If not you should. I know you'll like it.up bigsmile

Jaxs Powelleagle4eyes Monday, January 18, 2010 12:58:21 AM

No I have not read Molly but I will.
People can have their religion. I don't need a building to go to that is labled a church. Church is not a building and never has been.

Lovinmalamuteslovinmalamutes Monday, January 18, 2010 6:24:39 AM

That's right. The best way to be close to God is out in His creation!!!
Love the Picture!!!up bigsmile

KimberlySqueakeyCat Monday, January 18, 2010 6:23:18 PM

In the beginning there were no buildings to worship in. When Jesus went to church, it was of his own makings, out in fields and aboard ships. If we were meant to worship in BUILDINGS, then Jesus would have gone into them as well. He only went into a couple, but did not worship in them. He criticized them for what they were doing.

The "church" was never set up to say "if you can't give us money, we don't want you here". It was set up so that people could go and have a place indoors out of the weather to worship.

If we were meant to "give" to churches, Jesus would not have said "give of thyself, that which you can". He did not say "give everything you own to people that will use it for their own personal need".

I am not a God-fearing person, like a lot of people are. I believe in what I believe in, and thats all that matters to me. If I were meant to have any more "belief" than what I do, then I would have been notified by GOD a long time ago, and I would not have been notified by some blasphemous church that only wants what they can get from people.

Church was NOT made for the Pastors/Priests/etc. to tell their congregation that if you can't give, then you can't join us. They were not made for them to tell us that if we don't believe what they preach, then get out and don't come back.

Jesus never told anyone they couldn't be there with him, or that they couldn't worship the way they desired. He told them "worship in silence, darkness, or alone, but never think that you are alone, for God is always with you, no matter where you worship or how you worship" (I know that's not the exact quote, but it is how I know to put it so people will understand it).

I can go on and on and on, but for rooms sake, I will quit.

Also, as you can see, Religion is one subject that pizzes me off to no end, especially since I was told in the church that I grew up in (after our longtime pastor retired), that if I couldn't give what the church expected of me, not to come back.

THATS BULLSHIT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

We should all give each other the freedom to worship as we will. Not as one man thinks another should!!!

I believe a relationship with God and Christ is deeply personally and different for everyone!!! love

KimberlySqueakeyCat Tuesday, January 19, 2010 8:51:18 AM

I am glad that people agree with me...the last time I had a post that brought up religion, I lost a lot of my friends due to my comments.

Lovinmalamuteslovinmalamutes Tuesday, January 19, 2010 12:36:21 PM

Those weren't friends!sad

If man could learn that not everyone will think or believe the same but it is okay, then we'd be on the way to more of what God wanted to begin with. Just my opinion!cool

MosesMosesTheDog Saturday, January 30, 2010 12:27:41 AM

Jaxs Powelleagle4eyes Tuesday, February 9, 2010 2:18:43 PM

It was funny. It scared the heck out of her and she cackled frantically. Good thing I was home at the time bigsmile

I had to pick her up and hold her to calm her down and then she was ok. I have video of Kim holding Tweety. I remebered to take pictures and video yes

Lovinmalamuteslovinmalamutes Thursday, February 11, 2010 12:00:02 PM

Aww Poor Tweety, she didn't have her mommy hen to tell her all about becoming a hen herself. p lol

Have you posted the photos yet? I looked but didn't see them.

Jaxs Powelleagle4eyes Thursday, February 11, 2010 1:34:40 PM

Kim posted them last night. Now I get to be head Roo and keep running two roosters out of the yard. Like I don't have enough to do lol

Lovinmalamuteslovinmalamutes Thursday, February 11, 2010 3:58:13 PM

lol I'm sure you don't scare them.lol You do realize they will find a way to woo Tweety even though you don't want them too. The only question is which rooster will win.p

Jaxs Powelleagle4eyes Thursday, February 11, 2010 5:30:20 PM

Me! Almost caught one of them this morning. His horniness will be his demise devil

Jaxs Powelleagle4eyes Thursday, February 11, 2010 5:32:29 PM

Tweety is a tiny little hen and these big roosters with their spurs can harm Tweety or even kill her by trying to mate her. Can't have that.

Also these two roosters are mean and are problem so they have to go.

Lovinmalamuteslovinmalamutes Thursday, February 11, 2010 5:34:36 PM

Sounds like he will end up in the stew pot if he keeps this up.whistle devil Once you stop those two Roosters you do realize you'll be the "Cock of the walk"?!!!p

Jaxs Powelleagle4eyes Thursday, February 11, 2010 7:50:29 PM

Then things will be back to normal bigsmile

I have a friend that is going to help out. He is going to wear camo and sit quietly in the tree they roost in. We should have them caught by tonight.
Stew for tomorrow chef

KimberlySqueakeyCat Thursday, February 11, 2010 9:36:45 PM

maybe they won't wake us up at 3am anymore...that would be a relief. maybe then, i can get some sleep, instead of sleeping all day long

Lovinmalamuteslovinmalamutes Friday, February 12, 2010 9:32:19 AM

UH OH Rooster stew and no wake up call.p lol
I wish you luck in catching them. Are they wild or do they live on the farm down the road???

Jaxs Powelleagle4eyes Friday, February 12, 2010 1:24:17 PM

They are wild. There are no farms nearby.

Lovinmalamuteslovinmalamutes Monday, February 15, 2010 9:04:09 AM

Well I wish you luck in whatever you end up doing. If they hit the stew pot I hope they will be tender.bigsmile up

Jaxs Powelleagle4eyes Monday, February 15, 2010 7:02:25 PM

2 roosters are officially history bigsmile party

They did nothing but fight and were very aggressive. that makes them dangerous cause they can attack the other animals and even people. That I can could not have around here.

KimberlySqueakeyCat Monday, February 15, 2010 7:07:33 PM

Louise does enough hole drilling on her own...don't need cocks doing it too

Lovinmalamuteslovinmalamutes Wednesday, February 17, 2010 11:25:39 PM

I hear ya. Holes being drilled by a birds beak is not fun. Plus, they could have caused even more problems with your hens.up bigsmile

So now that the roosters are gone, is it better around there for the girls?

Take care, and if you have a stew pot going who can blame you!?!
I certainly can't!!! up bigsmile

Jaxs Powelleagle4eyes Thursday, February 18, 2010 8:49:46 AM

It is much quieter all night. No Roosters crowing all night long, it is much better for the hens. They are not being run down several times a day. That was not good for Louise, she is an old girl: Not good for tweety she is a tiny young hen. Those roosters could have killed her trying to mate her. They did try killing her a couple of times but I caught them.
